Just thought I'd share. I had it all worked out how I was going to ask the people I wanted to be my bridesmaid if they would as I thought our engagement party would be a great place as everyone talks about the wedding and it wouldn't just be a random questions on a day.
I got a text in the morning from one of the people I was planning on asking saying that she was ill and couldn't come which was fair enough but it has put me in a bit of a dilemma as now I don't know when to ask her.
Also ; with all the organising and set up e.t.c; I forgot the cards I'd made to ask them...
I wanted to ask Heather (the other one of my bridemaids) all night but I could never get a moment when it was just me and her as my other two friends were always with her (we can't afford to ask them to; we choose Heather as she is like a non-blood sister to me). At the end of the night; my h2b told me to bite the bullet so we grabbed her as she was leaving; I felt a bit rude askng to talk to her alone and ask for the other friends to wait in the car.
So I asked her and she couldn't believe it and kept asking me if I was sure and even asked h2b if he didn't mind :P I thought she was going to burst into tears on me as her eyes were watering but she said yes and gave me a hug so one down; one to go.
Hopefully then it will be my sister;Heather and Vicky as bridesmaid if Vicky says yes :)

Well actually, I text them all saying we were engaged and all of them text back saying something along the lines of 'Yay! Can't wait to be a bridesmaid!' lol; luckily they assumed right ;-)
OP: that's really sweet how happy she was :-) I sometimes think my bridesmaids are more excited than we are lol

I asked all mine (bar one as she lives in Brum) face to face. They had to keep it a secret until all had been asked which some found tougher than others and was surprised they managed it as I have 6 BM's.
It's weird isn't it how people react to being asked. I had some that cried some that were just VERY VERY excited and others that as you have said just asked if I was sure lol!

Closer to the time they'll get proper invitations, as will the flower girls and page boys.
Thought i'd prepare them, see how they act before i put it down in writing and make it official for them to tell there friends.

Mine didn't seem to react in anyway shape or form but all have been very good and enthusiastic and matter of fact... just easy going! I don't need any divas or people that are over dramatic as that's my mother's job! ;)

my MOH was the second person i rang after getting engaged - after i rang my mom of course - everyone else was already there when i got engaged as it was at a family meal at the place where my dad and step mom got married. i had no idea people worry when or how to ask them i just did it cus i was excited! i dont think my bridesmaids reacted much - my MOH was excited though as she is my best friend but also H2B's cousin so we will kind of be cousins lol x

I can't remember how I asked my MoH but I asked my SIL's when they got back from school/Uni and they seemed really happy about it. When I asked my five-year-old cousin on Boxing Day she said 'Yeah!' really enthusiastically but had to ask her mum what a bridesmaid was, even though she has been one before. Bless her!

I asked my 5 year old sister to be my bridesmaid and she had a big smile on her face but later on she was pretty unhappy as that meant that she couldn't marry 'her Shaunie' any more lol! x

I asked my h2bs sis the night we got engaged and my cousin a few weeks later, i never had to ask my sister as it was automatically her position as moh x
