    hey beautiful ladies!
having an issue, taking Amy for my migraines, but the main side effect is real bad weight gain - nearly 1/3 of my body weight again in the last 3 years!
but i still have a headache all the time, not as bad some days as it used to be but still there.
thinking of risking it with the migraines - maybe the Amy isnt working and i am just not having as bad migraines lately.
just the weight gain and inability to lose it is making me crazy!
    any suggestions??

Go and talk to your doctor and see if there is an alterative? I'm a great believer in asking for a second opinion after trying something for a long time and it's still not working! I suffer from time of the month migraines and they can last up to 3 days... I don't know how you cope having one all the time you poor thing :( xx

Speak to your doctor hun, I'm sure they can put you on something else perhaps, amy is prescribed for a variety of things, some you won't even believe..ie bedwetting in children!

It's also used as a tricylic antidepressant, so DO NOT STOP WITHOUT DISCUSSING WITH YOUR DOCTOR FIRST!

This was one of the most prescribed meds I gave out as a pharmacy dispenser when I worked for Boots & if any of the symptoms did not improve adequately enough we always told the person to pop back to the doctors first.

What kind of migraines is it, the aura type? Do you get vomiting with it?

Perhaps Imigran (sumatriptan)might be an option to discuss if you have not had it already? It is one of the most prescribed specific meds for migraines.

EDIT..forgot to say it is also only taken if it is needed.

Zolmiptriptan (Zomig) is an alternative too

:) zomig made me shaky and made it worse! imigran is useless, but co-codamol calms it slightly. if you can believe that! had a headache for 8 years now, pretty much non-stop. been on Amy for about 3 years and we haveto keep upping the dose cause my body gets used to it and needs more to get the same effect.

my head caves in, nauseau only at the extreme and lightheadedness is a bit more common with me. not light sensitive or noise sensitive, which is lucky cause i work with kids and that would not work! a couple times my word has gone green. literally it looked like someone had coloured everything in with a green highlighter, was a fun couple hours i tell you! also have issues with seeing the 'negative' of thinsg all the time. like i look at dan and when i look at the telly, i can still see his photo negative in front of me. and floating spots are my friends.

i am due to see my doc in 4 weeks, so i am going to see what he thinks, but i do know i have at least 3 months of weaning me off the amy anyway - i have been a happy little migraine suffer for three years now! ha, maybe its not working, but i am too chilled out to care really!

hmmmm, may be onto something there!
thanks for your helps ladies :)

Ok...have you tried Topiramate? I think it's called Topamax under brand name, it's a completely different medication & I think only recently began to get prescribed for migraines as it is more widely used for epilepsy sufferers instead.

Ick..I was gonna try that..but was put off of it..mind you..it could be because I just found out I am diabetic so could explain a little as to why I have some weight problems.

Yeah my mum is type 2, they can't tell which one I am so they need to do more flipping tests :(

But hopefully your docs will find something that will work for the migraines etc & fewer icky side effects :D

I used to take 'Amy' for headaches and stress, so i know exactly how you feel. I was also prescribed tramadol which helped me a great deal. I had mri scans and all sorts, everything came back clear, (except that i have a deformed inner right ear, not that, that had anything to do with the headaches).

The consultant, suggested it was stress, and advised me to get a new job. And worked a treat, withing a couple of months the headaches were getting better, i'd had one for nearly five years. (felt like i had a little man in my head trying to get out). I was slowly weaned off 'Amy', but was told to keep one packet for emergencies. I still get the odd headache occasionally but nothing quite as bad. I now try to avoid all stressful situations. If i can feel myself getting stressed, i'll have a tramadol, and very occasionally i've needed the odd 'Amy' just to take the edge off.

I know exactly how you feel, i put on quite a bit of weight whilst taking it, and i'm having difficulty losing it now. I was also on the pill at the same time, which didnt help matters.

If you need to chat you know where to find me. xx

I was prescribed Propanol, a beta blocker for my migraines. Done two courses of it (3 months when I was 18, 2 months at 22) and cut them out almost completely both times. Thinking of asking for more and they are becoming more frequent again.

im going throught the same thing at the moment, iv been having really bad headaches every day and its driving me up the wall. iv been prescribed Ami, but im a bit weary of taking it at the moment until iv had an mri scan in a couple of weeks, as i have multiple sclerosis and diabetes which is very bad at the moment and either of these can damage a nerve, or there could be another leigon on my brain which could cause the headaches. i really dont like the sound of putting on weight because of these tablets, and the first dose i had dindt seem to do anything! i have co-codamol and tramadol for other pain relief but doctors have given me strict instruction not to take these for headaches as they make it worse, stick to ibuprofen. xx

i took it for 6 weeks as i was waking up with headaches every morning i put up with if for a month as thought it was my migraine playing up, but went to docs and was given these they worked a treat! i had no probs with them but then i didn't take them for that long.
my migraines used to be awful i havn't had one for 5 years now (touched my wooden desk then) i had all the flashing the paralysis down my left side sickness and of coures the banging head mine were light sensitive and noise too, old computer monitors used to set them off so at uni i had to hand write everything includidng my dissertation what a mare that was! i tried blue glasses and speaking to the computer to type didnt work all the time, the blue glasses and overays helped me when i was reading books for a long time x

i've been taking it nonstop for about 3 years now, stopped taking cerazette a few months ago, in case that was causing weight gain and me and h2b decided we could live without it :) and with any consequences.started on 25mg, but moved up to 50mgs in about sept last year and up to 75mg this last month, though apparently this is still a low dose. take it every night just after tea time as it makes me drowsy, but this gives me the chance to wake up with a clear head.

changed jobs 4 times in the time i have been taking it, and completed two degrees at uni, and am doing a job i love (3 jobs actually) at the minute.
I have a really high stress threshold, not just saying it, i am organised and have a way of dealing with anything thrown at me (including being robbed at knife point in my own home last year - h2b has been on sleeping pills and antidepressants since) without it bothering me too much.

wear glasses for reading and pc as apparently one of my eyes is rugby ball shaped and needs a bit of nudging to keep it in line with the other :) only recently started bothering with the glasses actually as only just (in last 2 months) started noticing a difference when i wear them, though doc said they arent wonky enough to cause migraines to the effect i am having.love reading so if thats the cause i am buggered! but not noticed it worse on days i read more than on days i am bookless (which are rare but do happen!)

was on cerazette for last 2 years, but stopped that cause we figured it wasnt helping the weight gain and h2b and i decided we could deal with any consequences not taking it may bring. still use protection so i know i'm not pregnant and do tests every 3 monthsto be sure! tried the implant and had an endless period for 3 months straight so that was a bust!

:) helps to know that other people are in the same boat, consultant was about as useful as my dad telling me it was all in my head! ha ha ha love his sense of humour!
think me and doc are in for a bit of a chat :)
