    Hi Ladies,

We finally had our meeting with our Humanist. We are having a hand fasting ceremony which is basically a ribbon placed around mine & H2Bs hands with the turns of the ribbon to symbolise my joining his "clan". We also have to say a personal dedication to each other. I have written mine from the heart. I didnt want it to be too cheesy, so its quite plainly written. Not very poetic but still passionate and from the heart I think. I've also written a poem that I am going to read. The humanist suggested we have a singer for the ceremony - being a wedding singer I decided I wasnt singing on my day. Not because I dont enjoy singin but I would find it twee and a bit cheesy. So I have a space for either a poem, a reading or music....Not sure what to choose. Was going to have the song from the wedding singer (I wanna grow old with you) but its really short and I dont know who wold read it out....
So Im having a think about what else can go in there just now. Have asked H2B but he is worried about writing his "personal dedication" thing and didnt have an opinion on readings......He is more interested in the music being played (which is fair enough, he loves music)

Anyways, is anyone else writting stuff for their service? A reading or a poem? Personal dedications (kinda like vows)?

Also wanted to offer my help to anyone considering a humanist ceremony (for anyone that does not know - humanism just basically means non religious)

    I had a handfasting ceremony as well (a multi-faith one, I'm an Eclectic Pagan, hubby's a Protestant)
We wrote our own vows... we managed to reduce our MoH and one of the Best Men into a blubbering mess (I also started crying during my vows- there was no controlling it. Luckily I had one of my BMs on standby with tissues).

My husband was worried about writing his vows as well, but he did a great job (and he had my BMs help).

We didn't have anything extra, we preferred to keep it simple.

We're not writing our own vows as I really want to say the traditional ones. However, we are getting married in a Unitarian church, which gives us more flexibility. I'm walking down the aisle to a beautiful song that I wouldn't have een allowed in a civil ceromony, but the 'hymn' we're doing are old pop songs. The music has been the most important part for us, especially for h2b.

The minister is writing our service just for us, even though it's in a chapel there will be very little religion as our minister wants to focus on us as a couple. I'm walking myself down the aisle and I'm not being given away!

Yeah, I want to keep it quite simple too. Im so worried about crying during vows! Ive bought waterproof make up but Im still worried lol.

The humanist guy has given us a script which we've edited to suit ourselves but I dont want H2B to use whats in the script, Id like him to just say what he feels you know. I think he thinks I want something amazingly romantic but really Id be happier if he just said - I want to marry you because you make me happy, you make me laugh and I think your beautiful. That will do for me :-)

My poem is very light hearted I think. So I want to find something that really suits US but then I worry no one else will get it lol.

That sounds lovely OWB, we have to say some of the traditional vows too and have the whole "you may now kiss the bride" thing. I dont think it would feel like a proper wedding without that for me :-) Ive been dreaming of that moment for so long!!

Sounds like your minister is really helpful, thats really sweet of him. Some of the registrars I spoke to were the least friendly people in the world lol.

He's a she! And she's lovely. She's given me a list of things to go away and think about, would I like hand-fasting, or the glass smashing, or a unity candle.

We're also having our mums sign the register, and h2bs dad is going to read a poem.

lol, I always assume its a bloke. Dont know why. That sounds lovely. Our guy offered a candle lighting thing but as we are hoping to get married outside, we thought candles might be tricky to light....especially in Scotland lol.

We've got my brother and one of the best men to sign the register. I have no idea who to choose to do a reading for us. Its a hard one because our friends and familly are either shy or mental. Not many are inbetween te too hahaha.

We didn't write our own service for our London park blessing, but our 'celebrant' did. She wrote it and then emailed it to us a week or so beforehand, so we could agree it. She's hubby's ex-flatmate and a very good friend of both of ours so she knew us very well and it was so personal to us. Everyone was choked by her beautiful words.
Like you, Rockabilly, we had a handfasting too, which nobody there had ever experienced. Hubby's dad got confused and kept wrapping the twine around and around and around! We had to undo some of it or there wouldn't have been enough for everyone else to have their go LOL!

Ive not personally wrote anything but we have added a few things to make it more personal to us.
We are having the rose ceremony after h2b and the girls say some special vows that I found online.
Matt will then give them each a special necklace called "new beginnings" after we have exchanged rings joining us as one big family!

We are writing our entire ceremony from scratch, no rules or banned anything we can literally do it however we want including readings, vows and songs (although we're skipping the singing of anything) which will be our, actually it will probably be JUST ME :D so MY next job once this INFERNAL PIECE OF BEEP DISSERTATION (ahem, sorry! :D) is handed in will be writing the ceremony etc.

Because we'll already be legally married when we are in Spain, so wouldnt have a signing of a marriage certificate staged or otherwise, and we have decided that we want to include our guests somehow but don't quite fancy having a handfasting or a ring warming or anything like that so I stumbled across a blog where the couple had a marriage declaration signed by all the guests... a Jewish and Quaker tradition but easy enough to adapt to be non-religious while giving us a nice way to include our guests and it acts like a marriage certificate and a guestbook all in one :) My bridesmaid is a fantastic artist so we are going to ask her if she will make one especially for us.

Everything else can wait! *gets down, goes back to stupid coursework*

To all you girls worried about blubbing through the vows- it really isn't a big deal. Just take your time with the vows and make sure one of the bridesmaids or groomsmen have tissues at the ready for you. Add waterproof make-up and lots of primer, you're good to go. If you can brave it, use clear mascara instead of coloured and, if it runs, you can't tell.

Best of luck with the dissertation, Ataraxia! It's so much of a relief when it's done!

ooooh I just got bare minerals stuff and didnt get the primer (far too expensive for the entire kit). Can anyone reccomend a good primer that doesnt cost a fortune? Also Ive heard of folk using hairspray on top of their make up to make it last longer, does that actually work? Ive never tried it myself....

Finished my bits of the wedding script and I must say Im quite chuffed but now wondering if my poem is a bit cheesy lol

I've been using bare minerals for the last few weeks, bought it in March, loving it. I did get their primer because I bought the kit and it came with it and I have to say it's worth the money in my opinion. I have only ever used two primers before this one - an Estée Lauder one that was amazing on and made my skin like marble but far too expensive to justify, and then I tried the No7 matte primer and I have to say that was absolutely garbage, it goes on like caulk and if I wasn't freshly moisturised it would set wherever I put it and leave white chalky smears... Or good. Also the spots, oh my word it made me break out badly. Bre minerals is lovely, only have to use one pump to do your whole face and it doesn't suffocate your skin.

My chief bridesmaid swears by the hairspray thing, she says she does it every time she goes out!

How much is their primer to buy on its own? I did consider the full kit but it was so expensive, so I got a tester kit type thing. But now Im thinking i shouldve bought the whole kit cos it has the concealer in it too...can you buy the primer without buying the kit?

I am gunna have a make run through on sunday :-) I love messing about with make up. Ill try the hairspray thing too :-)

Yeah you can buy all their stuff separately, it's £19 for the primer and you get a bigger one if you buy it separately. I got the face kit which was £49 and came with three brushes (full face, smaller face and concealer brush), two foundations, a veil, bronzer and a primer. Oh and a dvd for instructions. They are all smaller than the retail pots but mine lasted me about a month of every single day use and three night touch ups... not bad really! I went back and bought a full size foundation, a full size primer and the lady at my local counter gave me a makeup lesson with all the products, I ended up buying the eyeshadow she used there and then, and going to go back and buy the mascara, the blush and the eyeliner when my current ones runs out :D (Can you tell I'm a little obsessed)

It's expensive but I think it's worth it, i've used a LOT of makeup over the last ten years and this is the best stuff I've ever used that I haven't had to drop more money than sense on.

I might buy that then, I bought the £25 kit. It has 2 powders, a brush and a lipgloss. now I think about it I shouldve gone for the more expensive kit but my mum was in my earhole. She kept going on about it being expensive and I was like well its worth it cos its for my wedding day! She persuaded me the less expensive kit would work but now Im thinking its not as good without the primer? I wonder if I can get a small one to use just for a couple of trials and the big day? Im so skint at the moment it sucks sucks sucks :-(

You could go ask the beauty counter lady if she will give you a sample pot? When I was in last the girl gave me a cleanser sample to try and it came in a little pot that would easily contain a few days worth of primer. My h2b gave me a bit of a telling off when I came home with what is now over £100 worth of makeup but after the last 6-8 weeks even he says it's worth every penny because my skin has never looked better and that IS coming from a man haha.

I find the primer does help the makeup to last a bit longer and feels much silkier on too, however I have skipped the primer a couple of times and found that a rich moisturiser after a bath or shower is almost as good.
