Hi all, I ordered a Garter today, as after talking with my mum, she said it was traditional to wear one on the big day. What i'm wondering is, how many of you guys are wearing one on the day ? and do any of you know what the tradition is ? I'm not sure whether I want to wear one or not. The one i've ordered is beautiful, really pretty, but don't know if i'll be comfy wearing it.

    Help please !!

    xx

It's something to do with the bride and groom's clothes being lucky or something, and they used to get torn so they throw things? It's on a thread here somewhere?

I'm not keen on having one, I think it'd drive me up the bloody wall... but I dunno yet. Never tried one!

I already have mine, as in my country we have a game with it, where people (men and women) bid to get the garter and the winner gets to take it off (traditionally with his teeth)

I wore one and had it made with an embroidered picture of my hubbys treasured motorbike on it. Although I was worried it would fall down as I was walking down the aisle as I was wearing tartan stockings so I ended up slipping it on after the ceremony. xx

Worn to hold up a bride's stockings, wedding garters have a long and romantic history. Tossing the garter at the groom's nose in the wedding couple's bedroom after the ceremony was a common activity of the bridal party in the Dark Ages. Whichever bridesmaid successfully landed the garter on his nose, would be deemed the next to marry.

Greed took over the tradition and it was common for guests to stampede toward the bride at the alter to get the garter. Throwing the garter to the mob saved the bride from being trampled. The guest who received the garter would then wear it on his hat until he gave it to a woman for luck.

The garter can also be used for the old, new borrowed blue too!

am having one .... its blue with white lace around it being my something blue

Ataraxia right it was tradition that after the ceremony that all the female guest ripped aprt her dress and took apart for them self has luck for them to fine marriage but had dresses became more expensive and more meaning full people started to replace this with flowers to throw and some throw thier garters

its is also used as part of ur something old, new, borrow and blue now and for something for the husband to take off when marriaged (seen as more of a treat for him) lol

I'm wearing a garter. It's one of the few traditions I like, probably because I don't know the full story of its origins, lol.
I have a gorgeous one from Figleaves... then I saw a truly lovely one in Past Times, but I didn't want to go through the whole palava of selling my original garter, which I still love, so I kept it and decided to forget about getting a new one.

I'm using my garter as my something blue.
