Hi there, I've been off the site for a long time as me and my partner have been busy bees saving, and settling into our new jobs and home in Edinburgh. Previously we always intended to have the wedding here in Scotland, however since our engagement over two years the run down property and land that his parents bought for their home and business has turned into our dream venue, and they have kindly offered for us to be married their in County Down, Northern Ireland.
However while in Scotland the registrar holds the license to marry a couple, in NI (like most places) the venue itself must have a license for you to legally be married there. We will be having the reception there regardless, but are currently looking to apply for their property to gain a license. Have any of the brides on year had to go through this process?
    Thanks :)

I have not had to go through this, but all venues in uk (england ,ireland, scottland and wales) have to have a civil licence, which I don't think is much of a problem, prob just need to pay for the licence ( another way of councilgetting more money, venues pay for licence, couple pay for registra) then maybe public liability insurance, an a quick health sn saftey evaluation.

I know of a venue localish to me who the couple who owned it did it up for there own wedding, snd now hire it out for weddings, a venue licence cover the whole year from when its issued. Have your inlaws thought aboutaybe doung this if your wedding all goes well?

Having looked into it extensively in the first two years of our engagement, I am almost certain that Scotland is quite exceptional in that you can legally be married in your own kitchen so long as the individual marrying you is happy to do it! My partner and I are atheists, and as it turns out there are only something like 11 venues in the whole of County Down, excluding religious places, where you can legally be married. Furthermore humanist ceremonies are not legally binding so it will have to be a civil wedding, which is not a problem. We have the paperwork for the application, and there are quite a lot of hurdles, though I am not sure how rigidly they are enforced. Fortunately since his parent's run their business from home they have previously (in their old place) had the experience of the health, hygiene and safety evaluations, as well as the insurance stuff. In their council district you can either apply for a one day licence, or a four year, and strangely they are the same price, so they will probably go for the long one. I think they would only be interested in holding weddings for family and friends though, as they want to keep their business small.

they will need to contact their local authority .. they will be able to tell them the process they need to go through far better than any bride on here

Thanks Glitterfairy! We've got all the paperwork so we know the procedure, its mostly just how strict they are that I am worrying about, as to some extent it will be a construction site when they visit, as they are continually working on the place (as they have been for three years and will be still after the wedding). Obviously it will be totally tidied up, its not like they always have rubble around, and anything potentially dangerous will be well cordoned off. We all reckon that the house will be livable, if not furnished, by our date next August, its just that the council might not be convinced seeing a work in progress.

Hopefully they will realise that there is work going on and allow it all. All the best
