Just looking for a bit of advise, just spoken to my sis about videography as she is getting married 16 months before me I was interested to know if she had booked anyone. She feels the same as me that it's a bit of a waste of money as everyone has smart phones and will be taking photo's all day so very little will be missed. However I love the idea of having the day captioned on film for my little girl to watch as she gets older (she will only be 5 at the time so a lot of the day may be lost on her). So my sister has suggested we just buy a decent video camera and film each others weddings. I was thinking in addition to this I would encourage my guests to record through the day and ask them to send me their videos so with the help of "film making" software my laptop and a friend with a little know how I could put together my own wedding video. Is this something others have tried? Was it really complicated to do or fairly straight forward? And did you get the results you wanted (just a bit concerned as there won't be a practice run or a take 2)? TIA for any input and advice x

I have seen this done before with Go-Pro cameras. The bride and groom had this passed around guests throughout the day/meal/evening and one of their friends on a film course put together a really cool film montage with music over most of it where it was just people filming dancing/games/walking down the aisle/walking back up/photos being taken etc and would allow audio for people leaving messages, a few edits of the speeches and vows exchanged during the ceremony.
For me personally I felt the same initially with my OH that we didnt want one. But then I saw a cinematic taster video done by a couple who just started branching into wedding videography after working for a film industry and realised I wanted that. I wanted to look back at even just a 5min montage of our wedding (of course they do a much longer length as well but the smaller video is for social media sharing) for years to come and with my future children so they can see what happened on the day. My OH is still iffy with it but understands.

I'm glad other people have tried this I did wonder if it was a stupid idea as I've never known anyone do their own filming at their wedding so I thought there must be a reason as to why no which I wasn't getting. Saying that my mum and dad had there wedding filmed professionally but because of where the camera man was stood it looks like my mum is marrying a church pillar.... apparently my dad is behind it.... somewhere lol. I would like the ceremony and speeches to be filmed, these are the bit my sis and I plan to record at the respective weddings and then I would like to make a montage of other peoples recordings through the day. I just think with all the software available these days it makes sense to save money in this area by DIY'ing it?! I will look into investing in a G0 pr0 camera (I know my bro wants one to film when he goes drifting/surfing/all the other stupid stuff he does) but just looked on there website and downloaded their software to try it out. Thank you!

I undersand your meaning. We thought about DIY'ing it too for a short while but tbh tI would be worrying someone would make off with the tech lol. We even considered DIY'ng our photo booth with a fujifilm instant camera but we wanted to added ability to upload to social media and for guests to take something away with them.
Good luck with the camera work though. I bet it comes out amazing!

We had my uncle and cousin videoing our day which my dad edited and put together onto a dvd for us.
We tried asking all guests to send us their video clips if they take any of the day (we emailed everyone a couple of weeks before the big day), but didn't get a single clip sent to us.

Had our dream perfect honeymoon in Hawaii!
We have a friend and my bro in law videoing the speeches etc and then our friend is going to go round the tables and see if anybody wants to leave us a video message and we'll do a video 'mash up' afterwards. I wanted a videographer but H2B didn't as they were quite expensive, but this way all the important bits are captured and we can edit it ourselves.
My Stepdad uses the G0-Pr0 cameras for his job and he says they're definitely worth the money.

Our photographers daughter does the videoing whilst they do the photography. It's an additional £276 but tbh, I think I will miss so much as its all gonna be blurry, I'm more than happy to pay it x

I personally don't think its a waste of money, I have booked a videographer, I just see it as its one day you can never relive and if something went wrong and I didn't have my video I would be really disappointed. I know that people have budgets and want to save where they can but I personally wouldn't scrimp on that as its memories you cant get back, might be worth while contacting colleges etc always students will to do this sort of work for free or very little and great experience for them xx

I think if I had a grand to spare I would hire a videographer , but I don't and im not that bothered about having a full length professional movie with everything included e.t.c and don't really fancy yet another person following us around filming and it being someone I don't know I don't think I would feel as relaxed... I just want a few snippets throughout the day, everyone arriving, the ceremony, games, bit of dancing .e.t.c . so my friend is just going to film for me with camcorder, and go around every now and then and ask guests if they want to say something. So I will have something to watch and he will edit it for me to . If you want something really professional then its worth hiring one, they can do some fab films otherwise id go for it an DIY....

I ve got a student doing mine, they have the thirst for it and want to try hard for a fraction of the cost, maybe try contacting your local uni and see if anyone is interested?

I saw a company at a wedding fair that hire out the video cameras for guests to hand round and diy the video and then you send back all the videos and they do the editing for you. I can't remember what the company was called but I think it was maybe £500 for the hire and all the editing and the dvd sent back to you. X
