H2B wants to have my day, as in a whole day. He wants to get married at about 11.30. We're having a sit down meal he wants to sit down at 1pm, the evening reception will start about 7pm. My question is what does everyone do inbetween the meal and the evening do? We have a lot of out-of-towners coming for the wedding. There is a bar at the hotel we're using. But I want to have it all start later on in the day (not to mention my hair and make up is supposed to last all day and night). What do you all think?

personally, for me, thats a bit too early!!! as you would need to be up extra early to get your hair and make up etc and its meant to last like you said

explain to ur h2b as well that its a long time from sit down meal at 1pm til reception at night ..and even then the buffet won't be til later!

but if he's adament..you could always arrange some entertainment for during the gap between wedding breakfast and reception?

Compromise? Wedding at 1, canapes during the photos and sit down at 3? You could have your buffet at 7.30/8? But yes you'd still need something for the gap in terms of entertainment. This was a driving factor for us having a UK evening reception starting at 6 - the filling in costs run away with the budget :(

have you tried local colleges like performance art courses etc? might be singers, musicians or dancers etc willing to work for free or a low fee to get some experience.

Party games like giant jenga with small prizes?

Thats a good idea :D I really need to get it through to him that 11.30 is too early. He knows I'm not a morning person at the best of times and I need an hour or 2 to start to function properly, I can't see my wedding day being any different lol. My hair is bad enough to control on a good day and I can't see it lasting ALL day. I don't wanna look a mess on the evening do pictures obviously lol. He keeps going on that he wants me to have a full day but I don't think its sinking in that the morning spent getting ready still counts for me

We are getting married at 11 then sitting down to eat at about 3.30. If you are having photos done you won't have enough time between getting married (which can take up to an hour depending on the type of service) then travelling to another venue (if you are) then having enough time to have photos taken (you will want plenty of time for this if you are paying for a photographer, otherwise you might not get all the shots you want.

We are then having an hour break between reception and evening do which we have called nap time. H2B was best man for his cousin and they had that slot and we all went for a nap then had a much better time at the evening do for it! And for those guests who arent staying they can stay in the bar area and just relax and have a bit of down time there.

I'd be happy with a 3.30 sit down but H2B thinks people are going to get too hungry. The ceremony and reception is in the same place but its near a river so we will want to disappear for photos there and in the grounds too.

I wouldn't leave ppl from 11-3.30 without eating, I'd be chewing my arm off! The girls on 4 weddings are always moaning when they're hungry and u don't want that to spoil your day. Could you offer them tea and a small cake or cheap canapes whilst you're whisked off for photos? Background music then do something when you get back?

I would too as I hardly ever eat breakfast. I could start the evening reception earlier but that would cost us more having the band set up earlier than 6pm and I really liked the idea of setting off sky lanterns once it started getting dark (that was more my winter wedding idea and not sure it would work in june)

When i worked it out with my venue the timings do work for getting married at that time. will have a look when i am home and tell you our times to see if that helps you xx

I deliberatly chose getting married at two for a number of reasons.
    1. I don't have to rush in the morning (my friend got married at 10am and we had to be up at 5am to get everyone done)
    2. It gives guests time to eat something before they arrive.
    3. The day doesn't drag on as it can be very tyring.

I know our evening doesn't start until later but it means there are no long gaps in the day where people hang about.

    Our day goes as follows:
    2pm civil wedding
2.30pm guests walk from civil room over to church (5mins walk but they will amble and chat) bride and groom go for ride in car.
    3pm blessing
3.45 finish service and go for reception drinks and canapess whilst photos being taken.(Giving two hours to take all shots etc)
5.45 sit down for three course meal (2 hours)
7.45 served tea coffee and chocs while room turned around for evening.
    8.30 Evening entertainment starts
    9.30 buffet served.
12pm everyone goes home or goes down to public bar while we go and have fun ;)

That is what I was thinking as my mobility isn't that great over a period of time and my pain levels increase if I do too much. I wanted to give myself enough time to have the photos done without having to hang about all day. I don't think the guests will be bored for two hours while we have the photos taken as they will be in a lot of them anyway then going for nibbles and drinks. We will be playing music but I think its nice to be social during that time and people do entertain themselves in times like this.

Yeah they do - when we are having photographs before sit down meal there are going to be a 9 hole pitch n putt green, croquet, jiant board games and hula hoops so i think they will be happy playing with alcohol coursing through their veins lol x

Could u not explain to H2B that having ur hair and makeup down and spending fun time with ur bridesmaid is all part of the day anyway so u wont be missing out on any of the "day" cos the day starts with ur preperations from the moment u wake up. We are getting married at 2 and I cant wait to wake up with my bridesmaid and start getting ready....its still all ur day xx

A friend got married last summer and had similar timings to make the celebrations last all day.

The ceremony was at 11.30am, followed by a drink in a local pub. Lunch was 1pm which what with all the banter and speeches etc.. lasted a good two hours. The evening do started at 7pm. I and the other guests were grateful for the break as we could head back to our hotel and relax for a few hours.

Can't wait until the day I become Mrs. Johnson :)

ahhh! thats what H2B has been saying, and a few people there will have young children (our youngest will be 5 by then). I think we are coming to a compromise (sp?) where we can start the ceremony a little later and people still have time to do whatever they want between the meal and the evening do

The gap would realistically be about 2 1/2 - 3 hours. I've been to weddings that this amount of time had been set aside for photoshoots etc. It didn't seem that bad as the time was spent mingling/chatting and having pics taken when the bride and groom got around to us...

So, I would say no *need* to have anything planned but you could put on some form on entertainment on (no idea what though, sorry). The part I would worry about most would be the fact there was a bar! Potentially having guests drinking from 1 (something I would perhaps do, I admit) would not be the best idea!!

Surely it depends on ceremony length. If you have a civil ceremony with say only one reading, it would probably only take 30 minutes tops. Then photographs, well depends what you want. I plan to allow 1.5 hours. More than that and I'd feel it would get a bit tedious for anyone not involved for most of it, so I'm looking at sitting down to eat about 2 hours after the ceremony starts, maybe 2.5 hours at the outside. That and I'm having my ceremony and reception in the same location, so there is no travel time between the two to take into account.

Timings I'm not sure on are how long the meal will take, so I know what time to put on the evening reception. I know it will depend on whether we have speeches (not sure on that yet), but hopefully the venue can help me get a rough idea on that.
