I was looking at ways to save a few pennies on the wedding as I have my heart set on a venue thats a little outa my price range. Anyway, I have priced the food individually (instead of using the set menu) so that I can leave out bits we dont need, like sorbet. it works out at the same price, more or less, to a carvery which would offer a choice of 3 meats, 2 pots and 2veg.

Should I have a 3 course set menu chosen by h2b and myself or a 2 course choice buffet meal? hmmm....

our venue would still only let us have one choice no matter which menu we weent off to make sure the meal ran smoothly. Have you double checked ur venue will allow a choice if u dont use their package menu? its been a big headache for us as most ppl would prefer a choice.

We are having a set meal as it is £3.00 per person cheaper. I would have preferred to have a choice but then it is getting the menu choices back to the venue in time and the extra money and too much of a headache at an already stressfull time (in my opinion)
But as suzky says most people would prefer a choice. xx

the choice is like a hot buffet, you would serve yourself I suppose but there would be a choice of meat etc and dessert.
I like the idea of a sit down meal but it just means no choice for the guests. It also means we would be waited on though

is it a traditional wedding where the full bridal breakfast would be preferred and then evening buffet afterwards?

If I go for the buffet option, its a carvery...then I would maybe have a finger buffet later on

I was amazed when I saw the price of hot buffets as I thought they would be cheaper than a sit down meal but was amazed when I found the opposite. I would personally prefer a sit down meal where everyone was waited on, especially if you are having another buffet later. You can always offer your guests the vegetarian option as a choice

All the places we looked at were really expensive to have a sit down meal with different choices, and for a set one I just know there will be some of our guests that would not like it and leave it which would really cheese me off, so we have decided to put on a lovely buffet with lots of delicious patisserie cakes etc. so we can cater for everyone and if any is left, my h2b will be having it for breakfast, lol, my nickname for him is Genghis as he is a pig with food so it won't go to waste! :)

lol, you would be my nightmare guest! ;)
It is a posh buffet as my h2b works for a company that distribute really nice food to restaurants etc. To be honest the food that a lot of you will have for your set meals comes from his workplace so we will just have posh buffet food they do at half the price. He knew there would be perks to his job eventually, lol. I don't think I will be eating much of anything except for some cakes though as I will be too nervous/happy/excited that I won't feel like eating. But drinking will be fine, and it won't make my stomach bloat and burst my dress, lol. x

our venue would only let us choose from their set menu for everyone with the exception of children and guests with dietary requirments. i couldnt believe it when children are the same price as adults tho xx

That is daft mrsbarkertobe, I thought it was normal for all venues to charge half the price of an adults meal for weddings, they are half the size after all, lol. After the age of 12 then they charge adult prices usually. What a shame! I would be making sure they ate every morsel on their plate, lol. x

I'm having a set meal, if they don't like it then its tough!
At the end of the day we're paying for it so we'll decide.
Also i don't like the idea of everyone getting up and down to go and get their dinner!

I liked the idea of a sit down meal but with the options available at a hot buffet. As that wasnt available (sadly lol) we opted for a choice of menu for our sit down meal. It's costing an extra £6 per person which is steep but I'd rather have an option that they'd then enjoy than pay for a set meal that they push around the plate. We're going for crowd pleasers too - melon or soup for starter, pot roast beef or chicken balmoral for main and profiteroles or fruit meringue for dessert. No fancy flavourings in there either - straight forward good food x Go with what suits you x

I am ok with everyone getting up for their dinner, lol, but only because there will be a lot of children there and babies, so I would rather it be relaxed for them all to get up when they want rather than getting annoyed at anyone having to get up during a sit down meal. That is the great thing about this forum though, every bride is different, and it is fun reading all the different reasons for doing and not doing certain things. :)

I'm having a set menu but we have two choices for the starter and main as one is veggie and the other is meat/fish. I wasn't going to pay extra to give people choices and as it stands they have a choice of one or the other. The two main fussy eaters out of the guests are happy to have a plain chicken breast instead of one with all the trimmings and the venue are happy to do this as its easy for them to do.

i think if you choose something that is kinda universally accepted (couldnt think of how to word it lol) then a sit down is nice as you get waited on wcih is what i would like for my big day! i think it also depends on your guests, are they the eat anything sort or are they quite picky?
personlly we are going for a 2 course meal. 1 to keep costs down and 2. because most people are way too stuffed full for dessert! we are going for a traditional roast i think as everyone will like it and a vegetarian option if there are any coming lol

Same as you Natalie. Set meal. There's only 20 people coming anyway so they'll all know what it is and no veggies so it'll probably be the chicken. Who doesn't like chicken?
If you're paying you can have what you want, if I'm paying you get what your given! If they don't like it there's a harvester 2 min walk away.

Plus, if anyone does have the cheek to complain, I'll explain they were lucky to get that as I didn't want a sit down meal and was badgered into it.
