I was just wondering if anybody is doing or has done their own flowers and how easy it is??

I'm wanting quite a simple hand tied bouquet of roses, maybe with a few other flowers in there too. I'd also quite like floral arrangements on our table for the meal (we're having an intimate wedding breakfast, like a big family meal).

I've been quoted around £100 for my bouquet and around £50 per bunch of flowers for table + £15 to hire a fish bowl. This just seems quite a lot for what is essentially £10-20 worth of flowers tied together and the flowers for the centre piece are just placed in the bowl so not much arranging required.

I'm in no way tight but I don't like being ripped off. I've watched some videos on youtube and it seems pretty easy to create the kind of thing I want. I'm fairly crafty and creative and it looks like something I could do. I was wondering if anybody has done it and whether it's as easy as it looks?

Hi Claire, I am having silk flowers as I am allergic, but didnt want to read and run! I am putting my flowers together myself, and it works out less expensive than buying ready made displays and bouquets. The Bouquets can be daunting to do, but if you are using real fresh flowers, it is sometimes less of a stress just having a florist do it for you and paying the money for it so that they appear on the day looking fresh and beautiful.

If you have mucked about with floral arrangements before, then buying the right foam (wet foam) to help keep your flowers looking alive for the big day, or using the aqua gels for the bouquets which can stand up in a vase, is really important. Flowers from a florist tend to be at their most freshest cut, some barely a day after being snipped, where as supermarkets are obviously occasionally a lot later (and dont last as long).

I would say, let the florist do it, and ask to see photos of their wedding arrangements. I am only doing it myself because there is no chance of them dying!! Good Luck, no matter what you decide!!

There's a flower wholesalers just down the road from me where I think I should be able to buy my flowers from. I've had a look on their website and you do need to register but it only asks for a company name, you don't need to provide VAT number or company address etc so I think I should be able to just make a company name up.
I might check it out and buy 2 dozen roses and some wire and have a go at it, it's not as though they'll go to waste cos I can just pop them in a vase in my lounge.

Susie but yes part of my concern is whether I need the stress, I mean the day before my wedding I'll probably have lots to do anyway without giving myself even more things to do.
I actually do a bit of cake decorating and would love to make my own wedding cake but there's just no way I'll have the time to do it, so maybe the flowers are the same

I know, I did mention the stress. We can do ours ourselves over winter being that they are silk, but yes, it is definitely something to be considering...do you need the extra stress?

I spent about £200 at Country b*A*sk*Ets and have made 4 bridesmaid bouquets, one toss bouquet, 14 button holes, 18 pew ends. I have loads spare too. and that included ribbon, embellishments, tools and fixings such as brooch pins and florist gum. I'm having a real flower bouquet for me but thats it. was easy.... i never had made them before... lots of videos on the internet and advice in the stores that supply them. I used polyfoam roses with a couple of silk peonies... look great, so I'm told by family and friends who are more than happy to wear/carry them and I think they look fab too... plus no stress about cost at last minute, weather affecting them etc... and also they're done ahead of time and they'll last longer on the day...
