I'm really stuck on the money. I don't know how much we'll be able to save up but it seems like we'll be waiting years to get a reasonable amount, we both have low paid jobs and I'm the only one who's been saving up so so far our fund is about £50. I'm really stressing about it, starting to wish we could just elope but my family would freak out completely. Any tips for saving would be great!

We went from saving for a house deposit to saving for the wedding within a matter of weeks so I can highly recommend setting out a spreadsheet of monthly bills etc so you can see where you can cut back and how much you can realistically save :) have to be quite strict, my downfall is coffees when out and about, it soon adds up!

We've got 3/4 money tins that cant be openned unless its with a tin openner - one is for coppers (every little helps!(, one is for silvers, one if for £1 and £2 coins only and the other one is notes. Its makes it an awful lot easier knowing that it cant be openned - once it goes in theres no getting it out other OH would kill me and vice versa lol!! Its only been going since March and the £2 coin one and the note one is more or less full - i'm not really noticing any lack of money either - like you MrsK2b i'm really bad for coffees! xx

Weve been engaged 5 year and want to be married before the kids start nursery etc so we decided nxt yr... to do i so quick(ok its not quick to some bt is on 1 wage) has been hard.. we r saving like mad lol we worked out what we can realisticly afford weekly/mnthly to put aside and we are not going over our buget even by a penny lol we piced everything up befre setting a proper budget also and once we had deposit money we booked things which secured 2014 prices which is cheaper than 15 :-)

U need to look about and get a rough idea of total costs of what u want and need. What u dont need and what u can do without and then work from there xx

I think you just need to be strict! We don't have much disposable income on a monthly basis but it is thinks like coffees, snacks when you are out and about and things like takeaways which probably take up a lot more money than you think. Save all the spare change you can and hopefully it will all start adding up :)

My OH is in a job where he gets tips so all of his tips are going straight in our wedding save fund. We are also going to put the majority of birthday and christmas money we get given straight into the wedding fund as well. We don't neeeeeed anything really for ourselves - will be money better spent on the wedding rather than on things we don't really need

I had a standing order set up so on payday each month a set amount would be transferred into a savings account. I had to dip into the savings when my car played up but otherwise it generally worked out.

I would definitely use those tins that you can't open like Kayleigh said. I've saved about £700 in two tins since February.oH also puts at least £200 into the savings account for the wedding a month from each pay and whatever he's got left at the end of the month he adds to the next £200 (he likes emergency money during the month or would put more in at the start)

We tend to not really have many takeaways and I'm not one for snacking so those shouldn't be a problem. I'll look into money jars, we just have an old box for coppers right now and I think there's about 30p in there. Books are my big fall down, I can't get enough and seem to have worked my way through the library lol. We'll have a look on Friday (payday, woo!) and see how much we can realistically set aside. Thanks everyone, was having a bit of a freak out before!

Tasha if it means u cnt get married for a few year at least youll get the wedding u want with saving rather than making do just to make the wedding happen sooner :-)

Once u get started tho ull find its relativly easy and once u start booking everything falls into place

Like i said if u do a bit shopping about and prebook people sooner rather than later with deposits they honour prices quotes(wheb u get em in writting) ive only found the people who wont do that is church lol which i think is wrong but nevermind its only going to be a max of 25quid more i think (it onky went up 17 from last yr ro thid yr so cant see being a big jump) x

Ull enjoy it once u get passed this stage! Budget stage is the worst lol xx

We are only on one wage at the moment (I'm in my last year at uni so student loans for me :P) and we have a set budget each week for our shopping. Whenever we come under budget for the week, that bit extra goes into our wedding account. It might not add up to much but it does help!

I also think the tins that you can't open are a great idea, I'm going to have to look into them myself x

Ladies, savings accounts are better than those savings tins or jars, you get interest if it's in the bank.

Set up a spreadsheet and also look at your weekly grocery shop to see what is not really necessary that you can cut back on. Also, give meals out, coffees out and takeaways a miss. If you can walk or cycle instead of using the car or bus could help too.

    Good luck.

I agree with indreamland, savings accounts are much better as you earn interest. As soon as we got engaged we opened a savings account where you earned about 6% interest a month for one year and managed to save over £3000 - better interest for aan account where you can't take it out for a year. Then transferred it over to an online savings account where we can access it to pay deposits etc. Again chose a better type so that the months we don't take money out we get bonus interest.

We got so use to a certain amount going out of our bank each month into the year saver that now we no longer do this we find we have money left over every month as we got used to being smart with money. Have a good look at what things are out there to make the most out of what you save and then keep your copper tin for a little extra.

I find I spend less when I buy my groceries online as it's easier to keep a track of how much I'm spending and then take out the things that are not necessities. It's also easier to find cheaper options online. Then I go to the supermarket to get reduced to clear bread and other bits that work out cheaper. Bread goes in the freezer if we're not going to eat it all before the BB date.

I got an 800g loaf of W@rburt0n5 still with 2 days left on it for 39p this morning! From W@1tr053! I get a 4 pint bottle of milk for £1 with a My W@1tr053 card (which is free), if you spend over £10 at the weekend (£5 during the week) you get a newspaper free so I always get hubbys Saturday paper (worth £2) for free.

My OH and I have a joint savings account which we pay into every month. Every month I know exactly how much I can AFFORD to put in and anything on top of that is extra if I have it but we don't save to the point where we can't afford to visit family or have a meal out, cinema etc We keep track of wedding budget and savings on a spreadsheet as well.

We have an ISA which is being used as our wedding fund at the mo. All coins and notes go into a big bottle and we empty it every now and then and put it into the ISA. Should probably look at transferring it to a different account as the interest rate is rubbish now.

Also, I have an account on LINK REMOVED which is a site that gives you cash back for things like switching utility providers, taking out different types of insurance, phone contracts, just shopping online in general.. It takes quite a while to pay out but once the cash back does get paid out that's a little bit extra you can put in the savings. You need things like insurance anyway so it's ace that you can get cash back on it :) if you haven't already I would def check it out x

and with dreaded christmas creeping up you will have to be strict, im definatly cutting back on the amount of food i buy for christmas and chocolates, ive also told the kids santa is focusing on the less off children this year and explained to family that we are just focusing on all the kids this year and not so much adults. its all going to help. also as family know we have the wedding we are saving for they may just do vouchers/money for christmas which i would be greatful for. then i have my birthday in jaunuary. we are just on one wage at the moment and have budgeted weekly we take £50 a week out my h2b wage and put it in a seperate account. any extra I have at the end of the week after ive sorted the bills i put away aswell. we have managed to keep all our costs down by asking my brother to drive me and my dad to the church. i really wanted him involved and its saved us loads. ive also asked a local baker to do my cake and cup cakes so its costing me £60 in total and ive had her cakes before they are yummy. Hope you manage to start your savings soon
