I was planning on having a normal tiered sponge cake, decorated and coloured to match my theme but I've been having a look on the net and have come across some lovely looking cupcake arrangements and with the cupcake case and the icing decorations they actually can match your theme even more but I'm not sure what to do. I would need 100 cup cakes and I'd like a star shaped sponge to sit on top so I'm wondering if it would look too much..

i thought about cupcakes as i thought it would be cheaper... not at all! they were more expensive than the bespoke 4-tier cake we eventually designed and have now ordered.

    astronomical!

How about the bottom tier being traditional cake that you can then cut, and the top two layers being cup cakes? You get to have both then.

The christening cake we had for our son was 3 tiers of cupcakes then a cake on the top which is what we cut for the guests!

We were looking into this but a friend said she would make the cake for us so we are now having a 3 tier tradional cake.
So we were going to have cupcakes as favours instead but like someone said above they can work out just as expensive if not more so then normal cakes because of the detail being so small..............we have now gone to option c and are having cake pops as favours instead :-) (£1 each instead of £3 each)

I'm having a 7 tier cup cake thingy but my dear mother has volunteered to make them herself along with my MIL2B (who doesn't know she's volunteered yet) and since my cousin is an icer for a top cake maker she's teaching my mum how to ice so she'll be near to perfect for the big day, bless her otherwise it's £65 for a large cupcake and £2 each for the others :(

We are having a 5 tier cupcake tower, with a cutting cake on the top. It isnt a cheap option as I thought! Doh. But we have found a friend who is starting her own business so its within our budget. xx

I'm having a traditional cake. Cup cakes can work out even more expensive and even if you make them yourselves you still have to buy the stand etc. What you can do though is get a smaller stand to display some on and then get the staff to keep filling it up.

We are having a top tier covered in butter cream and then 50 or so cup cakes in a shabby chic style. Fits in perfectly with our theme and it is costing us about £200 which is £100 less than the original bird cage cake we asked a quote for. So I'm happy! :) x

you can have both, a normal cake and a handful of cupcakes, remember you don't need to provide a cupcake for every single guest and your left overs from the day spill over into the evening :)

I really wanted to do cupcakes (hadn't looked into the prices or anything yet though), but now I'm re-considering after reading this! However, two of my friend's mum's make wedding cakes, so might ask them if they would do them and how much it would cost. I just thought it would fit with our wedding if we had cupcakes - nice and simple :-)

louise you don't need to cater for all 150 esp if you have the sort of traditional large cupcake cake on top for cutting etc plus as i've just found out not that many people like cake.

i'm doing it simply so i can have choc chip, blueberry, etc etc

Well I'm havin a rather cheapo cake compared to lots of u ladies! I'm buyin my wedding cake from M&S. They do upto 4 layers I think in either sponge or fruit. They come with plain icing and they sell the pillars separately for you to tower them. Think I'll have just 2 layers of fruit - enough to slice up for an additional dessert option for my 53 day guests, and then I'm havin a feather cake topper made to match my theme from the company who's made all of my feather and crystal bouquets. The cake at most will cost me £50 and the topper £35, so that's an£85 traditional wedding cake that'll serve it's purpose! To be honest I think my guests will be more interested in the chocolate fountain with strawberries and marshmellows, yum yum!!
