We have booked a registrar to come to our venue to marry us. H2B is catholic and I am protestant, which is why we went for a civil service.

however, we both kinda want a religous service. Anyone know if we can have one at our venue? and how to you find a minister to come and do it for you if we dont go to church?

Is the wedding in Scotland? I think its a case of contacting local ministers.

You could always have the legal wedding done in the civil service and then do a blessing after. That is what we are doing and I know there is someone else who is also doing the same. Their minister is coming out to do it in the same room after the registrar has left. We are lucky that we have a church in the grounds of our country house so we can do both easily.

yep its in Scotland. Have emailed my venue asking them for guidance.

do you have to pay for both the registrar to come out AND a minister?? maybe the cost of it will make the decision for us...

England is different in which a religious wedding has to happen in a place of worship, whereas Scotland theres more freedom in choice.

I think in Scotland we can get married by a minister anywhere. Shaun on the phone to his Catholic church going father to get him to speak to the priest next time he sees him...........

You don't need a registrar if you have a minister and a religious wedding can take place anywhere in Scotland that the celebrant feels is safe and dignified. So it shouldn't be a problem as long as you can find a Minister who's available and willing.

Sorry, posted that just after yours without seeing that you'd said pretty much the same thing.

You would just need to phone round ministers in your local area as some may not be willing to carry out a marriage ceremony in a venue outside their own church (our minister refuses to). Also its a good idea to contact your venue as they may have had a minister who has previously carried out one before there. I know my neice got married at a hotel in Aberdeen last year and she chose to have a minister rather than a registrar so went with the minister recommended by the hotel.

As for cost other than a donation towards the church the minister serves I doubt whether he/she would have a standard charge for doing so but I don't really know for sure. xx

EDITED to say that Emma wasnt charged by the minister who carried out her marriage ceremony.

I think you can ask the minister to come to your venue, and he can marry you their.
But if you ask the registrar to come and the minister you will be expected to pay for both - your looking at another £200 ontop of the registrar price, you also have enough time, if you go now, to get married in a church. (if its not booked already)

the registrar is gonna cost about £350 I think. So might even save money but doing it the way we want and having a religious ceremony. Will wait and see what my venue and FIL2b comes back with........ but we are both really getting ourselves set on the idea now.x

churches varry in price, my church is east ayrshire church and costs us

non member deposit £150 (being a member £100)
    organist £60
    parking attendant £25
church officer £50 (luckily i know the church officer so i am getting this free)

so for £285 i ave a lovely old building to get married in, as i said to get your minister to come to your venue it would be £150 + a call out charge * i think*

just got email from my venue:

No problem at all - I have attached our useful numbers list which has the names of two ministers who will come to Bunchrew to marry you.
You will need to contact them directly and once you have organised things with one of them then please let us know so that we can cancel the registrar. The registrar doesn't need to come to the venue but you still need to complete the legal paperwork and the minister will keep you right with this.

    I just love my venue!

That is so good of them to help you out like that. I think my biggest pet hate about ministers is how they can pick and choose who they marry etc. Who are they to deny anyone the right to marry in front of God if that is what they choose to do? Its the same as how they dictate who can get married in what church. Just because you don't attend every week/month/year doesn't mean that you don't have faith and I think its so wrong of them to do that. Hopefully in your case it looks like things are going to work out so you don't have to worry but others are not so lucky.

got meeting with a minister booked for 13th June! he says his fee is £60 and if we want an organist or keyboard player for the hymns then its another £60.

do we have to have hymns? what other paperwork do we need to sort out and pay for, like the banns, certificates etc?

we are allowed to have the religious outside of churches in Scotland. Its just all the applications for marriage licence and that I am not sure about now. When we had booked the registrar he was gonna sort all that for us.

For applying for your marriage license with a wedding ceremony in Scotland carried about by a minister you would need to collect forms from your local council offices, complete them and one of you needs to go on with the forms and relevant identification and fee for both of you at the earliest of 3 months before your wedding date or at the latest 2 weeks before. You will be interviewed by the registrar at that time and he/she will verify your Id and forms and take payment. You will then get a dated note which will tell you to attend the same offices 1 week before your wedding date to pick up your marriage license which you then give to your minister. Once your wedding is past the minister will give you the completed license for you to return to the council offices asap eg the following Monday from your wedding to get your printed marriage certificate which you then keep forever(any one can hand in the completed marriage license and collect the marriage certificate on your behalf if you are on honeymoon).

    Hope this helps. xx

EDITED to say that the fees are £30 each as stated on my local council website online.

thanks June! I think that means the only charge we will have is £60 for the minister, and then £28 each for the application for marriage licence. How cheap is that! lol

oh, and suppose the minister will stay for dinner............

We invited out minister to our wedding but only cause we know him pretty well but there is no set rule that you have to invite him/her. Great news about the saving from changing to a minister rather than sticking with the registrar, it also means you will be allowed to have hymns in your ceremony also if you wish.

we would rather not have hymns. Will ask the minister when we meet him, just hope he wont be offended! I hate it at weddings when people dont sing and your left with just a room full of awful squeaks through the song. I'd laugh too much. None of my lot are church goers so the songs would be a struggle

You dont need to have them and I am sure your minister will understand, I have been to both a wedding ceremony in a hotel carried out by a minister and no hymns were included and also one with hymns so it is flexible in that respect.

Hope you manage to get everything sorted out soon, good luck Linzi. xx
