Have you considered ringing venues and asking for late availability deals?
A lot of venues offer steep discounts for late bookings and often turn them into 'packages' so that the cost covers your DJ and flowers etc.
Whether it's suitable for you kind of depends on how reactive your friends/family will be to it and how important it is to you that everyone can make it - if you think a lot of your guests would be fine with 4 or 5 months notice then i'd suggest getting all the rest of the stuff like your dress/invites etc prepped ready to go then start to look for late availability about 6 months before you want your wedding.
