Hi, I'm new to this site but want some help or maybe really reassurance! Me and my OH are recently engaged and have started looking at venues. We've decided to get married in my home village nae york even though we live in norfolk now. It just doesn't feel right to get married down here as I don't see it as home. So we've looked around and the venue we like the most is max 80 guests and that's without a formal top table, we'd have to be on a round one. But that's ok. But our first draft list is currently 92 for day with extra for evening. Ive had a look and I can slash the list but that means taking a few off we want in the hope that some guests can't make it, and we can then bump the others up at a later date. Do you think that's ok? I just don't love any of the other bigger venues we've seen. I know the people are important but at the same time I want to be excited about our venue, the food and the photo options and this is really the only one. I'm just worried its too small. They normally specialise in smaller intimate weddings but we can get 80 if we take it exclusive use. Any thoughts gratefully received! I just want to get this bit sorted so I can start thinking about all the fun stuff to do next!

    Thanks! X

The bigger evening do sounds like your best bet. If you just explain that you would love them to be there but it's the venue size that is the issue and reassure them that as people decline you will start moving those only invited to the evening onto the reception list (that's what we are doing)

Thanks guys. It's middlethorpe hall near the race course Jenny. It's lovely. We want something quite private and preferably with accommodation for the bridal and grooms party and family do this ticks the box (apart from numbers!) Going for a second viewing tomorrow. Oh well maybe I need to lose a few friends over the next year!

I'm getting married in York too, at the grange hotel.

We decided we only wanted a smallish day do so are having fifty max. One of the advantages of this is that it keeps cost down and we can spend more on the evening do (which we are holding elsewhere as the grange is to small for our 130 evening guests and the layout isn't too suited either.

Have you had a look at merchant Taylor's or merchant adventurers hall? They're quite stunning and not badly priced.

    Middleton hall is gorgeous though.

You could always have evening reception at the racecourse (thou I hear the food isn't that good.)

    Xx

Ok thanx that's a good idea. Well our plan is to get a marquee/tented dance floor for outside in the nice gardens and have that for the evening reception. There is an extra cost but it gives us more room. I think it could be quite cool as some I've seen as like draped with fabric to match your colour scheme. So we'd have the smaller wedding breakfast on the house and then the evening do
Out on the lawn. Does that sound weird?! I don't want people to think its odd. But the dance floor area in the house is small and in the basement do could get hot and sweaty! The food is supposed to be great, I'm going to test it out tomorrow! X

No, that sounds lovely! And it really is a beautiful venue, a friend got married there and everyone commented on how lovely it was and that the food was fantastic.

Let us know how you get on!
