Thinking of asking my bridesmaids to go and choose their own dress in a colour of my choice - I have seven bms...three are under 13 years of age, two live abroad and one will be pregnant at the time of the wedding, so co-ordinating matching dresses to suit all of them will be difficult! My mum suggested putting them in the same colour dress, but in different styles -that way they can choose their own, and be comfortable, and still fit in with the wedding?
Thoughts on this? Never been to a wedding where the bms are all in different dresses, but I've looked online and it seems quite popular?
CommentAuthormrsV2013
it will work but personally i would also say what lenght so they don't look odd and maybe choose the ones for the under 13 years or else that could be a disaster x

i did this for my wedding... it looks great in photos and because they chose their own dresses they were all happy (after all not everyone is the same shape, and its nice to choose something flattering for you)... i did get them matching corsages though to tie the theme all together..... it was fab! and best thing is they get dresses they like (and paid for themselves) and would wear again if they wanted!
a friend also did this when i was her bm and i appreciated it loads....

I love bridesmaids in different dresses, and they will all be happy with the choice which is a bonus. I have two wee bridesmaids and they have the same dress, but in different colours. I let them choose their own dress and their accessories too.

fantastic I'm a lot more confident now! I really liked the idea, but wasn't sure if it would be too much! thanks ladies...now all I need to do is settle on a colour :D xxx
CommentAuthorKimmie.Bride.to.be
I think they need to resemble one another though. EG. Same length, frilly, same material. It looks so effective xxx
CommentAuthorEcoFreak
I much prefer this to matching dresses - we'll ask our bm's to buy a dress in either sapphire or silver :) Then we'll get them matching corsages and probably a shrug/bolero. They're all different shapes & sizes so finding one dress they'll all like would be so much stress I can't be bothered with. Plus there's a group of about 8 of us who have been close friends for a decade now, I don't think I could pick between them so this way I can afford to have them all! Xx

I've got 3 bm's, they're not the same shape/size or even born in the same decade so I'm letting them choose the dress and having them made in the same colour. They'll have the same flowers and poss the same shoes so I don't think it'll look too mishmashed...i hope lol x
CommentAuthor~feebee~
I think it looks fab. I thought my MOH and bridesmaid would wear different but when my MOH saw the bridesmaids dress she said she'd like the same. I'm happy because they're happy! Less stress!! lol
Finally Mrs Grove :)
CommentAuthorMrsWade2B
ive asked all my bridesmaids to pick their own dress. Ive requested they all be floor length, the same colour and preferably the same fabric though that is up for debate if they LOVE the dress.
however, my MOH wants a purple dress as she looks ridiculous in green apparently (we are having a sage and ivory theme with hints of purples). im not convinced about having different colour and different style dresses as they arent very connected but we shall see. we are all going shopping together so at least i can give my opinion on the dresses.
CommentAuthorOWB
My bridesmaids seem to think they have to have the same dress, despite me tell them several times that they can have what suits them. I really like the mismatched look.
If only life could be one long tea break
CommentAuthorAtaraxia
I love the mismatched dress look, too.. I tried getting my girls to wear different dresses in the same colour, or different dresses in complimentary colours... But they always all ended up liking one dress so now they have all matching outfits - same dresses, accessories and jewellery. I am hoping to mismatch them up a bit with slightly different hair pieces and styles
Got married 27th June and blessed on July 5th 2012

CommentAuthorDelirium
For my sisters wedding the bridesmaids are all wearing the same dress, style and colour - fortunately we're all roughly the same shape so it suits us all. I'm undecided what I'll do with mine though. I keep coming across 'rainbow' bridesmaids which look fab so might do that.
CommentAuthormym72
I think it'll work as long as they're similar in length. Different shades would work as well. In fact, when my parents got married (a lifetime ago lol) they had three bm's (aged 6, 8 and 10) in completely different colours. All had a pastel colour in the same style/length but were allowed to choose their favourite colour. The were in lemon, pink and blue and it actually looked good in the pics.
CommentAuthorcherry82
I love the whole mismatched thing. I have 4 bridesmaids but 2 different style dresses. They are the same colour but i said its up to them. My opinion was that im not the one wearing it so it's their choice x
CommentAuthorJanie
we have 3 BM's and a MOH, the bm's are all sizes 8-10 so have the same style dress and colour. THe MOH Is slightly bigger so is having a pink dress and picking a style that will go with the bm's.
WE picked the BM's ourselves, but are going to let the MOH pick her own

CommentAuthorjoey86
I've asked my bms to buy their own dresses and therefore felt I couldn't really dictate what they could and couldn't wear. I've given them a colour, which they're happy with and I'm not fussed if they go for different shades - I quite liked the mis-matched effect! This decision is also down to budget constraints, but even if we could afford it, I would have let them choose their own dresses as they're all different people and wouldn't suit the same thing!
CommentAuthorRachelMarie
i'm having 2 bridesmaid my twin and my daughter they are both in different dresses but same colour as my daughter is only 13 i did't want her dressing to old for her age. i'm having my 2 nieces for flower girls who's dresses will be ivory with a sash the same colour x one of my friends is having 12 bridesmaids and she insisted they all have the same dress which looks good on some but not on others i've got to adjust my other sisters dress as she is bridesmaid for her and she not happy as she only very slim and short and dress is massive and one shouldered and not fitted ! hope i get it to fit her without changing the look or the bride will kill me!!

i love the different dresses idea looks nice, we are only having 2 bridesmaids my daughters so i dont think theres enough for the different dresses idea to work, if i gave them the choose they would proberly pick the sameanyway as there personal tastes are similar. plus they are 10 and 11 so close in age and sizes.

Think I'm going to get our MOHs to wear their own dresses- a little black dress most likely as everyone has one of them in their wardrobe. Our men will all be in kilts (yet to decide which tartan) but their jackets are black so it should all tie together nicely. Will give the ladies some sort of corsage incorporating tartan ribbon.
CommentAuthorTinsel
We're having a black and white theme and my bridesmaids are choosing their own black dresses, which they can wear again and again!

sounds awesome. I know my MIL will be very against the idea as she very much wants 'tradition' and keeps comparing our wedding to that of her other son a few years back...not really sure how I can convince her but I'm now very much convinced myself - thanks for the support!
CommentAuthorniksibum
I think I will be thinking of this idea too to be honest! All my bridesmaids are between the ages of 12 - 22 so one matching dress isn't really going to be an option! I think its good though, gives all the bridesmaids like a little induvidual twist :)

My 3 BMs are all in different dresses but sam colour, different shades, its just by chance that they are all the same length and the 2 younger ones (11 and 14) are really close in colour! I think it looks really good in photos when they are different. :0) xx

I have 4 bridesmaids and i am going the opposite way, same dress but different colours. All of my bridesmaids are aged between 22 & 26 and all size 8 or 10 (Beyatches) LOL. so the same style will be ok for them. I think if i had different sizes and ages, maybe i would also have chosen dress styles to compliment each bridesmaid.

I love this thread, I worry constantly about the bms as I want the all to be comfy and all different ages/shapes etc I'd said they can choose their own style as long as they are the same colour and material but now seeing the earlier photos I don't care if the material is the same. Yay!
I can't wait until 29/06/2013

I really hope this becomes a more popular option. I prefer this to matchy, matchy bridesmaids.
CommentAuthorNEDebz
I love it when you see bridesmaids all in tea length dresses but in different colours. I'm only having 3 BMs, all similar ages but all different sizes, one is really self concious so wants to wear a floor length dress, the other two arent bothered but as I'm getting married abroad I think they'll suffer in the heat. So I'm getting mine made from china so have told them they can have any dress as long as they're all the same material and colour
