Information For Sue Walder Humanist Celebrant
I work with couples to create meaningful and memorable weddings and vow renewals. Each humanist ceremony is totally bespoke and written to reflect your shared values and personalities.
Your wedding day is one of the most significant days of your life. But with all the endless planning for flowers, wedding favours, bridesmaid's dresses etc, the wedding ceremony itself is in danger of being overlooked.
As a humanist wedding celebrant I will work hard to create a ceremony that says all you want it to say as a couple and in a tone that’s right for you both.
Regardless of whether you already have a strong vision of what you want in your wedding ceremony or are still mulling things over, I can help.
I usually require to have at least one face-to-face meeting where I gather information for the wedding script. I'm then available throughout the process to offer guidance and support.
Some couples like to involve close friends and family members in the ceremony – for instance, delivering a reading, playing music etc. And I can help source suitable poems and songs if required.
Other couples like to include a symbolic or cultural act, such as hand-fasting, sand blending, or ring warming. For one couple we included a version of a Hindu phera, or fire ceremony! And another ceremony ended on all of us singing Frank Sinatra's 'Come fly With Me'! Whatever is right for you is right for your wedding ceremony.
The exchange of vows and rings is perhaps the most important part of the wedding ceremony. There are lots of different ways of doing this - from the traditional to the truly personal. I can guide you both through the process.
It’s a privilege to help couples declare their love and commitment to each other in front of the people that matter most to them in all the world.
A humanist wedding ceremony can follow this basic structure:
Your arrival (individually or together)
Introductions and welcomes
Words about marriage
Reading or poem
Your story – how you met, shared values etc
Readings, poem or songs
Your promises / vows
Meaningful symbolic act (e.g. hand-fasting)
Exchange of rings
Pronouncement as married
Words of well-wishing
Your exit - to music of your choice.
