well my nightmare continues. After buying 3 dresses and finding out the size 22 didnt even nearly fit my size 22 bridesmaid I decided just to sod it and buy 3 dresses from a bridal shop. I needed a size 10, 16 and a 24. So the girl in the shop tells me she has 2 in the sale, a size 10 and a size 22 that can either be made smaller to fit my size 16 or bigger to fit my 24, then I would only need to order another at full price. Great i though. 3 dresses = total cost of £330. (way more than I wanted to spend).
BUT what I actually got was a size 6 and a size 22 and another one ordered. The girl promised me that she is a size 18 and the 22 fitted her perfectly. I'm a size 14-16 at the mo and it swamps me. She also promised that her size 12 sister fits perfectly into the size 6 dress as its "big made".
Tonight i got my SIL2B to come round, who is a size 8 and the dress will not even do up on her!!!
SO - do any of you know if dresses can be altered that much? They are Alexia Designs and i need the size 6 taken out a good 4 inches or so I think, and the size 22 taken in about 6 inches!!!
what do I do?!?!?! the sale dresses were sold as seen, and my sister who picked them up signed an order form accepting those terms. The receipt says size 6 on it too but she didnt notice.

First of all I'd take them back to the shop and see what they say. I think most places would want to protect their reputation and so try and keep you happy. Tell the manager what the salesperson told you. Some dresses are 'big made' but I've never come across a dress that is a size 6 and fits someone size 12!
Altering them could be an option but I think it depends on the style. As far as I know, it's fairly straightforward to go up or down a size but any more than that and you loose the shape.
I hope it works out ok for you!

If she said it was a size 10 then she has miss sold you a dress. I would go back to the shop and talk to them.

thanks MrsW unfortunately it was the manager I spoke to on the phone when I realised i was given a size 6. She was the one that assured me the sizes would be ok. Her order form also states on the back "its not company policy to take out a dress that is too small, or to take a dress in that is too big by more than 1 size". I asked her about this and she said they just put that on the form to protect themselves from Brides ordering dresses that are way too small for them.
I think I might take them to the woman i want to do the alterations on my dress tomorrow. Maybe the extra material from the big one could be used on the tiny one? The dresses are boned internally too so I cant see how much spare fabric there is on the seams.
getting their dresses is more stressful than getting my own!!!!! and I still have to try and sell my other 3 dresses that i bought originally

Oh gosh - nightmare! I had a similar problem where my bridesmaid told me her size - brought the dresses in the sale; she came and tried it on 3 months later - didn't fit by 4 inches; had to sell all on ebay as had gone over 28 day exchange and lost loads of money - not impressed!! Hope you get it sorted hon - I'm sure the shop are liable in this instance x
been speaking to H2B. And thought about changing the dresses at the back so they are lace up instead of zip up. That way all the alterations can be made at the back instead of the sides, if its possible at all. Its gonna cost a fortune for alterations, but I am past the point of caring. I just want these bloody dresses to fit!!! The ordered one wont be ready until next May but its ordered to size so shouldnt need too much done to it. Although all my BM's are short so will need the hems taken up too. Putting all my faith into this seamstress tomorrow..........just hope her shop is open! if she says she cant do it I can feel a bridezilla moment coming on....... and the woman who sold me those dresses will be getting it!

well some good news! have got my 3 original dresses listed on ebay, and i now have bids on each one of them! so i have got back out what I paid for them anyway. And between the 3 of them i have 28 watchers, so hopefully will make a wee profit on them! YAS!
I have not gone to the seamstress yet. Am gonna wait until my BM comes up and we will go together when she tries on the dress. The seamstress is across the road from my bridal shop and i will be going to try on my dress then anyway to show my BM's and try it with veils. So will do it all at the same time.
also emailed the woman in the shop again who said she is shocked that the dress wont do up on sil2b who is a size 8. She said for most size 8 girls she needs to order the dress in a size 4!! dont believe that at all, but she said to get back in touch once my BM comes up and we have been to the seamstress to let her know how we got on, so at least she is bothered.

Moral of the story - don't trust girls to tell you their correct sizes! Gutted for you :( praying my flower girls don't shoot up, only bought one size bigger

I don't know if the same is true for bridesmaid dresses, but I've been told that wedding dresses are always smaller than they are sized at, not bigger - and that this is the reason why someone who is a size 10 could wind up wearing a size 16 wedding dress! Frankly I think it was poor service from your bridal shop to have sold you the 6 when you were told it was a 10 - and I assume refusing now to do anything about it? Beware having a dress made larger though - it can be tricky to get it done without being obvious. Good luck!
Now, finally, Mrs Riley
