Religious stuff lemlau. They dont let you have anything eligious in a civil ceremony.

So you cant have hymns or readings that mention god or the bible etc

    Wedding twins - woo!
It's going well...I got a bit sidetracked with job applications last week but this week am back in wedding perfection mode! Ticked a bunch of things off my list this morning and not much more to do! I'm psyched to get the work done so I can enjoy my hen night (23rd) and then look forward to the wedding itself!
How was your hen night? How are you doing with your last bits of planning? x

    Squeee :)

That's pathetic that they behave like that, I thought the whole idea of a registry office is that as far as they are concerned you are just making a legal contract so you should be allowed absolutely anything you want as long as you include the minimum legal requirement. What are you meant to do if you are Christian but don't approve of the mainstream churches? Or for that matter, Christian and gay? Are you allowed religious material in civil partnership ceremonies? If you are but not in civil weddings that's discrimination!

As far as I'm concerned it should be nothing whatsoever to do with a registry office what kind of ceremony you want, they should just be there to tick the box that says that at some point during the proceedings you said the legally binding vows.

I had no idea this was the case but I think it's really, really pants. It's so stupid that you can have a total pantomime of a wedding if you want like the ones on Wedding House, but can't make even a brief reference to religion! That wasn't meant to be judgemental about the Wedding House weddings, I think they're a great example of people doing what they want without the government sticking their noses in for a change.

No religious stuff!! Interfering busybodies! Grr, this thread has made me really angry lol. I can feel my hair standing up!

It doesn't bother us because we are not religious, and to have references to religion int he ceremony would make our hair stand up on end lol

Its down to the churches anyway, because a registry office is not deemed a "place of worship" then its not allowed.

Found this that might explain it better:

This religious/civil split dates from 1837, following the Marriage and Registration acts, which established the modern civil wedding to satisfy the demands of an increasingly secular society. According to the historian Laurence Stone in his book Road to Divorce, it was also “swift and cheap, and was intended to lure the poor back into matrimony”.

The 1837 law decreed a clear divide between civil and religious unions. This principle has persisted despite the tide of social, cultural and ethnic changes that has since swept over British society, not least the increasing numbers of mixed-faith marriages. More than a century and a half later, we are left with rules that prevent people celebrating in the way they choose. Weddings can still only take place in designated buildings, between the hours of 8am and 6pm, and the questions raised by mixed-faith marriages are ignored completely.

The only significant relaxation of these rules came with the 1994 Marriage Act, which permitted ceremonies to also take place in licensed “approved premises”, such as hotels, stately homes and even football stadia. The change proved hugely popular – the number of weddings held in approved premises rose from 15,210 in 1996 (about 9 per cent of the civil marriage total) to 99,760 (65 per cent) in 2007

Goff - Thanks for the background, very interesting. Still annoys me though - petty out of date laws that did nobody any good then and have no relevance to anything at all now.

Aldridge - I read where you had written 76 thou and I thought "OMG, somebody is spending £76,000 on a wedding???"

It is down to the individual registrar to what they will let you have. Mine told us that we could have Robbie Williams angels when I used that as an example to test them on as although it has the word angel in it the song is not religious. It just depends on how strict they want to be with it. I think we fell lucky and our place is fairly relaxed. They even let us book well before the year unlike some offices that make you book a year to the date and you have to all sit outside waiting for it to open to try and get your date and time.

If she doesn't let you have your reading then question other offices if they would let you have it and if they say yes it is fine then you can always go back to them and ask them why one place thinks it is OK yet they won't let you have it. It shouldn't be one rule for one and another rule for them.
