Well invites for the evening reception have gone out and now a lot of people are asking where our gift list is. When we decided to get married people asked what we'd be wanting as presents we said nothing as we weren't getting married to get presents. Now the invites have come out everyone keeps asking where our list is and what we want.

We keep telling everyone that as we are not having a convential wedding that there is no need to buy us gifts, but friends and family are still saying that they want to.

I'm just curious as to what everyone else is doing in respect of presents from their guests

We've put money poems in with our invites as we'd really like to go on honeymoon after the wedding with our 2 kids so it's going to be expensive. As we've been together for 16 years we have most of the stuff we need for our home. I think most people going to a wedding like to give a gift of some sort.

We have lived together for a few years now so we have done a mixture of both things as when we talked with the parents they all thought it rude to ask for cash!
So we have asked for cash donations towards a new sofa which is the only thing we really need and we will also have a small gift list form argos that ppl can use to get little things that we can replace with the stuff we have now, so they have the option of a gift gift or a money gift

We asked for vouchers from the travel agents we booked our honeymoon with. We did end up with some cash, and some actual gifts, but overall people have got us vouchers, and we've got well over half of the cost back.

We had a 'traditional' list as we didn't live together and owned no household stuff, but weren't bothered whether people bought from the list, got other gifts or gave cash and vouchers. We got all four. We 'sold' the vouchers to my parents as we didn't have time to shop before moving to Germany (very short notice move!!!) and the cash came in useful for furniture.

We've lived together over a year and have everything we want, everyone knows this, so because we're having a 3 month gap between the wedding and honeymoon we've put money poems in the invites asking for money towards the honeymoon. Although we will also be making it clear that we're not inviting people for the gift, but only ask for something if they want to give us it, its not expected xx

I couldn't ask for money, as i myself don't give money as cash so it would be hypocritical. I understand people want to give a gift to the couple, but when you have everything you need, then what could they possibly get us (apart from an Ipad for h2b that is lol) x

we moved 2 houses into one about 18 months ago so more than 2 of everything!!! loads got sold but we need nothing for the house (other than a full time maid!) so we would like family holidays (cheap and cheerful!) and hopefully one abroad soon (if circumstances allow) xx

This is the poem we put in our invites,
    Your presence at our wedding
    is present enough
    but if we're honoured with
    a gift from you
    may we respectfully request
    a gift of money
to help the dream of a honeymoon
    come true!

I'm not a massive fan of giving money, especially if there's nothing to say what it will be spent on.
We're having a gift list from J0hn Lew1s. We've been together for nearly six years so the bits we bought when we first moved in together need replacing. Works out perfectly really!

We've got our gift list with J0hn Lew1s, got a range of cheap options (such as individual plates to make up a set which cost £4 each) going up to a toaster that we could never justify buying for about £70 and lots in between! It was fun putting it together - H2B says it feeds my shopping addiction without actually shopping, so he's chuffed LOL!

We will be asking for money towards the cost of buying a VW camper van. We have lived together for 3 years so we don't need anything and we could never afford to buy the camper on our own.
I think it is ok to ask for money as long as people nderstand what it is for. Once we have managed to buy a camper van we will be able to send everyone who donated cash a picture of us holidaying in it!

It is really a difficult questio to answer. We also have everything we need/want and are getting married abroad and would really like our friends and family to join us out there. Its nowgoing to be in Portugal so flights can be bought cheap and I know some of my friends want to share villas etc to save costs so I'm really loathed to ask for a gift as well but some people have mentioned it to us already. God we are not even getting married for another 11 months but I'd rather they saved to come to the wedding and have a great holiday than have to save a bit extra just to give us a present.

thats it, i'd rather my friends have a good night at our reception instead of them worrying about buying us a present, especially with how hard things are for people at the moment. Its very hard to know what to do for the best.

We weren't going to ask for presents at all but we were told by so many people that if we didn't then we'd end up with 20 toasters and 30 electric carving knives! I know exactly what everyone is saying, but the truth is no matter how hard up people are they will want to get you something. We were so surprised by the generosity of a lot of our guests.

We're having a few different gift lists - regular John Lewis, honeymoon experiences (paying for cookery classes, diving courses, car hire in Singapore etc) and a gift list with the RSA (so we can buy a piece of art). I know when I'm a guest I'm much happier when I can just pick from a list rather than having to worry whether I've chosen the right thing.

we will have a small gift list and money towards a piece of art.
I would much rather ask for something specific than get a load of 'stuff' we dont need and even if you say it doesnt matter, people will still get you something as I would want a friend or family member to have something from me to mark their day.
I do like the honeymoon experiences but we probably wont have one so would like to buy something big as a reminder of our day

At least one member of my family tends to prefer to give home made presents for birthdays and xmas as she's always on a tight budget. Given that her latest present (to my mum) was a tissue box cover with a face and googlie eyes (think Art Attack style) the mind boggles at what she'll come up with for our wedding! The thing is, she'll be offended if we say we don't want anything and will expect to give us something, but I think we might actually have to specify CASH ONLY PLEASE! Or buy us a drink from the bar.

At least if you have a gift list that goes wrong you can sell the spare toaster.

We enclosed a poem with the invite, rsvp and menu. We changed it a little bit (originally got it from ukb lol) because we would like either money or honeymoon vouchers.

    Our Wedding

We’ve been together for a few years now
    and have a lovely home.
There are not too many items that
    we don’t already own.
    So please don’t be offended
and please don’t think we’re brash
If you’re thoughts were on a present
we ‘d much prefer Thomas Cook vouchers or cash.
The choice is really up to you
and we would like to say
We hope you come and enjoy yourselves
    on this our special day

We've already paid in full for our honeymoon - but Thomas Cook have told us that if we get vouchers for our wedding then we can take them into one of their branches and they can reimburse us - and as we've already paid using our debit card, they can just put the credit back onto the card. We're both off work for another couple of weeks after we get back home though, so if we get quite a bit we've discussed having another short break.

Thomas Cook told us that too ... but they didn't tell us that you can only do it once! So we have had to wait until afterwards when we had them all.

My H2b and I have everything we need in the form of household stuffs as both been married before, so we are putting wedding poems in with the invitations. Personally all we want is to celebrate our day with family and friends, it does say in the poem if you wish to get us something, so leaving it up to the guests to make their own mind up. : )
