The Real Wedding of Becca & Scott

Becca & Scott's Wedding Story

How did you meet?
It all began in 2010 when I was bridesmaid for my best friend, and it just so happened that she was Scott’s cousin. We were paired together for the first dance and found out we had more in common than we thought (we’d been at the same school for years but never met!).

When I discovered how much Scott hates dancing in front of people, the fact that he’d made the effort for me made him my hero, and the rest, as they say, is history… We got married last December in a winter wonderland, and now we’re expecting our first baby!

Who proposed to who, and how did they do it?
Scott proposed to me. He took me to Dunnottar Castle in Stonehaven. I’d wanted to go there with him for a long time but when it came to that day it was pretty windy and miserable so I wasn’t keen to get out the car… I’m glad I did now!
We enjoyed the views and he took out the ring. I don’t really remember much of what came next, I think I was just laughing and saying “yes, yes!”

How did you know that Becca/Scott was ‘The One’?
Scott – Because she puts up with me, even when I’m not fun!
Becca – The first time I remember realising I’d spend the rest of my life with Scott was when we were out to dinner and were discussing the layout of a house, we were saying how we would change it if we lived there. All of a sudden I realised I’d be more than happy to grow old with the man sitting opposite me. On a more daily basis, I keep being reminded how lucky I am through all the small things he does and how he makes me laugh.

What made you choose your Narnia theme, flowers and colour scheme?
Both Scott and I love winter. We spent most of our first weeks together in the snow – skiing, walking and witnessing a storm where lightening lit up the entire sky through the falling snow. We also love Christmas so it seemed natural for us to get married around then.

The Narnia part came from my childhood. Growing up, my dad would read The Chronicles of Narnia to me before bed, and I remember listening to the passage about Lucy walking through the wardrobe door and into a land covered in snow and full of magic. This was how I wanted to feel on our wedding day and the hotel didn’t disappoint. No task was too big or too small when it came to my vision for how to decorate.

The night before, maintenance staff were building a ramp to allow safe use of a giant wardrobe door around the bar. There was a Narnia themed photo booth and floral ivy draped around every candlestick in the wedding breakfast. The staff even hung extra lights downstairs for our evening reception.

The hotel was beautiful. Christmas trees around every corner, and lights and decorations for all the kids to enjoy too. It was a dream come true!

My bouquet was actually made by my mother. She managed to incorporate a set of paper flowers that I was given by a pupil I taught a few years ago. They were made from pages out of ‘The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe’ and it seemed fitting to incorporate this and have my class there with me, even if it was only in spirit.
Colour scheme? Both Scott and I like the colours purple and green, it was as simple as that.
Where did you get your dress and how did you choose it?

I bought my dress from Apple Blossom Time in Huntingtower, Perth. The service I received was truly excellent and their studio was beautiful. The moment I put my dress on, I felt like a princess. I actually ended up choosing the first dress I put on (although I tried many others) because it sparkled in the lights and looked like it belonged on a woodland princess. I overheard a friend on the day saying that I ‘looked like a Narnian princess…like I’d just walked through the wardrobe door’ – while my other friend said ‘I think that was the idea!’

What was your favourite part of the day?
Scott – When I saw Becca walking down the aisle (aww!)
Becca – It had to be when I looked down the aisle to Scott and saw all our loved ones there to celebrate with us. The ceremony room was magical and I had Dad there to walk with me – he made me smile (even when I got a little nervous.)

How did you feel on the morning of the wedding?

This is something we have actually spoken about since, and neither of us felt any pressure, stress or panic beforehand. I just remember feeling so relaxed in the morning and Scott said he just knew everything was taken care of.

I arrived with the girls the day before for some R & R and we were treated like royalty, right from the start. We enjoyed time in the Victorian Spa, had some treatments, and even had our very own family cinema night in the on-site cinema watching one of my childhood favourites ‘Father of the Bride.’

As I say, nothing was too much for the staff, breakfast was delivered to the room I was sharing with the girls, while the menfolk enjoyed a leisurely walk around the grounds. The photographer and videographer just seemed to blend into the background in the morning, they used the space around the hotel really well – especially as it was a drizzly, Scottish morning.

Would you ever have trusted Scott to organise the whole thing – ‘Don’t tell the Bride’ style?
In a word – NO! Scott says he could manage it no problem and to be honest, I’m sure he would do a pretty good job. But I’m a bit of a control freak about certain things, and I couldn’t give up all control over the big day.

What was the most romantic thing about the day?
Scott – Seeing you and knowing that I was getting married to you made me feel so lucky!
Becca – Hard to say… I liked hearing the words “I now pronounce you husband and wife!” but I also remember the 10 minutes that Scott and I managed to steal away together, just the two of us. We went down a long corridor with a Christmas tree at the end and then sat down together and managed to have a little time where it was just us…BLISS! This was another thing we loved about being at the Hydro … there was always space for it to just be ‘us.’

Did anything unexpected happen on the day?
Actually yes. Little did I know, but there was a bit of a panic over the register. The minister realised that his details were incorrect, and he worried this would make the paperwork invalid and we couldn’t get married. Now, at the time, my Dad was actually really ill – he’d been in hospital two days before (again, not to my knowledge), but he also used to be a minister many years ago. He went to speak to our minister and explained that something similar had happened to him before and he managed to sort it. Phew! It all worked out well in the end.
Also, our lovely Border Collie even came to see us, which was a complete surprise! He was staying with my sister’s in-laws but they wanted to surprise us, and it was one of the best moments of the day (knowing our whole family was there).

What was the most memorable part of the day?
Just everything! There were times I looked around and just couldn’t believe I was getting married in a beautiful winter wonderland. It was exactly as I’d imagined and dreamt about since I was a little girl! When Scott and I got engaged my Mum said when she had taken me to the Hydro as a child apparently I’d said “Mummy, this is where I’m going to get married!” So maybe I knew all along, but what made it special for me was the first time I took Scott out to see the hotel, he felt exactly the same way about it. We both just felt so relaxed in the hotel and knew it would be the best place to share our big day with our loved ones.

There was so much for everyone at the hotel. When you want to be treated like royalty, the staff make sure that you are. When you want time to relax and unwind, there’s plenty of opportunity for that too. We also have a big family – on both sides – with lots of children, so it was lovely to know that they were never short for things to do. They all loved the Christmas decorations, visiting Santa and using the Hub. It just made the whole wedding experience fun for everyone. It wasn’t just our ‘Big Day’ but it was like a mini holiday for everyone. So many members of our family said we couldn’t have picked a better spot, they all left feeling relaxed and ready for Christmas.
