I have been thinking about instead of paying for a videographer, of buying a HD camcorder and leaving in my friends hands to video as much as possible , he did media at college and uni and filmed some stuff as part of it, and asking him If he would edit it together for us. He is t-total so know it will be in safe hands and only cost £2-300 as opposed to £4-500 and we get to keep the camera forever.
Does this sound like a good idea, I really want the event videoed as I have memorys of watching an rewatching one of my aunts wedding as a kid, and it will capture the speeches and first dance and that look of when the groom first gets a look of his bride and she of him.

I was thinking the exact same thing Lana2BMrsHands, I was considering buying a HD camcorder and asking someone we trusted to video things for us as its something I would love but our budget wouldn't stretch too, so if you have a trusted friend who could do it at cost price then go for it :)

I think its a good idea as long as your friend has continued to practice filming things since... or has time to get some practice in now. I studied film production at uni and although there are a few people from my course coming to the wedding, the only one I am trusting to film the wedding is the one who consistently got good marks and is now working in a tv studio. The others I'll be asking to film people around the venue and take some stills. Camera wise I would recommend getting one that allows full manual control - allowing your friend to white-balance at the very least as no one wants to look back on a turquoise wedding dress that was meant to be white.

We have done similar to you. Our close friend is a photographer so is doing our photos. His professional camera also records in HD 1080p so he'll record some too. My DSLR also records in HD but we'll let him use his. My sister has said she'll be David Bailey for the day with my camera too! Xx
Getting a videographer is just not an option for us financially. We already have the camcorder and I am going to ask my Grandad to film it for us. If it doesnt turn out perfect (which it wont), I wont mind at all, because it will be better than nothing. Plus those little moments where the person filming it is experimenting with the zoom and accidently films someones nostril for a couple of minutes make the video quirky, i think. As long as it's not during the all important I dos...

So true Sarah Jane, my aunts wedding vid which was recorded back in the early 90's which bits are out of focus and zooms in to much etc and my uncle babbling along about who that is etc makes it more personal, he even caught when the photos were being taken my gran hat being blown off , its hillarious!
