Hi, im having our wedding in five weeks and we havent booked a DJ yet. we are thinking of having my friend's boyfriend as our DJ but he hasnt confirmed and we are waiting for 6 weeks already. is there anyone you could recommend to play here in Chigwell, Essex? How much does a DJ usually cost? also, there will be breaks for Kareoke singing as we have our own personal kareoke module. May i ask your opinion on how it works with dj and kareoke playing alternately with each other. is it good or will it cut the excitement between the dancing and/or singing? thanks.

Having waited 6 weeks already for a confirmation, I would give up and start looking elsewhere personally.
DJ's vary in price from £100 - £1000+ depending on what level of service you're looking for. Any decent professional DJ will charge around £300+ on average and will be fully insured and have PAT tested equipment.
I have DJ'd at events previously where Karaoke was required and have done it the way you suggested - i.e. varying between Disco and Karaoke, however it does tend to be a bit of an atmosphere killer. I find it works better to have a chunk of Karaoke either early on before the disco kicks off properly or later on, when everyone has had some drink (or confidence juice as it should be known lol!) - that way a few more might be inclined to have a go instead of one or two.
Just be aware Karaoke is not everyone's cup of tea, so if your guests aren't keen i'd maybe offer it early on in the night to get it out of the way. - They know they'll be able to dance the night away to the disco then, without it being interrupted.

DJs are on average around £300/400 I would not pay more than £500 , and as above said a lot of people do not like karaoke, due to not wanting to take part due to embarrassment aswell as peoples singing ability giving people a headache .
