I have stolen this from another forum, but I think it hits the mark quite well so thought I would share it.
Question: "If you were presented with two boxes, one had your Grandparents' wedding film in it and the other had your Grandparents' wedding photos in it and you could only choose one box, which one would you choose?"

for me I would rather watch the video. To see and hear things, and get more of the atmosphere. See more of the natural smiles and not all posed shots. Hear the laughter, hear their happy voices. See the way the dress moved, to see lots of people that wouldnt be included in the official photos.
i had already decided on having both, but thought this might help those still in a quandry about it!

I'd wanna see both. The wedding pics, can be displayed in places for others to see and u can show the film to people. But if this is a debate over whether u should have both, then I'm all for it as I'm having both. I know it says one box, but i'm indicisive. xx
Video/DVD etc only lasts as long as the technology is widly available.

i am having both at my wedding - dove's point is a good one, but while the technology is there (and not going anywhere any time soon) then why not have both where you can afford them so you have many ways to recapture the moment.
If it were someone elses wedding the photos would be sufficient for me although on saying that my nan died when i was quite young so seeing a video if there had ever been one would have been beautiful to watch to try to get to know her and retain the few memories I have of my grandparents
Best wishes :) xxx

I never actually wanted a professional video up until recently. I was more than happy with somebody using my Dads video camera. But H2B was at a wedding fair with his Mum and they picked up a video cause it was filmed at our venue. They thought I would like to see it all done up. And oh my goodness! I totally fell in love with getting a professional video. There was so much on there that the bride and groom would never see otherwise. Like the suppliers arriving and setting up, each others getting ready, the guests mingling whilst photos are being taken. It was amazing and got me totally hooked.
so i went out and booked him!

At the moment I'm prepared to fork out a bit for an amazing photographer as I am really into photography myself, I want them to be perfect. I do want a video but I'm happy to have a friend or relative film it. I might have to avoid seeing professional videos like you linzi or I'm gonna blow my budget!
CommentAuthorlinzi

Photos everytime as you can hang them on the wall, put them in a photobook, make a cd of them to music etc. I hate my voice and wouldn't want to see me walking and talking. I think it if you can only afford one I would go with photographer everytime and then ask a friend to film it. OK it might not be the best but with a bit of clever editing you can soon produce something that looks half decent.

I would go for video/dvd. Video etc can be formatted into other media and stills can be taken from it and edited. Best of both worlds for greedy me :o) xxx

Hi all,
Just to slightly correct a post above.... video these days is digital. I don't want to bore you with endless technical jargon, but 'digital' simply means it's stored as numbers, albeit on a disc. So wedding videos don't ever deteriorate. Photos in frames can fade. That's why old photos that have been in the sun for years, lose their colour.
Technology will always be with us. Once you have something recorded digitally, in can be transfered anywhere without losing any quality. The same is true of digital photography. If you're worried about your wedding DVD becoming obsolete because you can no longer buy a DVD player, then upgrade to Blu-ray. Sure Blu-ray won't be around forever, but you can then transfer the video to the next latest technology. If all else fails, the internet is one technology that will always be around. Call it, the modern wonder of the world! In years to come, archaologists won't be digging in the ground. They will be scouring the internet because all our lives are on the internet now.
Kind regards,
Andrew. ************

Both, as I'm having both, I too like Linzi saw a professional dvd at a wedding fair and fell in love and knew I had to have one, it maybe £1,295 which I was expecting to spend but I'm really looking forward to being able to watch all the things I won't be there to see in. Also the videographer i'm going for actually does Picture books, which is basically a photo album if you could only afford the one option. We was going to get a smaller photography package but decided we wanted the more expensive one as it looks lovely, I figure I will spending so much money on one day I want loads of memories other than ones in my mind which will fade lol xx
CommentAuthorsuzky123
i dont know. Id prob nick the photies and sneak the video? I think both is a good idea. We were only going to have photographer but then I explained to h2b about ppl who wont be with us much longer and ppl who we think are, something can happen and take them away from us, prime example my dad who died in an accident. Therefore, for sentimental value, I want video too so I can hear them. I had almost forgotten what my dad sounded like until seeing him in a wedding video a few months back so we decided to have both x

I would recommend both Photos because they are good at creating memories. whereas a video records the whole day for you. **************your post has been edited as this is a NO ADVERTISING FORUM, please read our rule thread above****************

i would say video. but i wudnt just want a video of my own wedding because it could break or anything but photos as long as i look after them they will always be there. i stil really want a video tho . xx
CommentAuthorCarillonVideo
Your video could break? I've never heard that one before. :-)
If you're worried about your video breaking, make a backup copy of it. You might have to get permission from your videographer, but that shouldn't be a problem. Worst case scenario - check your videographer keeps a backup. I backup every project I film and I can recreate any wedding film I have ever made, to both DVD and Blu-ray. I don't know any videographers that don't at least keep a backup DVD.
Kind regards,
Andrew

were going for both as 1. im quite into photography myself so love photos and 2. when you watch your video back you may see things that you didnt even know happened on the day (some friends have). many videographers do packages where you can get still prints done too so you have got both! :)
CommentAuthorOfficialMrsField
We are having both, the photographer is only staying until the speeches are over whilst the videographer is staying until after the first dance and will also film guests giving us messages too if they wish, that's something photos can't do. I think using both adds to the magic and memories of the day but in very different ways.x

I would choose photos and have so far only booked a photographer. Because for me I would never watch a video of our wedding. I don't even have time to keep up with soaps. So it would just get dusty in a drawer somewhere, so a complete waste of money I feel. Whereas in comparison I have pictures everywhere and do update them quite regularly.
:-)

im having a photographer and cant afford to also hav a videographer. Luckily tho we found a humanist celebrant to marry us and he films the ceremony and gives u a copy free as long as u give permission for a copy to be used for training purposes. Also got a friend who has a camera and tripod that we will set up in the corner of the evening reception room to film throughout the night xxx
we fit together perfectly. . .like a jigsaw puzzle.

Hi Everyone,
My friend recently got married and she decided to have a video done. I must say i wasn't going to until i saw their one, now i have booked the same people for ours (*************, if you wanted to have a look). she convinced me when she said about having a record of my whole family in one place which rarely happens, and i realised that this is something i would want . And similar to some other posts here, we did not notice them at all. i think she said they do a package with a photographer too.

I like the idea of a photo book, which you can design with your wedding photographer. That way (if you are into photography as we are) the photo montage on each page is your own idea.
A video can get boring if you force people to watch it over and over again - you probably would not get beyond the first minute you see - but a photo book - you can turn to any page you want, to see that part of the day.
Also you can have a few pages of your own photos from your honeymoon in it too.
CommentAuthorFitchMcCombe
Sounds perfect to me nuttynonnie! a friend has offered to video for us and I know that means we'll get a quirky commentary too which should be great fun! I don't personally see the point in spending a fortune for a wedding video you'll only watch once in a blue moon. I'm only going to bring in a pro photographer for an hour or two unless i can find a student whose work looks promising enough, its just so expensive and like linzi said there's a lot of posed photos. we're playing with the idea of the photobooth but thats mostly for fun; we'll have disposables on the tables and then ask people to bring digital cameras and send us copies!

We only had a photographer, I really cant bare to watch or listen to myself on tv!! Hubby wasnt too bothered so we spent a little extra on the photograper and I am over the moon with the outcome :0) I LOVE photos, we have them all over the house, a constant memory in every room lol My eldest son managed to film our 1st dance and me tossing my bouquet on my camera and thats great as I dont spreak lol

Hi all,
This is my 3rd post since I have joined as I am looking for some help with a wedding dress problem, I thought I would offer some help with above as this is something we have sorted! We have hired a very good photographer and like the advice on here we have not gone for the cheapest and but also not paid over the odds either.
We wanted a videographer as well however my friend introduced to me a company that can make your photos into a movie, which looks amazing from the examples I have seen. We are just buying the prints from our photographer and will be making our own photobook but we are not sure which company to use? However we have chosen the company ************** who will create our video for us out of our photos. Hope this helps!

Sounds like promotion to me, just found the website which you helpfully named and it's a scam, just ripping off video slideshow templates from animoto - how do I know? I've just done my own slideshow of our baby photos and getting together using animoto!
