H2b told me earlier that he'd received the invoice through to make payment of the balance before the big day. We've had some issues along the way such as them giving our original date away despite provisionally booking it and even the wedding planner sitting saying "yeah 1st oct" only 2 mins later at the reception desk to pay the deposit and find nope they'd messed up, 2nd deposit being needed by them 5 months earlier than stated on the original booking, being told that the seat covers were actually £2.95pp not £2 as first advised and it was all easily coped with.

The invoice states that they have increased the VAT in accordance with the VAT increase costing a fair amount more depsite this being a fixed price package of £3995 for 80 people. But they've also added a £300 fee for god knows what! I can only assume it is some kind of breakage deposit. Further to that in really really tiny writing near the bottom, it says that they don't allow alcohol favours. Well that is me in a right mood!

I want to phone them now and kick off but I'd rather do it face to face. I can't even begin to say how raging I am now. >:-(

I've read all the documents we got, the contract etc and there is one little bit I think they can possibly hold us to on it saying that they can increase prices at any time for costs not known to them at the time of booking. Well the last invoice sent to us was in May which as far as I'm aware was after the VAT went up is it not? So they did know! There is nothing about the favours or the £300 anywhere.

I think the venue do hate us cos of the mucked up the date, they ended up having to give us the aug date for the same price as the oct date. I now feel like they are just trying anything to get the money out of us!

best thing to do is ring trading standards explain to them what u have just done on here and they will tell u what action u can take, after speakin with trading standards then ring the venue inform them u have rung trading standards and what they have said mentionin ts alone should snap them out of tryin to rob u.

good luck and dont let them rip u off or take advantage x

Keep your temper, write it out point by point. Go see them, write the answers and get them to sign what you agree on then and there.
Most importantly, keep your temper. If you get their backs up they will respond by being awkward. Insist on seeing the manager if you can't get anywhere with the staff you do see and point it all out rationally.
Hopefully they'll back down - on the VAT certainly as like you say, they knew about it in May!!

hmm i would do as suggested ring trading standards i would also maybe ring cab see what they say sometimes they are really good with advice its a shame you didnt change venue after their first mess up cause im sure they dont like you once you complain but anyway i would do that then call and ask for a meeting with the manager take along all paperwork and just tell them its not on and let them know youve called trading standards ect i would also ask for a completely itemised bill where everything and i mean everything is accounted for right down to every napkin id also tell them you are seeking legal advice and if any tiny thing goes wrong on the day you will sue the pants off them xxxxxx but say it all with a smile of course lol

even though they knew about the vat rising before they sent the invoice they are entitled to add the extra cost on i`m afraid ..... had you paid the balance before the increase they wouldnt have been able to charge you more

Thanks guys. I've just spent 45 minutes on hold trying to get thru to trading standards and had to hang up! grr! Asking h2b to do it when he finishes at 4 but know he always has "stuff to do". >:-/

I could get the vat increase if there was vat specified on the original booking. But it isn't. It was a fixed price booking, a deal if you will for the more "cost efficient wedding". Huh. I know they can add on costs at any time as they say that there can be an annual reveiw of prices but that again would've been in may when they saw us so not buying it from them. I totally believe that they are out to try to con us and get back the £1k that they had to reduce the price by due to their error.

As for any other increases, they have to justify them like, it costs more for this or that not just ooh we will plonk another 2.5% onto a £4k wedding. Soz guys, I'm absolutely raging, don't mean to be cheeky to any of you. xx

Just to wee me off more, I've gone over my credit card limit today (no idea how) and ran out of free minutes just before trying trading standards. So that call that I got nowhere with is going to cost a fair few pounds. Not feeling any happier right now.

Update** Didn't manage to get through to trading standards but when we got to the hotel the manager on duty advised that the favours issue was due to some wedding afew weeks ago and there were 2 ppl who "saved" up as many of them as they could and got blitzed and then lifted by the cops at some point later that night which puts their reputation on the line. Fair enough but at least offer a compromise. They did. They will hand them out as the guests are leaving (not what I wanted but will have to do)

The VAT, apparently despite being a fixed price the cost is still vat-able and the rules still apply. Told them that I'm raging and that they have had ample opportunity to raise this with us i.e the last 7 months! Needless to say I will grudgingly pay it. The retainer will not need to be handed over physically but they will take card details so if required they will take it from us.

Still not entirely happy about it but I've got no-where to go with it. Even if TS came back and said that the VAT thing was a no-go, its only £100 (only! haha) and not worth my time and effort squabbling over. I will make it perfectly clear when we visit them in a few weeks time that this is a joke to spring this on anyone so close the their day and that if ANYTHING goes wrong on the day I will hold them personally responsible/be demanding money back. Grrrrr!
