So I'm off to a cake lady tomorrow morning! how exciting, finally doing something wedding related with the OH for the first time in forever!!!
We love her website and portfolio, and her flavours list is just calling out to be drooled at!! Her prices, well, they aren't the cheapest, but they aren't the most expensive. We are after something simple with the design as ribbon rather than edible design, and know this will allow for a lower price anyway...

Have some ideas in album if anyone wants to have a nose... and any ideas happily throw them this way!

What I want to know from you ladies is, how many people did you go and see? Did you decide on the first one before you met them or what was it? Other than the tasting of course, what made you decide on that person?

I know many of you have had it made through a relative, I can make cakes & I would make my own as that is ALOT cheaper however I wouldn't have patience or confidence or enough stress in the world to cope 2 days before my big day... and noone else in my family does that...

    xx

We looked at a few local online, but couldn't quite get 'the one' (nothing jumped out at us). We had a day out in Blackpool though, and passed by a really good coffee shop and confectioners - and both of us fell in love with one cake in the window.

My parents offered to buy it for us, and in the end they got a good deal as by the time we ordered a few months later, the shop was celebrating its 5th birthday and giving discount on everything!!!

I was going to make it myself then my mum said that my second cousin makes them for a living so she's making it for me at family rates and my mums paying for it, so should be all good

The most important thing for us when it comes to the cake is taste; we do want it to look nice, but will probably go with something fairly plain, with a large ribbon and brooch to set it off (much cheaper that way too lol). So, while obviously we want someone who's skilled, we don't need someone who does really intricate designs.

We'll probably short-list half a dozen based on their websites/portfolios, and try to go and see them all in one day/weekend to taste. We will then make our choice based on taste. If none of the ones we shortlist are up to scratch in terms of taste, we'll keep hunting until we find someone who is :-)

We saw several at wedding fairs so got a rough idea of prices from several people and a few samples. We only actually went for a proper tasting with one as my OH didn't want to 'disappoint people' by going for tastings and then not getting their cakes. I think from the samples we had from other places we would have gone to our one anyway, to us taste is more important than getting the cheapest price but the prices are reasonable too.

Lula I love the black and white cake in your album and also the one with blue ribbon and diamanté bit in the middle!
My step dads mum has offered to make our cake as a wedding present - they did the same when my mum and step dad got married and everyone loved it! X

    Thanks ladies!

The main thing for us is taste really! Detail is nice but I love ribbon detail anyway and it's so much cheaper anyway! But will see what she comes up with - we've spoken through a few emails and got a good impression from that alone!
Same happened with venue & photographer, got the feeling just from email & 'tone' of it etc! Will see what comes from it though, wont make any rash decisions & obviously flavour & taste is most important!

Eek! One more thing close to ticking off!! Once cake sorted then onto flowers! Got a couple of places lined up to visit, having artificial & found really good price from one place that is standing out but obviously new to visit!
    Cake first though!! Xx

UPDATE - Went to see her today, we weren't sure what to make of her at first, didn't realise she ran the business from her home - that wasn't the problem, but it was more the ideas we were suggesting she kept saying no too, but after a while we understood why and came up with some absolutely fab ideas, totally different and unique!!
I know that it should be something we want and what we like but she know's what she is doing and we did see sense out of what she was saying!! Also loved how bubbly and into our type of thinking she was, no awkwardness or looks like 'what on earth are you two going on about, what planet are you from?' sort of thing... she was definitely on the same weird and wonderful wave length as us!!!

I don't know if its lucky or not but no cake tasting happened :( she's holding a cake tasting event in a couple of weeks so we will go along to that but in all honesty, if it tastes as good as how we felt when we left her today, then think she's booked!

Also started talking about sweet buffets, dessert tables, favours, all the extras... surprised I managed to walk out in one piece, got my taste buds going haywire!! Puddle of drool and all haha, TMI i know!!
But some of the flavours of her cakes : Sticky Toffee & Vanilla, Jaffa Cake, Cocunut & Lime, Almond & Amaretto & Espresso, ChocaMocha, Orange Drizzle, Lemon Drizzle, to name but a few of the more unusual flavours!!

Eek, progress may have been made... lets just say the cake is definitely not going to be simple or classic or traditional!!! xx

    Ill keep you informed, hehe!!

Definitely going for sticky toffee & vanilla, if and when we like the taste, that'll more than likely be the biggest tier just got to work on the other 2 flavours!! xx
