I have just had an email through with an invoice demanding a further £171 from our venue!

Apparently a further 16 peoples worth of drink got drunk at the wedding breakfast and therefore we have to pay?!

Bearing in mind we paid in full before the wedding for the amount of guests who were there, and that didn't change so no adults instead of children etc. I didn't even touch the alcohol personally yet still paid for the alcoholic package. Hubby hardly touched his wine and I saw no one getting silly drunk!

I was told that it was half a bottle of wine per person I think, but the staff kept coming round topping peoples drinks up willy nilly and we were not aware that after the event we would be stung regarding the alcohol!

I emailed and complained, I am furious and she has said to leave the matter with her and she will get to the bottom of it today.

    I really am seething!!

    xx

The way I see it is you paid for a package it was their responsibility to uphold the amount of alcohol set by the package. If they've taken it upon themselves to go over the limit then that is their own fault. Unless yourself or your husband approached them and specifically asked for more alcohol you shouldn't be held responisble.

You've agreed on a package size and alcohol limit before the wedding, you've paid for it so therefore you've upheld your end of the bargain. Clearly a fault with their waiters if they have come round offering even more alcohol, so sounds to me like its an issue they should be raising with their staff rather than their guests.

Thats exactly the wording i was after modmummy. I tried getting my point across by saying that we paid for X amount and X amount were there.

I said to her, fair enough if someone had told me on the day so i could have discussed it with my grandma as she paid, but not to carry on pouring and then coming back to me!

Oh thats not good but if you had paid for a drinks package then surely the venue should no when to stop serving the free drink and let guests no that the drinks are now payable, i would look back into all communication with them just to make sure there is nothing in there that says that if you go over you will be charged, and i would blatantly refuse to pay anything more to them i mean your wedding would of been expensive anyway to them and what is £171 to a well established company the drink probs would of been cheaper for them to get in anyway then they charge you over the odds per glass for it. A friend of mine was a manageress at a pub and she told me they got there wine for like a few quid a bottle but would charge guests like 15quid for it... Hope you get it sorted and refuse to give them any money stating that they were aware of how many guests were there and what was included in your package so therefore it is there responsibility to only serve what was included. xx

thanks ladies. its exactly what im going to do. it states on the invoice it has to be paid within 30 days of the invoice. i'm really fuming about it.

to be honest it said invoice/refund and i was expecting a refund due to the lack of people drinking!

we agreed a package and like you ladies say, its their fault they went over that!

to me its no different to us putting a tab on the bar and saying 'stop at £500' or whatever!

Have you checked your original contract with them about the drinks package?

If it doesn't mention anything about charging you extra then they can't do it simple as.
If it is limited to half a bottle per person then it is up to them with uphold that. It is not ur responsibility to ensure that no1 drinks a little bit more than that.

They should not have had more wine than what you had paid for upfront, and if they did that this their error!

I hope you can sort it out hun!

I hope you get this sorted. That's terrible that they would try to charge you. You paid for a set amount, it's completely their fault if they made a mistake and served too much. You should definitely not have to pay for that. Let us know how you get on xxx

they should have approached you when the wine for the drinks package was running out to let you know so you could deiced to either add more yourself or to open a pay bar. if they didn't mention the extra wine to you on the day and its not stated anywhere in the original contract or invoice that this would be done then you don't pay as no one as asked for the extra to be added and they did it off there own backs. stick to your guns its a very bad way to do busines x

No reply from them regarding if they are dropping the money or not, but my Grandma and Mum are fuming also about this too.

Apparently the staff kept taking away full glasses of wine when people moved from their seats!?!

That's really out of order. A package is a package and unless they specifically state that the package comes with a drinks limit then they should've stated that clearly at the beginning and put a stop once your guests hit the limit then either check with you that you're happy to pay more to keep the drinks flowing or to start charging your guests.

    Don't pay them anything!

we have agreed a fixed number of bottles and in our contract it is clearly stated that if they run out before the end of the wedding breakfast then they will come and ask us if we wish to open any more. Plus any open bottles not finished will be put at the bar for people to help themselves and any unopened bottles will be refunded.
They should never have gone over what you had signed and payed for without first getting your permission!!!
I wouldnt pay them anything and if they argue with you then threaten to take them to trading standards for breach of contract!!

Also how rediculous to take away full glasses of wine just coz the person has walked away from the table!!! seems like they were trying to use up lots of wine for the sake of it!!!

They only have so many details about you so unless they can put it on your credit report, cut their invoice up and send it back lol.
Now seriously, they cannot charge you if they didn't have your permission to serve more than you were originally quota'd.

Had an email today with her sincere apologies for any upset this has caused me and my husband and said she has issues a credit note to our account to balance it, as she spoke to the manager who was in charge of our reception confirmed that our numbers were correct!

The sad thing is, is that, like my mum and grandma said, the majority of people who have events there, wouldn't question it and would just pay! So if we had sent them the money they would have just taken it!

    So be careful people!!

One other point is, if like you, you were expecting a refund because you thought the drinks bill was lower than what you had paid....to get a bill like that, THEN be told they have scrapped it as a gesture of goodwill, well you are happy to be told that so you wont question whether you should have been due a refund or not, because you dont want to rock the boat or appear greedy. so you might have been due a refund, but they get to keep it, after 'helping' you with this misunderstanding.

Or maybe I am a bit too suspicious?

Quite possibly.. But we did pay the fee for the packages, and our numbers were there and drunk some sort of drinks.

I guess the point of a package is so that both parties know where the other stands and you purchase them for financial safety so its easy to keep track. 1 person was £11.95 and they are allowed x,y and z. No quarms etc.

I just think its terrible that some people might not even question it! If I wasn't so money-minded I might have fallen for it..

So on your wedding day, you were supposed to monitor how much the waiting staff were bringing out? I don't flipping well think so cheeky blighters. It is clearly their error so they should write it off. It's not like any of your guests are going to question the fact that they've had more than half a bottle. My drinks package is for a set amount of bottles that will be on the tables at the start of the breakfast if there are anymore consumed that will be via the cash bar. We are hoping to put a couple of hundred behind the bar in the evening but I would be fuming if they tried to charge us any more for wedding breakfast drinks after the event. You go girl!

I think it must have been some mix up though.. cause just 16 extra portions of drinks got put on the invoice she sent, but then again we paid it in full before so no fiddling needed doing on our invoice.. oh I don't know. No point worrying now its sorted :)

as you say, some people wouldn't question it and just pay up. It's made me think twice about our drinks package. As not everyone likes wine we had decided on doing drinks vouchers. each person will get 2 vouchers and with that the adults can get a pint/large glass of wine or a single shot with mixer. Kids vouchers can only get non alcoholic drinks. I think when I have my meeting that I want to see the full invoice of drinks lol that way i know I wont be paying for over the number of vouchers I've given out ;) x

the vouchers are like the old cinema type stubs. They're all numbered so will be quite hard for people to duplicate. we've mentioned that they're having vouchers to some people but they've no idea what they're like size/colour wise. Fingers crossed
