So I really want a 3 tier wedding cake.... Chocolate being the largest tier, lemon the second and Fruit (my mum has insisted) being the smallest at the top!!!

Just spoke to a cake lady and she said that the fruit would have to be the bottom tier I'm assuming because of it's weight.

Is this correct?? I just want a small Fruit because I'm thinking it will be the least popular?? xx

Most cake makers do say this BUT it's not impossiable!
Just get a few dowell's for support and a cake board inbetween layers for extra support and you should be fine.

Or get a cake stand that's tiered like this
    5 tier cs.jpg
    5 tier cs.jpg

so you get 3 separate cakes!

We did exactly the same. I have to say though, that we ignored all the warnings and as much as our cake maker tried (she put a lot of dowels in, as we found out when we cut it up LOL!), our cake did still sink on one side due to the weight of the top tier.
I think your best bet would be to have separate cake stands, like the one in the pic that Hails posted.

You could always put a long rod thingy threw both bottom tiers together instead of two seperate ones? That might hold a bit better? x

If you support it well enough you should be fine, i've seen fruit cakes stacked on to the top as long as theres enough dowels to distribute the weight and a thin cake board there shouldn't be much trouble.

You could always have 3 tiers (with no fruit) and get an extra wee fruit cake made so everyone is happy :) xx

A lot of the cake people we've seen wont do fruit on top either...

Maybe you could have a fruit cutting bar, so there's some fruit cake there.

(or just tell your mother that they can't do fruit on top, and have a different flavour sponge instead! )

    Xx

As long as the fruit is supported properly it can be done. My cake maker said she would have no problem if fruit was on the top.

I have heard of cakes which had extra support for a top fruit layer done by professional cakemakers and ended up collapsing during the reception! I would say you've got 3 options if you don't want to risk that:

    1. Ignore your mum
    2. You a cake stand which holds the tiers separately
    3. Have the fruit cake as a cutting bar instead of one of the tiers

As others have already suggested you do have a number of options, if you are using some sort of cake stand as Hails has suggested or something similar to that then it doesnt matter which one is fruit and which one is sponge as none need support!
Fruit is typically on the bottom as it is the heaviest and will support the other tiers but if you don't think it will be as popular - as is the case these days, then a fruit cutting bar is definitely your next best option!

I absolutely love fruit cake and so does my mom & dad but pretty much everyone else we know inc my OH don't like it so we'll end up with a fruit cutting bar if we do have any fruit cake at all!! xx

Cake makers say that Hun because it's easier for them! Don't listen to her, if you want a large sponge at the bottom you can have it. Someone more experienced can sure do this for you x

We're having fruit as our top tier with the 3 tiers underneath being various flavours of sponge.

Our cake lady just said it's fine and they use dowling rods of something to support the cakes under the weight of the ones on top xx

As long as you have the right cake stand anything is possible. If you want them all tiered on top of each other I'd imagine fruit would be a bit heavy for the top but if you have them on a more modern stand where they aren't actually resting on each fruit is fine. That's what my sister did - small fruit at the top as no one really eats it! x
