So, I was all set on the idea of cupcakes for the wedding and I was happily telling everyone why I thought it was a good idea and how that when my friend had them it was great and they all got eaten... but suddenly... just like over night... i feel like i've totally gone off the idea! Now I don't know what to do or what I want?

How did you all decide on what to do about a cake?

Help! Inspiration needed! I'm having a summery pastels theme with mixed coloured bridesmaids dresses and a generally relaxed feel - so i feel like a very formal white traditional cake won't be right but i've not got enough imagination to think of something different. And i don't want a cheese cake.

    What to do???

    How about something like this:

    or

I think this kind of thing can look so cute and it would tie in with your informal theme too. The flowers can be done in all colours you're including in the wedding and you could easily have several tiers for either one of these.

they're really pretty - and, if you didn't fancy making them you self then you can buy the plain cakes and just make the flowers - they look pretty easy...

if you have not gone completely off the idea of cupcakes you could do a top tier cake with cupcakes below it following the same theme, it means you get the nest of both : )

What about individual cakes they look so cute and are the next step up from cupcakes, you can have a large one for you and h2b to cut into and have for the top table and all the smaller ones can be decorated the same as the top tier heres some examples

What about a small cutting cake and then some traditional high tea party type cakes...like battenbergs, fondant fancies, jam and cream scones, vanilla slices etc.

I did both. I had a normal traditional three tiered cake but then for the evening brought out cupcakes too so that way since I couldnt decide I had the best of both worlds.

Thanks for all the cake ideas ladies, but I Just can't seem to find any enthusiasm at all for any cake at the mo, it's like I've totally lost interest in all things cake related!?! Has any one, or is any one having anything totally different, a totally none wedding cake?

I Just know I don't want some thing formal, I don't want a white standard cake, unfortunately I also don't have a huge amount to spend on it, and I'm hopeless at baking. I know it's stupid to get in a tizzy about cakes but I Just feel like shouting "I'm not having a beeping cake"! I don't know what's come over me.

Maybe leave the cake for a bit and wait for inspiration to strike?

I go through phases where I get all 'meh' about certain aspects of the wedding. It happened to me with centrepieces. I got my mojo back with it a few weeks ago, and now they're sorted and I love them!

At the minute I'm trying to work up enthusiasm for invites...I did want to get the day ones out just after christmas but whenever I think about it I'm like, nah, let's look at buffet options instead.

At this rate I'll have fantastic food but no one will be there to eat it! Xx

my friend literally went to M*c*ro or the other big warehouse store and literally just brought a load of really nice different cakes and did an afternoon tea rather than have an actual wedding cake. Everyone loved them and went back for seconds and it was really nice. Relaxing and not formal and everyone could have a good natter over cake and tea

My cousin had a massive pyramid of profiteroles covered in chocolate syrup, i haven't got a picture but if you google 'profiterole tower wedding cake' you will see.I thought it was very different. Before i decided on a traditional 3 tier wedding cake i really wanted a 'chocnoc pyramid' which is basically chocolate cornflake cakes piled up but instead of chocolate you use a gooey chocolate syrup to stick the cornflakes together.Trust me it tastes delicious BUT its incredibley sticky and i had to think of my dress lol! xxx

You still have time to sort a cake, why dont you leave it for a few weeks and then go back to the drawing board? I did and now instead of spending £450 on a three tier cake made from sponge with a couple of blue dotted flowers and ribbon, Im getting a 2 tier fruit cake made by one nan and decorated by another nan :) feel much happier and glad I never went to order x

You have plenty of time to decide on a cake... My OH originally wanted cupcakes for the cake with a smaller one on top to cut, but then we have decided instead of a sweet/candy buffet we're going to do an assortment or 'desserts' table where there will be plenty of sweets plus cupcakes/brownies/cookies etc... so he still gets his cupcakes!
The idea of the mini cakes on the cake stand is really nice and elegant btw! Love it! and they arent that hard to do, can either make a huge sponge and get a mini circular ramekin type thing to cut out or you can go on to bay of e or the rainforest and find a baking tray with 16 mini xmas cake style ramekins already on there and make individual ones that way...

But as natalie has said, why don't you leave it for a few days/weeks and then go back to the drawing board? We had an idea of what we wanted, pretty much had it set in stone, went to see a lady who basically told us it wasnt going to happen and do this, or this or this, completely different to what we originally wanted and at first loved her new idea and even posted on here asking for peoples opinions and what they thought etc... but then the following week was sitting with my mom and going through a cake mag and thought no we don't like it and don't like the way she talked us out of what we want for our special day and as a result my OH and I came up with a brand new design that we now definitely want and just need to find someone to make it for us!

Its all about you two on the day and what you want so definitely sit back relax and come back to the drawing board when your minds afresh! xx

I wanted cupcakes because they're cheap, tasty, and individual ie don't involve messing about with cutting etc.

My mum and OH wanted a tiered cake though, so, we're having a 4-tier cake, with different flavours for each tier. And I have to say, the ones we've been looking at are beautiful, so, I'm happy :-)

I think both are nice, for different reasons; is there anyway you could get a cheap traditional cake, then make cupcakes yourself and have a bit of both? You can never have too much cake! lol
