Over the last three years we've seen a big trend towards having diamonds in wedding rings- but does everyone think its a good idea? If not why not? We're also seeing many more blokes having rings too - but do they wear them once the honeymoon is over? A growing number of men have diamonds in their rings too - who's in favour of this? We'd love to hear your views on these subjects.

We are not having diamonds in our wedding rings, because our engagement rings are already very shiny!
The problem we are having is my partners ring is a cluster ring, an we cant find a wedding ring that will look good with it! xx
CommentAuthorJill
I do like diamond rings but think we'll be opting for something relatively plain - I think too much sparkle can look fake.
H2B will be wearing a ring, as do both of our dads... I think it's mad that some dont!
Finally, while looking on smooch (funnily enough) I'd pointed out some diamond set mens rings and H2B liked them but he doesnt generally wear jewellery so I think they may be a bit too 'bling' for him lol x
My h2b's wedding ring has a single princess cut diamond in it- platinum, he'll be wearing his all the time as I got him an engagement ring too n hes actually chose to wear it , the rings i;m attracted to are white gold and do have a band of diamonds through the middle but I haven't found one at the right price yet that also looks good against my engagement ring, hope this helps?

I would like some sparkle in my ring, but my mum said - what about if you get an eternity ring in the future - wont they look the same??
CommentAuthorMel D
We have white & yellow gold rings. After the weding when we have some spare money I'll be getting six little diamonds put in mine. H2b is going to have one ... but also likes the idea of us having matching rings, so might have six put in his too. He's said that he's going to wear it after the honeymoon ... well forever!
All my friends who have got married, the husbands all wear their rings daily.
I like the idea of being able to not wear my engagment ring (holidays etc) and still have a bit of bling if I'm just wearing my wedding ring.

Mine has a small line of diamonds in, and h2b's is just a plain band. I think it depends on the engagement ring. It looked good with mine, but equally my engagement ring looked okay with a plain band too, but the wedding band I ended up choosing had a little v cut in one side which fitted with my engagement ring better than a plain non-shaped band.
I think I do like diamonds in wedding rings, but only very subtle or small ones. I think large amounts should be reserved for eternity or engagement rings.
I would have liked maybe one small diamond in h2b's ring, but he just wanted something light and plain.
"Of course I'm not wedding obsessed!!"

My wedding ring has diamonds in- my husband chose this by himself. He neither owns or wears a wedding ring as its incompatabile with his work. I bought him a watch instead.

H2b has gone for a plain White gold band and I've gone for White gold band with 8 spaced out diamonds, ring is only 3mm so diamonds ain't huge, if and when I get eternity ring I will go for one with diamonds together, already got my eye on one lol, pics on my profile, I'll add a pic tonight of engagement and wedding ring together xx

Wow - lots of reaction to those questions!
Its great to see that you are all making the decision based on your personal preferences and not just following the trend.
Here's another question - "If your white gold ring has started to go yellow - how much does it cost you to have it re-dipped?"
White gold rings are usually plated with Rhodium to make them as white as possible but the Rhodium can start to wear off within a few months. Some White Gold has a high level of Palladium in it and doesn't need to be Rhodium plated as often.
Check with your supplier that their white gold is 'Palladium Rich' or you'll find yourself paying out for replating every 6 months or so. We recently surveyed High Street Jewellers to find out how much they charge and the range was amazing. The cheapest we found was £24 and the most expensive was over £60! So it pays to shop around!

We went for plain bands as that is what the h2b wanted for his due to his job. I'm going to save the extra diamonds for a nice eternity ring ;0)
CommentAuthorLittle Kettle
I've got a total of 8 diamonds in my (platimun) wedding ring - 4 on each side of the curve. We tried it with it plain, but it just didn't do as much for my e-ring as it did with them in (was my mum's idea and the designer didn't think it would work, but was happily surprised)! H2B's is a plain palladium with bevelled edge - no bling for him!

My wedding ring has got 15 little diamonds in and H2B's is just a plain 6mm band (thanks to Smooch) My Engagement ring, although only a few months old has already started to tarnish on the palm side........have a feeling it will need Rhodium plated again very soon

I originally wanted diamonds in my wedding ring. But when I tried some on (with smooch) they just didnt look right against my engagement ring. My engagement ring is quite blingy, and the diamonds in the wedding bands just seemed to clash. So i opted for a simple plain wedding band that compliments my engagement ring beautifully. My h2b has chosen a band without diamonds. I personally think mens wedding bands with diamonds look lovely, but my h2b doesnt like them.
I am now Mrs Stacey Stiles and loving it!
CommentAuthorMagicFairies
We originally wanted plain white gold bands but it looked too bright and too wide next to my engagement ring, but the shop assistant showed us a matching pair of brushed white gold rings with three small diamonds set in them and we fell in love with them - even h2b loved them! Obviously we left it for a while in case we changed our minds and had a look at some other rings but nothing was as amazing as those and we both agreed so we got them :) If only everything else was that simple! x

I'm having diamonds in mine simply because we got my engagement ring in america and its yellow gold but a different grading to what you can get in england so the golds dont match but the diamonds following the same line as my engagement ring hide this!
CommentAuthorsmooch
MissIndecisive, You shouldn't have to worry about diamonds falling out!
I can't speak for other jewellers but we sell over 8000 rings a year, the majority of which have some diamonds, but we don't see many that have lost their stones. There must be over 50,000 Smooch wedding rings out there but we only get a few back to have stones replaced (which we do free under our lifetime guarantee).
Wedding rings are much less likely to lose stones than Engagement Rings are because the diamonds tend to be set lower in Wedding Rings. However any reputable jeweller should replace lost stones unless there has been some damage to the ring that has caused the stone to come out.
One word of caution - although diamonds are very hard they are also brittle so if you bang the stone against something hard you can cause it to split or crack - and then there is a danger that the stone could come out. However as long as you don't do anything silly your diamonds should stay put.

I keep checking my claws on my E ring as I had one a few years back and although it wasn't a cheap ring the claw broke off and I lost the diamond. Unfortunately it was a few weeks after the insurance on it had run out. Would you say if the claws break that is something we have done or just part of a bad design? Is there anyway of avoiding this from happening?

XjoX Unfortunately claw settings are the most vulnerable as they tend to catch on things and can become weaker because of that. There's not much you can do about it I'm afraid. A few jewellers will guarantee their work for life but most of the High Street chains simply give you a 'free' insurance policy that lasts for a year or two. If the diamond is lost you might be able to claim on your household contents insurance. Without seeing the ring I can't comment on the possibility of it being the design to blame but it would be difficult to prove in any case. I know its no help to you now but the most important thing is to make sure the guarantees you get are strong. And, as with everything, paying a little bit more can make a big difference to the quality. Most better quality jewellers will offer a free service where they'll check your ring is still okay and the setting is firm. Sorry I can't help any more than that.

yes!! the only ring that looked ok with my engagement ring was a plain band or a half eternity with diamonds. So i went for the diamonds! lol
H2B opted for a plain band, he didnt like any with diamonds in it.

Thanks for the advice I will keep an eye on this one and hope that it doesn't have any problems. I know the h2b paid a lot of money for it so hopefully it will be alright.
As for the rings do people think that they should match or is it OK to have something different? We went for matching rings apart from his is thicker than mine but is anyone having something completely different from each other?
Also could you clarify if it makes a difference in wear from 9crt and 18crt? I opted for 18crt as it matches my E ring but I've been told they will wear out quicker if I wear them together. Is this true?
CommentAuthorLittle Kettle
I think it's fine not to have matching rings. There's no way that Dave wanted diamonds in his ring and mine looks better with them due to the e-ring. Also different metals - mine plat and his palladium. I think it's whatever works for you Hx

XjoX We're always happy to advise - so on to your question about the difference in hardness between 9ct and 18ct gold. Its not a simple answer so please bear with me.
We are asked this question all the time but its not easy to give a straightforward answer. We've checked with the Birmingham Assay Office to make sure what we are saying is completely accurate. They are one of the four independant government organisations that are responsible for hallmarking in the UK. The others are London, Sheffield and Edinburgh.
Hallmarking is the oldest form of consumer protection and has been used in the UK since the 13th Century. A UK Hallmark GUARANTEES the purity of the gold in your ring (or any other jewellery).
But purity does not compare with hardness. The old rule of thumb used to be that 9ct is harder than 18ct but that is only true when it is in ingot form in the Bullion dealers vault.
Once you start to work with any metal using heat or pressure the hardness will change. It is also affected by the addition of other metals which are there to make the gold more 'workable' or to change it's colour -we add Palladium to yellow gold in order to make it white for instance.
It is perfectly possible to have a 9ct gold item that is softer than an 18ct or even a 22ct item - because the alloys can be different and the 'work hardening' that occurs when we are making the rings will have a massive effect on the finished item.
We sell 1000's of rings a year and frequently pair a Platinum Ring with a Palladium Ring or a 9ct Gold with an 18ct Gold ring. In the last ten years we haven't had a single complaint about 'differential' wear. In other words there are tens of thousands of Smooch rings out there with rings or oither metals and we haven't seen a single problem.
So the short answer is - don't worry about it. Your rings may wear each other down but it will take decades and the choice of metals doesn't really seem to matter.
I'll be putting a full explanation about this on our website soon - sorry its so complicated.
