Does anyone know if I can change my first name as well as my surname when I get married?

I want to change my name Joanne to as I hate it and don't have a middle name. I was thinking about changing it to Jo Anne. Would I be able to do this or would I have to go through a solicitor to do this?

I also want to go away on honeymoon with my new surname and heard I can change this 3 months before the wedding. Would that apply to any changes I make to my forenames?

You can do it for free - contact the citizens advice bureau. If you put a letter in with your passport application saying you will now be knows as Jo Anne *surname* they apparently can't refuse.
Have a chat with the CAB xxx

PS. I'm changing from Rosanna to Rosie as I've never been called Rosanna!

When it comes to your married name, when is your honeymoon? as if you have time to change it you can do so then go on your honeymoon?
Dean is changing his surname by deed poll to be Killgallon-Tilley then when we get married I will take that name as I am Killgallon he is Tilley but he has no legal right to take my surname when we are married & we dont wanna change both our names by deed poll and pay twice.. We are staying in the country for our honeymon but it will be about 2 months after we get married so even if we were going away we would still have time to change our passports

Find out who you are & do it on purpose!

    Re: passports and name changes...

You can change your name on your passport up to three months before the marriage. You can be sent a postdated passport that will not become valid until the day you marry. You do not have to complete a marriage certificate to get this postdated passport, but you will need it countersigned by the superintendant registrar at the registry office through which you will be married. They are obliged to contact the passport people if you did not get married as planned for some reason - as are you.

Be warned that if you are going to the United States on your honeymoon, a postdated passport is not adviseable since they have a policy of not accepting them. Instead, you are better off using the passport in your maiden name and then applying for a new passport on return using your marriage certificate.

Other countries, do not seem to have the same problems, but suggest you check with the country's embassy if in doubt.

It is also worth making sure that your passport and travel documents (visas, flight bookings etc.) all show the same name.

In reference to the man taking the woman's surname- I spoke to my local registrar about this and she said that there's no issue with the deed poll about this after the wedding. He would do it the same way you would- when changing name on bank accounts, passports etc, you just provide the marriage certificate as reason. There's no additional paperwork, apparently.

Prior to wedding... not a clue...

I know that you can change your last name by deed-poll, on the internet, and I think some of them give you the option of changing just your first, or your first as well.

I've considered changing my first name, but my middle names need changing first haha!

husband's can take their wife's last name and it is perfectly legal and costs nothing at all. You can call yourself anything you want as long as it is not for fraudulent reasons. My nephew took his step dad's name..fell out..took his wife's name...got divorced..went back to his step dad's name..think he did this cos it's I talian and his new wifey liked the thought of it lol

i am taking my wifes name when get married, now from what i have found out apparently for goverment side of things passport, dvla etc will accept marrige cert to change details........ but a bank etc wont and require deed poll as proof.

i will be phoning passport office tomorrow as am now with in my 3months till wedding so need to know that the form from vicor will get me my passport as i fly out day after wedding, if not i will just do i deed poll and only tell them of name change before wedding.

also i belive if a woman double barrels name then she will need deed drawn up.

the thing i dont get with deed polls is there is no record kept of them

My h2b changed his name by deedpoll to the same as mine, hasnt changed his passport yet though as hes waiting for it to run out first, banks will want deedpoll as proof of name change.
@ sommerville_10 make sure if you change it by deedpoll to inform the vicar or registra as they will have drawn up your paperwork before hand they can be funny about these things weve been told to bring all paperwork so the registra can take copies
