I was just wondering if any one knows the vows for a civil ceremony? I know they are different from the church vows but have no idea what they are! Xx

The registrar sent us a booklet after we'd given notice with all the wording options in. I'm sure you'll get something similar too. In case you can't wait though, here are the options we've been given to choose from:
    Declaratory Words:
    1. I do solemnly declare that I know not of any lawful impediment why I, (name, may not be joined in matrimony to (name).
    2. I declare that I know of no legal reason why I, (name), may not be joined in marriage to, (name).
    3. By replying 'I am' to the question 'Are you, (name), free lawfully to marry (name)?'
    Contracting Words:
    1. I call upon these persons here present to witness that I, (name), do take thee, (name), to be my lawful wedded wife (or husband).
    2. I, (name), take you, (name), to be my wedded wife (or husband).
    3. I, (name) take thee (name) to be my wedded wife (or husband).
    Ring Exchange:
'I give you this ring as a sign of our marriage and a symbol of our love'
The above statement can be said as is or can be followed by any one of 9 additional 'promises' which to be honest I can't be bothered to type out right now. Sorry. I hope the rest was helpful though.

Our registrar send us 10 different options to choose from! We have decided to mix & match bits from the 2 choices that we narrowed it down to as the vow was purely as Showgirl has written above & we wanted to say a bit more to each other. Once you have booked your registrar for the date & time that you want (unless you have already) they should send you a list of options to choose from :)

One thing I am glad about living in Scotland and being able to have a Humanist Wedding... Legally all my OH and I have to say is 14 words stating the "*** takes *** to be wife/husband etc" and we discovered that we don't say the question posed to guests if they know of any lawful impediment. :D
