So apparently it is supposed to be that the BMs and groomsmen are supposed to stand up with you during the ceremony (is that even right? I'm not sure) but my lovely H2B is kind of a loner and not only doesn't want groomsmen, but his BM is his Dad :) I am now thinking if it is just my ladies standing up beside me it will look visually lopsided and draw attention to his small wedding party (which he is embarrassed about anyway poor thing). Is it OK if the BMs just sit down during the ceremony even if it's just a short civil one?

I'd imagine it wouldn't matter if they sit down but our venue told us the bms would be standing but they never mentioned the groomsmen standing. I just thought it was the bms and the best man who were meant to stand xx

Ours didn't stand, there were seats on the front row reserved for them. We were the only ones who had to stand throughout the ceremony - it was a civil ceremony with two readings, took about 35 mins. It didn't occur to us not to reserve their seats, we assumed they would sit down.

It's only in America that they do that weird standing up malarky! Every wedding I've been to they've ALL sat down :) xx

I'm expecting that they will sit unless they have duties to do. My bridesmaids will sit as soon as I have handed my bouquet to one of them and the MOH has made sure the train is sitting right. My father will stand behind me until he gives me away (unless his knee bothers him). The best men will stand until the rings are handed to the vicar.

I think it's a US thing to have them stand as well, I'm sure they sit over here.... if not you can have yours sit anyway, it's your day :)

I wouldn't worry about it looking lobsided anyway... I think it's usually the bridal party which is bigger, we're going to look lobsided the other way as we've ended up having his brothers as ushers and I only have two bridesmaids, I don't care though-I have other friends I could ask but I don't want to, I'm happy with my two :)

I'm so glad someone brought this up. I have 1 bridesmaid and 1 MAN of honour, h2b has bm (his dad) and his 2 brothers are ushers. I should hopefully have them all sat from the start (his bm after the rings are given). Thanks ladies!! X

Defo have them sat down if thats what you want :) i dont want mine standing up, i think (may sound like brideszilla lol) but if they stand up it would take some of the attention away from you and H2B! xx

Yeah that's an American thing, they even have the bridesmaids walk down the aisle first (which I prefer).

It's not just an American thing.
I am from New Zealand and all the weddings I went to back home, the BMs walked down the aisle first and stood beside the bride during the ceremony.

When I was MOH for my best friend over here, the bride walked down the aisle first and we sat for the ceremony.

My best friend said she was given the option of the bridesmaids going first or her going first.

I've been BM twice and we sat both times.
The Best Man stood with the groom until the ceremony started, then sat when everyone else does after the standing ovation for bridal entrance xx

I didn't know the bridesmaids walking first was American, I thought that was to do with the old wives tale of distracting the demons from who the real bride was?? I'm having my bridesmaids go first but everyone will be sitting x
