    Hello all,

I had decided to get my bridesmaids infinity dresses and founf a nice lad on E*ST*Y who was selling them for £70, with £40 postage (total £250). Last night i stumbled on a how-to specifically for these dresses! I am off to get some jersey fabric this weekend and im going to give it a go!

Ill keep you informed but if you have a sewing machiene and are a bit handy i just thought id plant the seed! To buy the fabric would cost about £40 for all three, plus time. As they were previoulsy called the one seam dress, you guessed it, just one seam to make. They dont have hems so i dont need to worry about that.

I may be being optomistic but i may be saving myself hundreds!

What do you ladies think about DIY dresses? Would you??

We made all the dresses for my local carnival royalty which is jersey style! Just make sure you get a strech needle for the machine as some strech jersey will not catch a normal machine needle thread! Not very expencive!

My auntie has hand made five dresses, three adult, one child and one flower girl. I have a picture of a sample dress in my photo album, but the colour is Cadbury's purple rather than the red-purple in the photo. My auntie got married two years ago and made all her bridesmaids dresses, of which I was. I loved her dresses so I was dead excited when she offered to make mine!

This wedding has made me into a crafty person because I made all of my stationary and table decorations but sewing is a different league to me. I've never laid my hands on a sewing machine before!

I've made dresses for myself before which have been quite easy from a pattern.

I only had 3 little BM's so it was just as cheap to buy their dresses as it was to make them.

    I think it's a great idea!!
Think how proud you'll be of yourself when you see how good they look in them, knowing that you made them!!!

    :-)

that's a fab idea, I havn't used a sewing machine in years and would be worried i'd mess up, but may look into a short dress making class now xx

Well i found a nice sage green fabric and have ordered a few metres (total cost of £20 for a heavey fabric). Ill try it out this weekend, Its basically a round skirt (you choose the length) with a waist band and two very long strips of fabric which is the bit you tie up for the top. I will get a jersey needle fro the market tomorrow, thank you!

TBH i have no idea how much fabric each dress needs but i thought 4m should be enough?

    Im all excited now!

If you have the time and that is the dress a bride wants for her bridesmaids, it's ideal!

However, if the person making them doesn't have the skill levels, simple as it may be, it may not be worth the time!

Also, it might not be the actual dress a bride wants and they are seduced and enticed/persuaded by the low cost...

Personally, am not a fan as I like structured outfits and a lot of people have these dresses nowadays and i know most bridesmaids wont reuse them.

However, great info for those after these dresses on a strict budget! :)

We got our fabric from this site which was really wide , and we got 6 different colour fabric one for each girl = £90 which means each dress cost £12 and we had material left over for swags on the float!

My mum is currently making a mock up of a dress that we are considering as a bridesmaid dress. If the girls like it, we might very well go DIY on the dresses.

Ok so a quick update for everyone. I bought the fabric online but it was a very cheap jersey. I went ahead and made the trial one anyway and am really pleased with the results! Its nit perfect so want to change a few things. I have put pictures in my album for everyone to see but my phone is playing up so couldn't put them here.youll have to excuse my face, its been a long day lol! It looks like I will be abke to make all three dresses for about £70, so bargin I think!

It took about 3 hours, but I sewed it togther the wrong way so had to unpick it all and start again, id say an hour and a half each is reasonable. If anyone wants more details just ask!

A combination really, I googled diy infinity dress, on the first page are many blogs (including sew like my mom titled 'little red dress' which was the most useful. There are ones out there for maxi dress options where the skirt is constructed differently, its a good job a read them as I knew hiw to alter the dress when I realised I didnt have enough fabric! I am 5'11" and 5m woukd have been enough, I was just short with 4.

I also watched a few youtube videos to get a general idea of how to construct them. For instance many dont have a waistband, but I wanted a bit more security!

Well the bms all liked the dress but we all agreed we didnt like the colour or fabric, so the hunt is on for a slightly darker shade and a smoother jersey. Just waiting for fabric samples to come from the us now!! Very pleased with myself!
