Been to meet with my venue decorator tonight and we got talking as you do about other aspects of the wedding planning and she asked about my cake.
I told her who was making it and she went silent and the look on her face said it all.....
Earlier today I saw a post on the book of face from my cake lady and I noticed that the 'examples' she said she can make we're off someone else's website but she had left their water mark/brand on the post. I work in marketing and knew straight away that that was a bit odd. Anyway, tonight just totally confirmed my fears and so I'm not risking losing £240 for poor work/lack of communication and I have cancelled my order. Yes I have lost my £30 deposit (which I could do without right now) but I don't want to be disappointed on the day.
I am relieved I have found out now rather than later but I'm so disappointed as I thought I'd got things sorted......

Oh my God, what a cheek! How is she even allowed to do that?? You definitely made the right choice there, better to lose £30 now that be disappointed on the day. Have you got someone else in mind at least? I find going to shows was quite helpful because a lot had samples and display cakes, as well as portfolios of cakes they had genuinely made themselves xx

That's terrible that she gets away with it! I would of done exactly the same £30 is a small amount to loose to ensure you have the perfect cake and not paying some con woman, you should report her pics to book face xx

I thought it was really out of order..... I could quite easily say, hey I can do this and post someone's photo!!! I can barely boil an egg!!!
Don't get me wrong, we went for a tasting and it was amazing!! However, after seeing that today and then the bad reviews from Kelly and her brides, I just knew I had to cancel.
I have a ex colleague of mine who makes fantastic cakes and to be honest, yes it was £100 more but I know her work and sometimes it doesn't pay to cut corners. Wedding cakes are a focal point and I would like mine to be beautiful like any other bride/groom would.
Oh well, lesson learnt I guess

Can't believe the cheek of some people! Thank god you found out now and not on your wedding day. £30 is nothing compared to £240! If you know your friends work then I would go with her, I'm sure it will be worth the extra £100.

You've definitely done the right thing. And as the other ladies have said, losing £30 is nothing in comparison and it's just a relief that you found out before it was too late. Maybe you can try and haggle elsewhere and make the £30 back that way :-) x

I agree with everyone else - I'd rather loose £30 then pay out an extra £240 and not have what i ordered on the day! At least its now and not 1 month before the wedding! xx

Good you found out and could fix it. I went to a wedding a few years where the cake was starting to lean to one side after an hour, it did not look good!

I have seen another stunning cake which I now actually prefer lol. I may just take a break and concentrate on saving rather than spending..... It's played on my mind all day today and I got a little emotional earlier as I thought I'd really done well with the big stuff. Someone said it before on here, planning should be enjoyable and not causing stress. Especially as I don't have to rush. So I think this has just pushed me over the edge.... Not to worry xx

well done on following your gut on the cake. and as others have said £30 is nothing compared to a rubbish cake on the wedding day. its a shame there are people like that out there but least you know now and not in 16 months time :) we are paying quite abit for our cake but we know it is going to be just what we want :) x
CommentAuthorEmmilou82
MrsC2bee, I'm a strong believer in, if you want it and can afford it, have it lol..... So yeah, why not x

Me too emmilou82 :) plus I also think if something is ment to be then it will happen. When we booked the reception they did a package which included a 2tier cake and when we asked by who it was the lady we wanted the cake from anyway and we have had our cake tasting ( early I know haha) but thought we know what we want so just get it out the way. And have gone from a 2 tier to a 4 tier and our own design ( which lady excited about as hasn't done) and they do amazing doing new ideas. I'm so excited to see it on the day now. Just need to sort the cake toppers out now. Defo take a break if u need to, I took quite a few months break and only really got back into it when the venue sent me an invite to a wedding open day and sort of started from there lol. Sometimes I think u just got to enjoy normal life for abit as it does seem to get ontop of you abit. Maybe decide what you want and take a few months just seeing what comes up. And maybe ask the venue decorator who she recommends as she must see people work regularly x

Good advice MrsC2bee thank you...... It's hard to stop planning especially as H2B works away so evenings are fairly quiet but at least I can just look on the net and stuff lol. That's good about your package.... It all helps doesn't it

That's awful! Better to lose £30 than be disappointed on the day. Good luck with your search. You have plenty of time to find the perfect cake maker :)
CommentAuthorChrissyR85
I'm so sorry to hear about this and I am very glad you have been able to get another cake maker. As a bride to be and a part time cake maker myself I'm shocked that people do this as I have seen this happening quite a lot recently, but the cake maker community online is very good and quick at dealing with these people as they all have each others backs. You shouldn't need to use others peoples work if you are a good cake maker as your work will speak for itself. Personally I'm always up for doing new and exciting things with cake, but I will always be honest with the customer and tell them that I have not done it before - but I will show them examples where I have used the same/similar concepts or techniques. Anyway I hope the rest of your planning goes smoothly and you have a lovely memorable day. xxxx

Wow looks like you dodged a bullet there. I would have demanded my deposit back though, 30 quid or not. It all adds up when your planning a wedding. She shouldnt be allowed to keep anything, shes false advertising and passing off someone elses work for her own. So glad you didnt have to find this out on the day, it could have really been an upsetting shock. Good luck finding the perfect cake xx
