I start my new job on Monday (I have been a student for 3 years) and so very much looking forward to earning a wage again (even though a nurse's wage isn't great!) We are planning to use my wage to start booking things for the wedding - photographer, videographer and my dress are the first three things on our list (we already have the venue and registrar booked). For those of you who have booked your photographer/videographer and chosen your dress can I ask how much of a deposit you have to pay upfront??? Is it a set fee or a percentage of the overall cost? Also when do you have to pay the rest by - installments? Or nearer your wedding date?
Thanks in advcane :-)

The deposit will vary venue to venue/supplier to supplier.
I paid for my dress up-front as I bought it at a sample sale; I've seen other ladies pay anything from 20-50% as a deposit.
Our photographer requires a £500 deposit. This equates to 20% of the overall cost.
The baker we're looking at wants a £150 deposit on our £450 cake. Others we saw wanted £50, others £100, some more.
Most reception venues we looked at wanted between £500-1500 deposit. Ours wanted 25%, or £2800.
So, it depends.

It depends on who you go with and where you are hunni. Some people have to pay half some people pay a percentage and some people pay £50-100. Sorry but there is no one answer to this! Its a case of picking your suppliers and then asking them I'm afraid
I could tell you what we did but it might be more or even less for you!

As Hails said, it depends on who you go with etc.
Our Venue is £4,000 to hire & we paid £1,500 deposit.
Our cake is £350 & we paid £50 deposit.
Our photographer is £950 & we paid £200 deposit.
Our Registrar is £529 & we paid £50 deposit.
It's best to just ask about for quotes & then ask how much the deposit would be :) xx

As with the other ladies, you are best off just asking as prices vary greatly!
For my venue we payed a £300 deposit
For the photographer we payed a £100 deposit
For transport we payed a £100 deposit
And for the band we payed a £200 deposit.
I haven't got my dress yet, but my friend who is getting married this year had to pay a 50% deposit which worked out at just under £500.
And paying the final fees on mine can either be done in installments, or have the remainder payed off between 2 months and 1 week before the wedding. But as previously said, all suppliers are different. To be safe I would say make sure you have around £1000 in the bank before you start looking otherwise you may be dissapointed if you can't afford the deposit at the time and the supplier gets booked by someone else whilst you're saving for it xxx

Thank you :-) I am hoping to put £500 each month towards the wedding so that sounds like it might be enough to book something /pay a deposit either every month or every other month - roll on Feb 26th (first pay day) and then the fun can really start!!
Sounds good that you can pay final installments nearer to the day as we have some shares to cash in in September 14 which equate to half of our budget and was worried that we might need to pay things off before then (we get married 22.12.14) but sounds like we should be okay?

For our venue, we paid £750 out of a total spend of £3'000.
Photographer was 20 percent.
Most places will be between ten and fifty percent. Dresses are usually 50 percent deposit.

Yeah you should be fine with the shares Sarah, most places dont ask for full cost to be payed before 2 months prior to the wedding and September gives you three months, so I can't see why there would be a problem with that :) xxx

Yeah I think there are very few brides who have the finances in place to pay for everything before they start booking.
