it is not wrong , they deserve a pay rise as much as you do.

if you got (for instance) 25k a year , your take home pay after tax etc is 19,173
they would get 50k (double 25k) they would take home 35k
That is no longer double . and they face increases to fuel, vat etc as much as anyone else

And they have worked their way up to get to where they are (usually spending thousands of pounds of their own money to get their qualifications), if you want that much why not train yourself and become a pilot.

They have a hard resposible job, that is very stressful, if you want to find someone undeserving look at celebs, singers etc. And footballers dont even start me on

It's a good point mcewan07, but when you have an income of £6k, it's hard to feel sympathetic of someone who earns £35k even after taxes. Besides, when their incomes go up, so will their amount of taxes. So it's not going to make that much of a difference.

And when the aforementioned low income people end up losing a lot of money because of the strikes, its even harder to be sympathetic.

We've booked our flight to Venice at the beginning of September. Its the only time we're relying on BAA and if they strike, the whole honeymoon is down the pan. I also hope that Eurostar don't strike when we finish our honeymoon. When we were in Belgium visiting h2b's dad, we missed the Eurostar strike by an hour.

mcewan07...im not saying they dont deserve a payrise im saying that they should realise how lucky they are to earn that sort of money.

i know that pilots spend a lot of money to train as i used to work for an airline and i know how hard it is too get a pilot job but i still think they get overpaid! in the past i was working a flight and went to sit in the flight deck as the flight was a night flight and it was so quite and the pilot and first officer just sit there talking all during the flight. they dont actaully do much to earn that much money. Yes it can be a stressful job but so can a lot of other jobs including mine but people dont earn as much for their stressful jobs.

i would never want to earn that much money to be honest...all i want is enough money to live on and to save a bit each month to buy a bigger house.
i agree with nisha...it is hard to be sympathetic to someone who earns 35k after tax! that is just over £2900 a month they take home. how can someone say that isnt enough money?

i do agree with you about footballers, sinegrs, actors. i think its awful that they can get paid so much esp footballers for kicking a ball around

I was not saying i am not sympathetic to the people who lose out due to holidays they were planning etc, i just never have grudged people earning money - unless over about 500k a year (ie. footballers , singer etc - who do nothing at all).Even when i was on benefits.
I know that airline pilots do little actual flying, but if a problem occurs it is up to them to solve it which is stressfull, the sim flights they must do regularly , and other procedures that need done so many times in a month. Also when learning or when in smaller planes, you are always at the controllers, as for a quick example - as i watch it fly past- the sea plane, will not have auto controls so its all up to the pilots.

I never judge them for the simple fact that you can not trust the figures you are given, esp in papers etc. I remember reading a report about air traffic controllers who earn up to 200k a year and so on, and so again their was outrage from the general public about their wages even although those earning that wage was the 0.5 % who mainly lived in london (talk about sky high prices as i am sure mainy in london can attest to) and were doing all the over time they could. In reality most ATC were earning about 60k on average, with some only down at 25K or so.

It is for that reason that i willl not judge people, wages within the same jobs, and even the same conpany vary greatly, and it is not for me to say how much each person deserves to get for that wage, or that they are not allowed an increase.

The trouble you have is that you live on what ever wage you have.

ie. if you only have £10k a year you will rent/morgage a house with that takes out only £300 a month or so, along with the rest of your bills, if you are fortunate to get 50k a year you will buy a bigger house and so your morgage a month might be £1500.

Now yes i understand where the argument will come from, they might not need that big a house or whatever, but trouble is now they have it , if their wages do not rise with inflation (VAT increase, Fuel increase etc) then they will fall behind on payments, as much as the 10k a year person would if they never got the increase, and be in the same problems, its not fair on the 10k a year person to lose their house - just as its not fair on the 50k a year person to lose theirs.

I guess its mainly for the point off the 200k a year figures that i had read one year - when i new for a fact that my cousin (who was atc) was only on about 25k (i think at the time) a year was ATC.And if he said anything the outcry was why did he deserve it - just because he said he was an ATC. He got only a little over 10% of what some where earning as he wasn't qualified in both tower and radar, and because he didn't work in one of the big units, but they pay increase still affected him.Since then i have not judged people for wanting a pay increase, or listened to much to what people get - as the papers only ever seem to print the Highest bands (ie. london) salaries and not what the wee man gets.

I didn't mean to offend any or anger anyone, so if i did im sorry .Hopefully i have explained a little on how i feel the way i do, and as much as i can see what you say, that their are people milking money alot more - ie. the footabllers ( 1mill + for kicking a ball about a field :O )

just to throw a spanner in the works, my h2b hasn't had a pay rise for over 2 years now and his bonus which he should get every quarter were also stopped, my wages haven't gone up in 2 years either, yet our rent, bills, living expenses have. Regardless as to how much you earn you do live to your means, my rent has gone up over £25.00 a month, which may not seem a great deal, but when wages haven't then yes £300 a year is a lot.

I don't begrudge anyone what they earn, my sister used to be on over 100k a year, but she worked bl00dy hard for that pay, so deserved it, but what gets my back up is that everyones living costs have gone up yet you don't see everyone filling on to the street striking.

If my wedding is ruined because pilots want more money when i haven't had a pay rise, then sorry no sympathy will be given...x

i do agree mcewan07 when you say about they buy bigger houses so the mortgage is bigger and they dont need a house that big and i def agree with footballers. 100k a week or whatever it is for kicking a ball around!

but if they cant pay their mortgage buy a smaller house so they can afford it! i agree with becca about honeymoons being ruined because of non pay rises and strikes. they are so lucky to have a job at the moment and should just get on with their job xx

B0llocks! I told H2B not to book with BA because they are always on or threatening strikes so he booked with Virgin. D'Oh! Not going until November though so should be fine as it's not a traditional busy period.

sell a house in this climate - i know if i was to do that today i would be out of pocket , as i have more mortgage left than the house is now worth due to prices falling - so that is not possible for everyone, i cannot speak for virgin as i dont know personally what their package is, but i do know alot of airline staff have also not had a pay increase in 2 years - yet their bosses have been getting bonuses of 500k + , that is why you are seeing workers planning strike action.

Would you be happy if your boss got 200k wage + 500k bonus last year while you got no pay rise, would you then stand for it this year if they then said to you they could only afford to put your pay up by 2%, when over the past 3 years the increase in living has went up by around 5% every year.I dont think you would be happy and neither are they.

I do hope no one is affected by this, and hopefully managers will back down - the trouble is, they think they will win as when it comes out in the press the public side with the bosses and say they shouldn't get a pay rise and so the bosses usually win. Lets hope it doesn't get to that.
