I am just starting to look at dresses and I am so new to it all. What's a bustle? Is that something to do with the thing that goes on your wrist to hold it up? Do you wear that all day or is it later at night?

Train - that's the longer bit at the back, right? Some have them but not all?

Can you have a bustle AND a train?

God I'm so embarrassed LOL x

Hey hun, the train is the material that splays out behind you when you walk and can be really long which is cathedral length or shorter which is 'puddle' or something :) Yup some dresses, have no train so its really up to personal preference hun.
A bustle is when you pin your train up on a hidden hook near the bum on your dress and then the train is up out of the way when you are moving about and dancing etc xx

    Hopefully that helps a bit?

I'm not a fan of trains myself. They look lovely down but look horrible up so I opted to have my dress made without a train! I do have a floor length veil instead though :)

My bustle is different to the above photo. In the photo above the dress is hooked up on the outside of the dress, this is nice for dresses with a detailed back, which you might want to keep on show. my bustle is hooked up much the same, but on the inside.....so all the bunching is hidden..this is perfect for a dress which is plain at the back. it also makes it look like a dress without a train at all. I think if I decided not to wear the train for some reason, on the morning of the wedding, it could be busltled and no-one would ever know it ever had a train......handy if it chucked it down with rain.

i really love how yours is bustled Anne my dress has quite a plain back and i was worried that a bustle would just make my bum look bigger and do nothing for the dress, my train is long like on your dress. Did you bustle the dress yourself? Is it a lot more work for a seamstress to do? x

I have big train on mine and I am hoping not to have a bustle as there is so much detail on the train itsself. Can see it in my album. Plus I have always wanted a big train.

i didnt like the idea of having my dress bustled as someone said it dont look as nice but on the night my train kept getting trod on and it was getting stuck everywhere i might add my dress was huge, but i did want to hook it up though as i couldnt move freely but when i wanted to do this i couldnt as the silly seemstress from the bridal shop forgot to put anything on dress to hook it up with but would of loved to have hooked it up xx

i had a bustle, it was so handy on the night as people kept standing on my train. however i couldn't undo it myself.. so on our first dance i got rushed to the dance floor and half of it had come down and the other hadnt cause i couldnt find my mum... so the top layer was on the floor and looked a mess :(

but its a brilliant idea.. you get the stunning look of your train at the back, and the practicality of the bustle for the night

    xx

natasha, I did mine myself, I sewed ribbons inside, in strategic places......its not a big job for a seamstress to do, but its a costly job. I dont know WHY they charge the earth for doing this because it really doesnt take long to do.

A lot of seamstresses, if you ask them to do a bustle they will just do the bare minimum......the one hook to hang it onto a button at the back, and for some dresses this is fine, like chiffon that doesnt weigh much, but I prefer the french bustle, underneath, and that apparently costs more for a seamstress to do.

As I did it myself, I can go back into it and do a Picture Tutorial if you like, but that wont be until Monday......

£5 each? that doesnt sound bad, but my dress is having 9 points, so would that mean 9 times £5? if so I think thats expensive.

I think I'll get a bustle for my train (always wanted a killer train as they look amazing) but also a hook so I can hold it on my wrist if I decide on the day I don't want the bustle. Don't think it costs much to do both xx

if its only a ribbon handle to hold it with, then that would be easy to do your self? all you need is about 18 inches of half-inch ribbon.
