    Hi there,

I wear rigid gas permeable contact lenses (ie they are longlasting ones, and I take them out every night and clean them).

If I happen to cry - or even just 'fill up' a bit - they tend to feel dry and 'picky' and uncomfortable for the rest of the day, even if I take them out and clean them. Something in the tears must not work well with the contact lenses, or it affects my eyes in some way?

It's almost certain that I'll shed a few tears on my wedding day, even if it's just when I'm getting ready in the morning, or when we say our vows... (I fill up at other people's weddings, never mind my own!). But I hate the thought that my eyes are going to be sore and uncomfortable all day.

So I'm wondering have other people experienced this? I'm wondering whether to try some soft disposable contact lenses instead, just for the wedding - does the same happen with them? I really couldn't bear to wear my glasses, and I'm far too shortsighted to manage without my lenses.

Thanks in advance for any ideas or advice! xx

I wear the monthlies that you take out at night and never noticed any problems apart from if I rub my right eye it falls out (i have astigmatism in it but not severe enough for special lenses).

My mum has the exact same contacts prescription as me and has dalies and I started with dalies. So I'm planning asking her to buy me a box for my wedding day and honeymoon so I don't have to bother with cleaning them just stick them on the side, or the mirror, or h2b head lol.

i use dailies now but have used monthlies in the past and i don't find them a problem

you can get drops you can use with contacts that will help with them drying out but if your worried i would just ask your optician trecommend some dailies for you to use for a few days.they might even give you a few free i know i go a few free ones to see how i got on with them before i changed over.

Its probably worth seeing your optician for a trial, they will be able to advise you on the many different lenses that are available these days. I think a monthly soft one or the dailes could be a good option for you.
You will have to try a pair out with a weepy film :-) x

Thanks so much to everyone for your thoughts - I really appreciate it. I will definitely have a go at the dailies. Expect they will feel really weird after using the smaller 'hard' lenses, but sounds like they are worth a try! Love the thought of testing them out with a weepy film :-) x

I used to have daily disposable lenses - I used to find that for some reason I would always get a little bit of make-up or grit under one of them and it was so easy to just take it out, throw it away and pop a new one in. I was lucky that both eyes were the same so I didn't have to make sure I had left and right all the time. I wasn't able to have contacts for a very long time as I have dry eyes so I had to wait until the technology was developed ... very annoying.

I would recommend trying the daily ones and if they are ok you can get some just for the day if you like your regular lenses.

Have you thought about the contacts that you don't need to take out except at the end of the month?

I literally put in a pair of contacts first thing on the first of the month and they get taken out and chucked away at the end of the month and I have one night a month without wearing contacts (which I hate). Its the next best thing to having 20/20 vision as you only have to mess around taking them in or out once a month and sleep in them the rest of the time. I don't have any problems crying in them either and I expect to be welling up on the big day too :-)

i wear monthly disposable lenses and sadly have had reason to cry a lot recently but have found my lenses to have been great, the large amount of tears dont wash them out, nor do they feel dry or sore. :)

i used to wear dailies and now have monthly ones and to be honest ive never really noticed it when i cry. they can get a bit uncomfy but not as bad as you say yours are.

i would go to the opticians and have a word with them and see what they say.

kastobe....just wondering how much you pay for those sort of lenses?

I cry like a baby very easily and I'll wear either dailes or monthly, whichever I have at the time. Never had a single problem with them. x

I have the same lenses as kastobe and they are extra oxygenated to let more air through (or that's what they tell me!)
Never had the issues you've experienced but did even with dailies got itchy eyes when near smokey areas - love the thin and light feeling of the monthly continuous wear - they are even thinner than the disposables in my opnion xx

So helpful to hear from people who wear the monthlies or dailies - I'm really glad to know that they don't seem to cause you any problems when you cry, like mine do! I will definitely ask my optician whether I could try them out, and use them for my wedding.

The gas permeables are more fiddly because you have to clean them every night, but they are very economical because they last for years (well the optician says I should replace them every 2 years, but if you look after them well, they can last longer than that), and they only cost about £80 for the pair.

Sadly though I did lose one last month so that was an extra £40 for a replacement!!

The joys of GP's! I can't wear them, I'm too wimpy. It's worth having a trial with soft lenses. One thing i would say though is it might take you a little bit longer to learn how to get them in and take them out because they are floppy and fold more when you blink and stay really sucked on to your eyes. Can't just pop them out like the Gp's. Good luck! x
