I'm one of those people who gets really over excited when I see something I like and impulse buy however with wedding stuff I'm trying to be sensible. My H2b says its too early to buy anything for the wedding (a year and 7 months) but I don't think it is, I'd just like a bit of advise on when a good time is to buy the important things like my dress, the flowers (silk), bridesmaids dresses and all the rest of it as I really don't have a clue!

Hi, and congratulations on the wedding day!! As im sure other posts and other brides will agree, its never too early! if you find the ONE you want (in whatever you are looking for) then you go for it. Some brides have bought their dresses a year in advance!!
Advise wise, dress should be ordered at least 9-12 months before as can take a good 6 months to make etc & depending what time of year it is for making time frame, then need at least 3months before for fittings / alterations.

Venues, Photographer, etc you should be looking at in the next few months and booking sooner rather than later - maybe not just yet - but again depends what time of year you are planning on marrying as can determine how far in advance to book. They get booked up a good 9-12 months in advance as well so need to start researching. We booked our venue in June for May next year, and when we put deposit down they'd had another 3 enquiries for same day so can build up, but May is a very busy wedding month!
Same for photographer, we booked 2 weeks ago but that was after 4 others were unable to do our date.

I've just recently started researching for flowers and cake. One florist said when you know what you want and have found the florist you want then why wait, if you don't know what you want then yes wait but once you know you may as well book and get it ticked off!
I've started enquiring about stationery too - im not arty/crafty enough to do my own, and I emailed someone yesterday who's fully booked right up till march already!

Then again, some people on here are doing theirs under 8 or 6 months so I guess anytime really.
My OH reckons it can all be done with 1 month to go, so sometimes men aren't the best for advice really!

Not sure if any of that helps, but see what other B2B say too! xx

    Hiya,

I bought my wedding dress in April 2011 and we get married on 29 Sept. WE then started looking into bits and bats and venues etc.

I found it (almost!) stress free taking our time over it all!

I bought my dress nearly 3 years in advance; had it for 10 months now, wedding is 23 months away, and I don't regret it. I went to a designer dress sale just out of interest, to see what would be available (I wanted a designer dress, and ones I liked were in the £1800-3000 range, but I didn't want to spend more than £1300-ish), with no intentions of buying, but I saw one I loved, and bought it. I don't regret it, because I've looked since, and realised I am VERY fussy. I also got a £2500 dress for £1000 (plus alterations).

I also have my shoes; I bought both pairs (one pair of Ginas and one pair of Jimmy Choos) nearly as soon as we got engaged lol; I'd wanted the Gina's forever, and also fell in love with the JCs. Also don't regret that at all (only downside with both my dress and shoes is I keep wanting to try them on lol)

We also booked the venue over 3 years in advance.

Everything else we're doing 12-18 months in advance. I've liked being able to book things early, as I don't feel at all stressed or rushed, and can take my time. I think things like flowers, the cake, the photographer etc should probably be at least researched 18 months out, as they can get booked up, and you might have less choice if you leave it too late eg we're very fussy about the photographer and would hate to leave it too late and not get the one we want.

1 year 7 months is not a long time at all; I intend to have most major things booked by then :-)

Never too early. Things like BM dresses I would wait til closer because people change shape and size but stuff like silk flowers, venue, photographer you might as well get done now. Saves stressing about it closer to the date.

Well basically i started planning our wedding when we got back from holiday june 2011.At this early stage we had booked the venue, photographer and i started looking at dresses and i found the one. then about sept 2011 we started looking at wedding cars (our wedding is aug 2013) but the car place said the were booked til may 2014!!!!!! so no its never too early. Like other brides have said 1 year 7 months is not too early i had everything done by then and booked the florist then too

we set our date 18 months ago and we decided to get everything booked as we could save money by getting fixed prices, we decided not to buy anything else until 15 months to go but that was only my dress etc. I really started buying centre pieces etc with 12 months to go so that i was spreading the costs

Me and H2B booked our venue with 10 months to go, I now have my dress, jewellery and bridesmaids jewellery. But we're moving at the end of October so we're not buying things till after we move (with 5 months to go) so nothing gets damaged in transit. My mum has gone a bit shopping crazy as well and bought loads of things for decorations and centre pieces lol x x

Thank you everyone :):) Got my venue booked and meeting with one photographer I like but now have a much better Idea of when I'm going to do things, I'm also going to but one little thing per month (cake topper, guest book ect) and hopefully have it all sorted and can have a few months before the wedding doing nothing :):)

The sooner you can start the better really, just for financial reasons. Its a brill idea doing one thing a month, it will spread the cost out. We took 2 years to do it all, and that was just right. Meant I had smaller bridezilla fits!! xxx

It's never ever too early. We booked everything 3 years in advance. It's been easier to pay off monthly that way. As regards to my dress, I have had mine bought, paid for and stored in my mams house since last April...18 months before my big day. I just took it back to be altered.

    Get booking!xx

I would like to get the bridesmaids dresses made now but two of them are planning on losing weight, so that won't be sorted until January (9 months prior). Apart from that there's nothing wrong ordering and buying things now :) my only concern would be what if you find something better later on. But then getting most of it bought well in advance means you don't have to worry about it later on.

No you aren't overly excited, it's just that your timeline doesn't quite match your excitement. I always knew I was going to have a long engagement so when I first got engaged I made up a wedding date and looked at dresses out of my area in order to get it out of my system. A bit naughty I know but it worked - for awhile ;)

It's never to early to buy things. It will also help you to see how your theme/colour scheme will come together. Plus if you change your mind, you can always sell something on the well known auction site.
