If you don't like the priest and you think it would be easier having a civil ceremony and the reception venue then go for it, I expect you'll find it cheaper too! x

I'm even thinking of cancelling the church and having a civil ceremony, it's not 100% what I want, I want the church but having the civil ceremony at my reception venue makes everything so much easier!

civil at venue... its no good if u dont like the priest... it will not be meaningful and you may dread running into him again. less on flowers and no cars... cuts costs.

Its your wedding, not his mums!! Do what you want, if your not comfortable being married by the priest then have a civil ceremony, you dont want the most important part of the day ruined by a horrible man!!

That's ridiculous - it really bugs me that 'men of the cloth' are supposed to be non-judgemental and open to everyone, but some have such narrow minded views!! We're getting married in Church, I was never christened but liked the thought of doing things the traditional way so really wanted the church wedding. Little did I know that the bishop needs to approve our wedding first because I'm not christian lol I expect it's just a formality but if not we'll definitely be changing to getting married at the venue x

my nanny doesn't approve of us having a civil ceremony but at the end of day its our wedding and we have to have what we want. it sounds like you wouldnt feel comfortable getting married at that church so maybe a civil ceremony would be the better way to go? x

I'm not sure if you have thought about this option but it could be a way of getting everything that you both wanted. You could have the civil at the venue and the reception etc then the next day go for a blessing in a church of your choice as you don't need to be in that parish in order to be blessed which means you get the same church service just without the legal side of things which you don't need anyway. Blessing are based on donations and don't carry the same fees as an actual wedding. We are doing it this way as the h2b wanted a church but we didn't like our local parish due to its poor disabled access and they wouldn't let us get married in the disabled friendly church.

I agree though the MIL has nothing to do with it. Its down to you and the h2b how and where you get married.

you should do what the two of you are happy with, if you both dont like the priest you wont be happy on your wedding day and if you both agree and are happy to have a civil ceremony which could be just as nice as the church then it should be your decision not anyone elses :) x

it should be what you want... is getting married in front of god what you want or getting married and saying your vows in front of a registar...

im not religious and think a church ceremony when im not religious is a bit ... wrong but thats my opinion on me and h2b... so we choose our venue as the room where we will get married is beautiful and everything we want ... we didnt want god or a priest we wanted our friends and family and our own take on a ceremony and adding what we want

you just have to weigh up if a church ceremony is infact important to you... you can always find another church with a different priest .....if a church ceremony is important to you...

if its that important but you still want a religious vibe to the ceremony once the officiant goes out of the room (after you are now man and wife stuff) you can have biblical readings then if you wanted

and sod what anyone else thinks

My parents are Catholic, but they don't care where we marry and agree with me that as neither me nor my OH have attended Chruch since the ages of about 10, and neither of us believe in God, we should have a civil ceremony. My OHs mum is Protestant (though hasn't attended church for god know's how long, so TBH I don't really think she can say she's THAT religious..) and his gran is VERY religious. I don't think his mum is too pleased that we won't be having a church wedding; his gran doesn't even know yet and I can guarantee she'll say we're sinners, etc... Frankly, I don't care. I'm not religious, neither is my OH, so we are not marrying in a church, end of story.

If you want to marry in a church for the religious significance, then I think you should, even if the priest isn't very nice; but if not, have your civil ceremony, and who cares what others think?.. It is your day, and IMO it's not right to marry in a church if you don't believe in what you're doing. It also adds extra stresses such as travel issues, which is fine if a church wedding is what you want, but unnecessary hassle otherwise.

Some civil venues are BEAUTIFUL, I've looked at some really really nice ones, nicer than the churches in my area lol.

Definitely don't get married at the church if you don't feel that the priest was supportive.

My mum is RC and although I know she would like me to get married in a church she hasn't said anything about us having a civil ceremony.

Is there another church that you can consider?
