I was supposed to be having my first dress fitting tomorrow afternoon - but the shop rang me this morning to postpone. They told me that the seamstress is off sick and has put a sick note in for the next two weeks. At first they wanted to book me in for July - and made the excuse that it'll give me more time to lose more weight if I want. They then said that I'd have one dress fitting about 4 weeks before the wedding then a quick try on just before the wedding - I'm fuming!!!

When I said I wasn't willing to do that, they offered an appt for the end of June - and when I said I wouldn't do that they've give me one for the 17th June, but told me that the seamstress might not be back then!!! I can't believe they only have one seamstress in a city centre shop given that it's the peak season for weddings.

Can anyone tell me how many dress fittings you're supposed to have? And how long before the wedding should you have your first one? When I bought the dress I was told (and got it in writing) that the alterations are included in the price. Now I'm wondering if they scrimp on the service because they offer free alterations. I did also wonder if it's just a cover for them - as it's a busy time for them I wonder if the seamstress is behind with the orders and not off sick at all. When I ordered my dress last year I was told 16 to 20 weeks for delivery - and had to wait 26 weeks!!! So now you can see why I'm not that confident about them wanting to leave the dress fitting til 4 weeks before the wedding.

I always thought you had 2 fittings - one to get your measurements taken for the dress to be altered and then another to check that it fits. I suppose then if any further alterations need making you would need another fitting xx

    Terri...

I am getting married in 3 weeks...
I have only in the last week had a fitting .. it needs to be taking in just 2 inches...
i have appointment for Mon 6th June to try it on for the final time.... Thats 12 days before the wedding!!

Thats it.. i havent had anymore fittings than that...
I think most places just do the two fittings..
the first one is like 3-4 weeks before the wedding!!

The alterations are included in the price - but I'm getting worried because if the seamstress is off sick and this turns out to be for a long time then I would have to go somewhere else, as the dress is still a little too big and a lot too long!! H2b wants to email the shop and explain this to them - and also to tell them if this happens then we'll expect them to pay for the alterations - or we'll take it through the small claims court.

I bought mine on Saturday it comes in at september and i wont be having a fitting till next year.

I would be the same hun. If you just happen to wonder into the shop and say can you just try it on and see if the seamstress is there then you will know

I'd ring back to confirm that she is back as soon as the 2 weeks are up, if she's off for longer then I'd request the shop get someone else to do the fitting. My mum's making mine so she's not starting it until 3 months before. Will have a fitting at 2 months before and one at 1 month before. She did say she'll get me to try it on again a fortnight before to make sure everything is still ok x

i had my final fitting last night and although i was slightly worried about the time scale i kinda think that they know what they are doing and i trust them as they wouldnt leave it to late and have to face a bridezilla lol, i know your cercumstances are different as she is off ill but i think that the shop would hopefully get a temp in if they thought it was going to be long term as they would not be wanting a load of angry brides giving bad reviews about thier shop, i would say talk to them and explain all your concerns after all, you are the bride and you are the one paying so you should be the one that is happy with the arrangements, x

i have my final fitting 2 weeks before and only just had my first at 5 weeks before. so if it doesnt fit in 3 weeks i'll not get my dress until the week of the wedding. which in a way is a good thing as i'll be at my mums every day trying it on. then ill be picking holes in it and by the day i wont like it lol

im sure the lady will be back by then. maybe you should have a search of other seamstresses around and prices, just incase so you can go somewhere else. if there not willing to get you in on time then they'll have to give you the money from what youve paid to pay someone else to do it,.

It's Bridal House on the Headrow in Leeds MrsHandforth. I've only ever heard good reviews of them and know a few people who have bought dresses there. Unfortunately one of them is my cousin but that was twenty odd years ago so the service may have changed since then lol. I've read reviews as well and no one has mentioned anything like this before so I'm really hoping this is just temporary and the seamstress will be back soon - fingers crossed..

I decided to call in the bridal shop today and talk to them about how worried I was about the situation. The manageress went through everything with me - and explained that if the seamstress is still off sick when I go for my fitting on the 17th June then she has the experience to do the initial work (ie pinning etc) and she does have other staff that can do some needle work. And if more needs doing, then she has a few seamstresses who she uses (usually when they're really busy) that work at home - so if the worst happens I would be able to go to one of them to have the dress finished.

I will be booked in for a final fitting a few weeks after that - and if anything else (the small things) still needs altering they'll get that done for me and the dress will be ready before we go to Gretna. I'm feeling a bit calmer tonight after going to talk to them :-)
