Hi all, So I bought my dress a few months ago in a sale and it has been hanging in my mums wardrobe since, every time I take it out to try on it looks more and more creased, so I think I'm going to have to have it steamed or something...? 11 Months to go so not for me to worry about now really... but I am worrying about every single little detail, lol, so thought I would air this one! Does anyone know of a way to get crease's out at home? obviously without damaging the dress in anyway? I feel really nervous about taking it to be professionally done, I would be worrying the whole time we were parted! lol! I'm sure it would be ok but I would really rather do myself if I can easily/safely do it? Thanks in advance for any replies :)

Is your dress heavy? If so you may want to rethink storing your dress by hanging it up in the wardrobe. The weight of the dress can pull it down and cause the dress to change shape. I highly recommend storing it folded some where or laid out if possible. My dress is in a cloth garment bag under the bed. Creases can be professionally pressed or you could press and/or steam the dress yourself.

I think it probably would be safer to get it professionally done....I'd be far too nervous to do it myself!!

Mine is exactly the same! Could you take it do a bridal shop and ask them to steam it for you? x
have a really hot shower or bath and then once the water is off just put the dress in the bathroom hung up and the steam will help to get the creases out you may have to do it a few times and its not guaranteed to work as i'm not sure of the material your dress is made out of but its worth a try

Just had another thought, If you own or know someone with a steam Iron wouldn't that work? I might give it a try on my dress when its ready to be worn x

I agree with the others, steam it. I think I'd get it done professionally though, I'd be too nervous to do it myself lol x

If you have the room to do it, I dressed mine onto a dressmakers dummy with the underskirt underneath for the final week.....it was heavy enough to drape down and take any creases out, and having the hoop underneath helped too, to make it stick out as it should....

Thanks for all your ideas girls, my mum has a steam iron so maybe I could try and steam it with that (dont worry I'll be holding it arms length from the dress!)... can't be any different then a garment steamer I am guessing! Unfortunately don't really have the room for it to be laid anywhere or hung on a dummy... If the steam iron doesn't work I guess I'll have to get it done professionally, I am just being overly anxious about letting the dress out of my sight! he he :) Thanks girls x

It will depend on the material of the dress too hun. Different materials there are different methods of de-creasing.
Mine is ivory silk taffeta and the shop owner where I bought my dress showed me that creases can be taken out with a cool iron (she demonstrated it) but to bear in mind that due to the type of material it is it will crease easily anyway. It's the same material as Princess Diana's dress!

Mine was a heavy satin layer with netting underneath and with chiffon (and lots of beading!) over the top of it. I got it cleaned in Vegas before the wedding (as it was cheaper) so the wedding day wasn't a problem. However, the blessing back home was as the dress had been in it's box for 2 weeks and although I got it out as soon as could when we got home, it still creased. I tried hanging it in the bathroom for 4 days before the blessing, but it didn't do anything at all. So my lovely Godmother ironed it inside out (she's a wonderful seamstress so I trusted her, but not myself!) and it did the trick. Like the other ladies have said, it depends on the material.
Vegas baby!

My mum told me that she just hung hers up in the bathroom and left the hot water running in the bath to steam her creases out! She had taffeta.
Nice tip I thought :)

I would not advise anyone to steam iron a wedding dress themselves. Either hang It in the bathroom for a few days or take it to a professional (or at least someone who knows what they are doing. You could serious ruin your dress by borrowing such and such's iron and doing it yourself.

By the way I noticed you are getting married in 9 months. Get it boxed, but after it is boxed make sure you stop yourself from taking it out.

I would honestly leave it to the professionals. My shop steamed mine the day before I picked it up, I did not know they were doing this as part of the service, not even crossed my mind either. You would be so heartbroken if you tried it yourself and messed it up so it's worth being parted from it for just a short while. At least it is in safe hands.
