Morning all. Has anyone who's recently got married, asked for money towards their honeymoon instead of wedding gifts, if so, how much did you end up with? C x

I'm not married yet, but that is exactly what we are planning to do, since we already have all the belongings we need and are a long way off buying a place, xx

We already have a home to move into when we are married, it was a showhome, so we definately don't need anything! But because we've put all our funds into a home and and a wedding, we don't have any resources left for the honeymoon. We are planning on getting married on the saturday and then going straight to the travel agents on sunday to book, scary... C x

Yeah, we are not booking ours till after we are married, hoping that we will have enough money for somewhere nice come september. Are you thinking of booking last minute and going straight away? We were thinking of booking for October/November time, we are getting married end of August, we don't want to rely on the money guests give us, so are hoping that we will have some money left over after we have paid for wedding, but want it to go towards a really nice holiday for us. x

We have to book our hoildays a year in advance at work, so don't really have a choice. We would really like to go to Thailand but that is at least £2000. Which would mean that forty of our guests would have to give at least £50 each, achievable?...hope so...lol. C x
We got married in Vegas then had a reception back here a month afterwards. Even though we had a gift list and this was well utilised, people still gave us money. They were incredibly generous and as I was opening the envelopes onto our bed that night, I was in tears by the sheer amount people had given and their generosity. All in all, we had over 2 grand in £20 notes scattered on the bed. I couldn't believe it!

At the minute that is what we are planning to do as well. There are plenty of companies that allow you to create honeymoon gift lists - here you pick your honeymoon and guests can choose to contribute to the flights or the accomodation or little extras such as champagne on arrival or dinner under the stars. It is a bit of a risk though as if you dont cover the cost of the honeymoon that way its up to you to pay the deficit, though it apparently encourages guests to give more than if they were jsut giving cash as they can see where their money is gonig to.
Sounds a good idea to ask for cash and then go book a holiday the day after...id never though of that! :)
Hope someone can answer your origiinal question - id be very intriqued to hear the answer xxx

You never know, people can be really generous. Thailand sounds lovely. We are pretty flexible/indecisive on where we want to go. x

Yeah, just hoping that the good idea follows through! If people give us cheques (which are sooo outdated!), we won't be going anywhere! C x
CommentAuthorMrs Badger
You could request that guests don't write cheques x

We had a mix of cheques, cash and bank transfers, but it was mostly cash that we received x

I've bumped a thread for you with poems in asking for cash instead of gifts, might give you some ideas

We asked for honeymoon vouchers or money - and everyone gave money. We got quite a bit considering we had a small wedding (17 guests) and only one cheque (rest was cash).
