So due to having the DIY bug (going to have to store them safely now though...); I was looking into making my own wedding cake topper but not sure what clay to use. I brought air dry clay today but apparently that is ok to use but can contaminate food so been advised on polymer clay.

Anyone used polymer clay and is it any good for making the topper as I need it to be sturdy and to last the 21 months in which I hopefully get married. :S

Im not sure about that, But my cake is not going to be real anyway only one 6inch will be. Mine is air dry clay, but the lady in the shop said she puts hers in the oven on a low temp, dont know if that would make a difference or not. Im just finding mine really hard, I wish i started the bride first lol.

My air drying clay ins't actually gong to sit on my cake either, it's on a little white plastic higher thing, don't know the name of it, but it sits on the top tier.

I have used Fimo before, when i was making keyrings, it is so much easier to mold, and already has colours, but can be quite expensive in shops, so bayE it i would so, you can buy bundles for cheaper.

If your struggling to get it to dry or mold properly, make the initial shape out of tinfoil, then go over with a layer of clay, so you don't use as much clay, easier to dry, and you can control the shaping (Y)

Awesome thank you guys and Lauren; this sounds stupid but doesn't the foil over heat in the oven or does the clay protect it as it bakes? :) Some also said about using copper wire or cocktail sticks.

Because it's air drying clay, you don't need to put it in the oven, it's thinner layer that will dry on it's own quickly. I'm not sure on copper wire or cocktail sticks, ive never used that method, you may have to google it to check it out :) x

Thanks brilly will look at them. Lauren, I never thought of tin foil, I make all my paper mache things from foil. Wish i had done that first now, It would have had a much better shape and saved some clay. I managed to make the body, Iv held it together with bits of a wire coat hanger. Cooked it for 5/10mins just to dry it off a little and left it on the side to dry fully. Im going to wait and see if it looks ok (lol) and if it does i will do the head another day and just glue it on.

Well its drying, So i just hope no cracks appear overnight. I have never used clay before and i thought it would be easy but i found it really hard to work with. Kept sliding over all, I kept squashing parts by handling it to hard. If its not wet enough it just cracked. I couldnt work out how to make the coat hang of the back like the ones off the net. I have noticed it shrunk in the oven quite alot some parts more than others. Someone told me you can sand and drill the clay once its dry. So im going to try and get a better shape on the arms and shoes then. I want the head to look like h2b(not detailed but so people know its ment to be us) so thats why im trying to make them, Think my bride will be better to make as i found a few vids on how to do the dress in layers. Theres 2 pics in my album in diy. Tell me what you think (i wont be offended) I can then sand it down where it needs it hopefully. I really dont want to pay full price for them. So far iv only really used about a £1 in clay lol. So if it works its another bargain to add to the never ending list.

something else that might be worth considering if you are making your own toppers is modelling wax, you can find 'create your own candle' kits quite cheep on alot of sites .. you don't have to add the wick :)

I'd say the only thing with wax, is the easy to mold ones have a low melting point, so if you're getting married in the summer on a hopefully hot day, with hot food and a lot of people in a warm room, it may melt! So check the melting point out before buying (Y) x
