Hi there - I was just chancing my luck to see if anyone else is planning a rustic country wedding! I'm looking to do a lot of the decorating, favours, centre pieces - pretty much anything I can do myself I will. We also wanted to save money by using a local barn or cow shed (obviously not recently used, might take a while to clear out and get rid of any nasty smells!).

Has anyone done this recently? I am trying to find out how to make the logistics of it all work - including catering!

It's looking more and more like this isn't going to be as cheap as I thought but I really have my heart set on it. We want something different for our wedding as we've been to quite a lot of hotel weddings recently and none of them would really suit our personalities.

    Thanks!

we were pretty much the same, my partner really didnt want a package wedding that doesn't fit with the kind of people we are! barn weddings are actually really popular in a lot of places, but as a result the prices can easily get just as bad as anywhere else. scotland seems to have incredibly few barn style venues available (and a couple of those that are options are probably way out of our budget!) so we too have looked at the more rustic diy approach, though not in great detail as of yet. this also fitted with us because a lot of places dont want you using your own caterers near us and we have our hearts set on a pig-roast and bbq combo! iv no idea where you're from since your page is restricted, but it looks like it might be a logistical nightmare for us since most of the local places are working farms, unwilling to hold a wedding. the one place that has really excited us though is here ************************************************ not many pictures on there but theres some in my albums :) good luck x

There's a place in York called villa farm, which I think is barn conversions but they do a lot of weddings and I think are quite flexible.

We looked in to that sort of thing, but as we are both not that organised decided a hotel deal then a sports club venue on the night would be by far simplest.

There are quite a few on google....some do look quite dear though!

We are having a barn for our reception on an old farm house (marrying in our local church) and my friend who is marrying next year is also having a barn wedding on a working farm. It can be quite expensive though! Her venue is costing £13K and ours is close to £5K, however because it isnt actually on a farm it was much cheaper. They are very popular venues now and so the price does reflect this! All the hotel weddings we looked at were much cheaper than the barn ones, but we had our heart set on a barn with all the grounds. Hope you can find one you like, but I doubt you will be able to find a 'cheap' option. Most barns we looked at charged around £5K just for the hire of them without any food or drink. Also if you actually want the ceremony in a barn you will have to go with one that is registered for weddings, so a barn being used on a normal farm wont have this. Where abouts are you from? xxx

Thanks for all your input ladies! I'm still trying to find a venue (and forgot to log in on here to check for responses!). I'm from Perthshire, Scotland so you'd think finding a barn would be easy! We're very restricted on our budget and haven't properly set a date for this reason alone!
