In my opinion... If you say they must have something, like a certain bag or pair of shoes or dress, you, the bride should pay. If you don't mind, leave them to sort their own.

    If they offer, its different.

They all work and have good jobs and they know my budget is tight ....
I don't want to ask them really ....

my bridesmaids are paying for their own outfits, including shoes etc. But I don't generally mind what they wear, the only input i have had is on the corsets, if you want to dictate their whole outfit then i would say bride pays as it's only fair, my only stipulation was that their outfits had to match at least partly. x

My Bm's have paid for thier dresses. I asked them all up front whether they would be prepared to do this and they all said yes! It has really helped with costs. I have bought thier tiaras and jewellery. They all have dresses in the same claret as my dress from the same designer but they were all pre-loved from bay of e. They are all buying thier own shoes and handbags in silver as I want them to be comfortable and buy shoes they can wear again. I think it is fine if they can afford it or go halves like Halloween Bride! My suggestion would be to have the conversation and see what they say! xx

As mentioned I am on a tight budget and my 2 girls are been bridesmaids, so i already have the cost of two of them!!
I think I will ask because obviously they are my good friends and I know they will understand!
Even if they pay half for the dress and I buy all the extras I will have saved!! x

i said that i would pay for my bridesmaid dress dependin on price... i managed to get one off ebay for really cheap, she bought her own shoes and i said as long as they go with the dress get anyones she wants so she will want to wear them again. i paid for flowergirl and all her accesories cos she is too young to be made to pay lol.
I think if you set a price and if they want something more expensive make them pay the rest xx

i am buying mine, but i only have one adult and 1 child to buy for. plus i am choosing the colour and accessories. There are lots of people who do buy them and then sell them afterwards on ebay or local ads. if you are on a tight budget i would have a look on ebay, there are some great ones on there and they do go for next to nothing, just check the sizes with the seller to make sure they fit and go for the dry cleaned ones (it can cost you as much as £50 per dress). i'm sure they'll not mind you asking or even try dropping some hints, good luck with your wedding x

I am buying my girls dresses, flowers, shoes and jewellery. I think its actually a bit cheeky to ask them to be a bridesmaid, then ask them to fork out lots of money for dresses and shoes and stuff. Especially as they will also be buying you a wedding present too. However to save a bit of money, I am going to present them their jewellery in a little keepsake box, and that will double up as their thank you present!!!
Only 2 of my 3 bridesmaids have offered to pay anyway......

I've really just thought all along they would pay towards.... only recently have i considered they wouldnt!
My thought was that they would have to buy a new dress anyway!
I'm having 3 adult b/maids and my 2 daughters as flower girls. I have looked on ebay but cant seem to see any i like!
I'll keep on looking and have a 'meeting' with the b/maids to see what they think!

i didnt even think about BMs paying for their own stuff, im getting married in sept 2011 and am only kinda researching my budget atm, and having 5 BMs is so far gonna cost me a fortune, i am (so far) paying for dresses, shoes, accessories, hair, make-up and nails!
so is it the norm for BMs to contribute towards their own outfits? i just assumed as they were attending my wedding and doing me the honour of being my BMs that i would foot the whole bill! xXx

It looks like I'll be having 7 bridesmaids - I don't want any of my girls to miss out!! I want them all in the same dress, so I'll be footing the bill, however I'm not buying specific bridesmaid dresses as I want them to be able to wear them again! I've looked on websites and in magazines and there are some gorgeous dresses for like £30!! So this is the road I'm heading down! However, I will ask them to buy their own shoes so they can all stamp their own individuality on the outfit and all be comfortable (or if they're not then it's their own fault!). I probably won't be paying for any hair and make-up either, but I am planning on making them each a bracelet to wear and as a thank-you!

I think if you ask someone to be bridesmaid you should expect to pay for their dresses. I think it's acceptable for them to buy their own shoes & accessories. If they offer to pay then that's different. I'm bridesmaid to my sister in Sept & I offered to buy my dress as like you I thought well I'd be buying a new dress anyway (although not as expensive) but she declined my offer & is buying them. Having said that I'm having 4 bridesmaid & my 2 daughters as flower girls so wouldn't mind them offering to pay! Lol! X
