    hello everyone!!
Tell me..... When you ask your cousin to make your wedding cake for you as she does it as a hobby.... Should I be SHOCKED when says how much it would be???? Or is it just me????

Not really, unless she previously said she would do it for free or for a certain price and then quoted you something different.
If I had a friend or family member that offered to make a wedding cake for me I would offer to pay for the materials. However, if I asked someone to make a cake for me I would expect them to quote me a price for that cake.

I agree - if they offered, I would expect to pay for ingredients at least. And of course I'd get them a thank you gift

If I'd asked, I would expect to be quoted a price....however, if I'm completely honest, I would hope for a discount, particularly of she does it as a hobby rather than an actual business.

Tricky... I make cupcakes for my village cafe and they cost a bomb to make so I understand that they end up being more than you think. But. If it were me im afraid id be miffed. If thats her wedding present to you, it must be cheaper for her than buying you something decent, surely! My aunty is making my cake and I'd be really upset if she charged me lol.

if her price is out of budget, say no. I was going to get 3 plain iced sponges from tesco and tier them and put real flowers on it, that would have been £50 ish.

good luck with your tricky dilemma!

I'm the same... My aunty is making my cake for pleasure.... she's really good at it and did my cousin's cake... shes not a pro but she has the skill and was really excited to make it... I would be surprised if she charged now as it ahs been implied its free!!!

How much out of interest, is she charging?!!

    I'll be honest.

If she had said to you "OH! i'll make your wedding cake" and it was implied as free yes it would be cheeky to charge.

But I think as its the other way round I think it's a bit cheeky of you to ask her then just assume it will be free...

a family friend is makingmy cake shes amazing and does it as her hobby but i asked her so i expected to pay the going rate i was thinking around £400 i was quoted £550 for the cake pictured bellow. but in the end she said if i paid £60 towards some of the kit she needed to make some of the sea shell decorations and to buy the topper £18 on ebay , she would do the rest as a gift to us! i was well happy with that but i would never have expected her to do that . Even if she offered to make the cake for you she probably didnt expect you to think it would be free just miss communication if the price is good and you trust her abilities then just go with it :)im sure it will be worth it

We're getting friends to do it, but we're having four friends each make a tier, so it may be that they will be able to manage the cost of that themselves. However I wouldn't assume that. One of my Facebook friends does wedding cakes and she spent £160 on ingredients for the last one she did.

A family friend offered to make my cupcakes if I bought all the ingredients. It will cost about £15 for the ingredients and then another £15 for some transport boxes, but that was all made very clear when she offered.

i was a little like this - my auntie makes cakes and i asked her to make mine and she said that she will do the cake for free as long as i buy the ingredients. i thought she would have done the whole thing as a wedding present but from adding up the costs the ingredients are going to cost about £200 for our 5 tier cake so that is a bit much for me to ask her. she is putting her time in for free as part of her wedding present to us but she is also getting us something else too xx

My take on this is that if you asked her to make your cake then you should expect to pay for it. If she offered to do your cake as a present you need to clarify if that is the baking, decorating and ingredients or if it's the labour and you pay for the ingredients. Wedding cakes don't come cheap and can be a lot of work.

aww well dont get upset ;) just speak to her have that conversation hun. would you have paid her to make you a cake if she wasnt related to you? if you would then just go with it ask her what its going to cost and if it seems high be totally honest and say you dont wish to offend but you want to get a few more quotes so you get the best price as you have no idea what a wedding cake should cost (bit of blagging) and dont let it get you down, im guessing cake was in your budget anyway so you havent lost anything and you neer know what will happen you might find she isnt charging anywhere near the prices and is just covering costs??? dont let it get you down its not that big a problem and once you have spoken to her and no where you stand you will feel much better x

I'd definitely pay for all ingredients and any new tools that may be needed specifically for my cake.. But nothing else xxx

can't believe close friends/family are charging after not quoting... thats actually quite a con mans way of getting business... doing the work and pushing it on you, under he illusion its a favour then charging you at the last minute... and to charge more than the ingredients is really off.

Since she said she's be making it; I would assume that if it was me then I would be paying for ingredients but the actual making e.t.c. would be a gift :S

My future cousin in law used to make cakes as a hobby but now does it as a business; she didn't offer any future family discount though when I asked about our engagement cake; she quoted us full whack and extra for decorations e.t.c... :S

some people don't care, I have a friend who offered to make it, but the kid of cake I want is very extravagant and will be very time consuming to make so said to her not to worry, I know my cousin would make one for me aswell, she makes all sorts of pretty cakes, she made one for my birthday that when you cut into it it was rainbow layers, but shes my moh and will hopfuly be busy helping me with other things and I want the cake made as fresh as possible.
