Here's a tip for any brides who have family or friends living in the states!

I have fallen in love with Dessy dresses for my 3 bridesmaids, but when I priced them up at bridal shops they were coming in at £200-250 each...which is waaaaaay more than I want to pay. When I looked at USA sites I saw I could get them for (factoring in exchange rates etc) about £60/70 pounds each....but the shipping and then customs charges would have brought them back up to what the bridal shops are asking.

Soooooo....I realised my niece is visting from Boston this August, I asked my sister in law if I could have them shipped to her in the states and send them over in nieces luggage when she visits. So I get them at the knock-down price with tiny inter-USA shipping rates and carried to me for free.

If you have loved ones in the US, see if you can have the dresses shipped to them. If nobody is coming over the pond they can still ship them to the uk marked as 'gifts' at a fairly low cost and you won't have to pay the extortionate cost of customs.

    Worth a thought!

You can still be hit with customs charges by bringing them in this way. Sure they'd have to search the luggage or question the gift designation on the package. It's a lot less likely but it can still happen.

surely she could just take it out of the packaging and keep it in her suitcase unwrapped so then they wouldnt need to question them even then she could still just say that they were gifts she has bought if the decided to question qwhy she had 3 identical dresses in different sizes. It's not like there's any way to prove otherwise? i wouldnt worry about that happening at all

if you know anyone who is in the US military and who is based here then you can get them shipped to their address - no customs whatosever :) (as long as it's a military address AFPO or whatever). I do this all the time as my friend's daughter is married to a guy in the USAF.
