We live in Scotland but our families are spread from Wales to Essex to Norfolk so we've booked holiday cottages in the grounds of our venue to make sure everyone is close to hand and can maybe make a holiday of it. Thing is they're costing £2500 so do you think people would mind contributing something? We don't know how to ask and we're aware that people are already forking out for flights up here. I pointed out that if we hadn't booked the cottages then guests would have had to pay for their accommodation anyway so they should expect to pay something but I don't know if I'm being cheeky given how much they're spending to get there. And how much would be reasonable?

To be fair most people expect to pay for their own accommodation regardless of how far they have to travel. We are not paying for our guests to stay the night in the hotel we are in and most of them are more than happy to pay the £90 per couple to stay there. They can choose to stay there, book a cheaper b&b down the road or even drive home. How much does it work out per person from what you have booked? You could always say to guests that you have them booked and they are £..... per person if anyone is interested and if they can't afford it then you can use discretion to either bring the limit down a bit or they can book their own independently.

Works out at £178pp for the week which I know is too much. Do you think £100 per couple would be OK? Problem is not everyone is staying for the week. Would we charge them less? Seems harsh on those staying longer that they pay more because others stay less (if that makes sense) because we want them all there for a week

I think people should pay for their own accommodation personally. why should you have to pay for their bed for the night you are already providing them with food and entertainment.

Could you work it out on a nightly rate? That way the people staying for one night don't get the full whack of it but the ones staying for a week get a cheap holiday. I don't think that £178 for a weeks holiday is that bad and its not like they don't know in advance.

I don't think £178 is too much at all, my hotel is £160 for the night and people are paying that! I think anyone would expect to pay for accomodatioon so i would definitley go ahead and ask for money

The easiest thing is to let people book their own accomodation as required. Allows them to find something for their budget and to choose the length of stay.

But we've booked the cottages! If no one stays it will be such a waste.

I think £178 for a week is really good. Our hotel's charging thet per night! The girls are right, most people wouldn't expect you to pay the accommodation (unless you were super rich!) I think I'd work out how much it is per person or per room, per night and put word out that the option is there if anyone wants to take you up on it. As you say, they'd have to pay for accommodation somewhere.

Personally, I'd rather be staying at the venue. Less distance to crawl into bed!

Why don't you say its £30pp per night? that way people pay for what they stay. i would never expect someone to pay for my week away which is what you are technically doing?

Are you finicially able to do this and do you want too. If they are paying to fly upto you then surely they'd be expecting to pay for acc?

You can get flights for £15 as I used to get them a lot when I was working so its not like it costs them that much to get up there. Most of the time it worked out cheaper to fly than it did to drive or catch a train. I know if I were invited to a friends wedding then no matter how far away it was we would still pay for the hotel. Even if it was abroad. We would make the decision to either pay for it and treat it as our holiday or not go. We would never expect the bride and groom to put us up for the night when they have been feeding us all day etc.

Our hotel is quite expensive, so we've told people now roughly how much a room for the night will cost so that they have time to save - as the other ladies have said, everyone expects to pay something for staying! I was bridesmaid for my friends wedding in Vegas and she just paid for my dress and shoes! We paid for the flights and accommodation to get and be out there. I shouldn't worry about asking hun, people will be expecting it :-) x

yeah i agree if people want to come they should pay for their own accommodation, if they were going to be staying over at our venue, which is a hotel, but still close by to home, then they would have to pay themselves, which is £93 per room x

My moh and I are staying at the hotel the night before and the wedding night and her costs are 230 and mine are 300 for 2 nights, I've offered to pay for the night before wed accomodation and she has asked if she could pay for the wedding night for her and her hubby, so yeah I'd rather come to yours and pay 180 for the week. As for guests paying, I've got a bit of the same problem as the hotel only has 25 rooms, and if I want to make sure the bridal party gets there rooms, I have to pay a deposit to hold them - not sure weather just to pay for the rooms for them or ask what they want me to do?

the venue i'm hoping to book ( going to vue in feb and pay deposit if i like it!!) has accomodation for 55 people which not including kids (as they will hav to share there room) will be all my wedding party as i hav to pay for exclusive use i'm going to charge my guests £150 pp for 2 nights and they get all food and drink in that!! so i'm hoping my guests will pay this too!! as just for exclusive use is most ov my budget!!! although i've looked at accomodation nearby and the room rates are similar for 1 night and they only get breakfast so i'm actually saving them money :-)
£178 is excellent value for a week !! u can't even stay in a travel lodge for that !! and u get the gorgeous scenery included !!
were abouts in scotland are u getting married?? as i'm hoping to get married in scotland too!! x

I agree - people should pay for their own accommodation. After all, you're paying for the reception etc. We're travelling from Leeds to Gretna for our wedding - but our guests have had to find their own accommodation and pay for it (we just sent out save the dates and a list of hotels).

I don't think they'll think it's rude in asking....as mentioned if you hadn't arranged accommodation they would be having to sort some kind of accom for themselves anyways. Sit down and divide it up and work out how much you feel sounds reasonable. Maybe look up local hotels to your venue and get an idea of what they would of been paying if the had to find themselves somewhere to stay......that's what i would do. x x x

I think if I was one of your guests and had plenty of time to save up for the accommodation then fair enough but with 6 months to go I know personally there is no way I could afford that per person. Yes guests should be responsible for paying for their accommodation, but because of everyone having different financial limits, guests might want to book somewhere they can afford without having the embarassment of telling you that they can't afford what the cottages cost for the week. So yes they should pay but maybe they could have had the choice of staying at the venue before it was all booked? That is just my opinion because I am as poor as a church mouse, lol. x

We have a fair few guests coming down from Newcastle and they're all paying for their own accomodation. We're paying enough as it is without paying for everyones hotels too. They'll have plenty of notice to save up and book
