So for the last week ive had the worstt cold & cough ever its now got to the point its so bad i spent most of last night awake. My stomach and ribs are so sore from me coughing so much, my throat is killing me, i feel sick to point where urge from too much coughing, and im getting short of breath in the mornings....so i made a doctors appointment for today

The doctor was so patronising talked to me like i was some thick teenager. He then continued to laugh about it all and tell me how every one gets this and ill just have to ride it out. Even though he told me was more than likely a Virus The only way he'll give me anything for it is if i cough up green phlem :(!

So annoyed feel so cr*ppy being laughed at and made to feel stupid - its no wonder i dont go docs much when this is how i get treated :(. So Im now back in bed & feeling sorry for myself :(

I really do hate being ill

They can't do anything for a virus, all you can do is rest and take it easy; doctors get fed up because if people come in with things like this it spreads to others, we're told not to go to our doctor's surgery with viral infections like flu etc.

Best thing you can do is have lots of bed rest, get some Vit C supplements as this can boost your immune system, and stock up on cold, flu and cough remedies to take the edge off symptoms: ibuprofen will also help with the pain in your stomach and chest, and try to get a non-medicinal cough mixture that you can take as often as you need.

If your cought continues for more than 3 weeks, see your GP again; they may be able to give you an inhaler, I had one when I had a cough for 4 months, but it will only help the symptoms, it won't clear up the infection.

I hope you get better soon. Keep a close eye on it as I've known a few people who have had it turn into pneumonia. I guess that is why he asked about the green phlegm. As for the pain and the soreness you can make your own stronger pain killers by taking a ibuprofen and paracetamol at the same time. (my doc told me to do this when I had problems a couple of years ago.) As long as you don't take more than the dose it states then you will be fine. The two taken together causes a chemical reaction that then makes it work better. Like anything always read the label.

If it makes you feel any better, I've been signed off for weeks with a virus that turned into post-viral fatigue and there's absolutely nothing the doctor can do. Anti-biotics would just make it worse so all I can do is lie on the couch all day.

Have you tried Covonia Night-time medicine? It is amazing and gets rid of your cough so you can have a decent night's sleep.

    Get better soon honey. x

Have you tried propping yourself up on a pillow? I always find that helps me if I have a cold and cough.

It is amazing. Neil and I had an awful cough (granted it wasn't as bad as yours hun) but we couldn't sleep and it was driving us insane. We took it 20 minutes before hitting bed and we had the best night's sleep ever. xxx

Re mixing ibuprofen and paracetamol, IMO the best way to do this is at 2 hour intervals, as it keeps you 'topped up' (eg, 2 ibuprofen at 8am, 2 paracetamol at 10am, 2 more ibuprofen at 12pm, 2 more paracetamol at 2pm, and so on). Just please please please check anything else you're taking, as some cold/flu remedies contain these drugs so you can end up overdosing which is obv not good!

You could also try sleeping propped up, it can help congestion in your chest; I find nights are the worst with a cough. Also try popping a bowl of water in the room, apparently it can help with phlegm; steaming can also help

Sudafed is good for getting rid of phlegm but it does contain paracetamol so you have to make sure that you are not over dosing on it. The doctor used to prescribe it me when I was a kid cause I had loads of problems with phlegm and ear infections.

Ive been trying to get an appointment for nearly a month! if the doc gets funny with me when i do see him he'll regret it!!!

night nurse is pretty good stuff, its what my OH uses when he get a chesty cough and fluid on his lungs, and (although they are revolting) fishermans friend sweets are great at clearing the synuses and helping to bring up any phlegm
